Igli era La Meca de los Almohades. En la cueva de Igli Muhammad Ibn Tûmart proclamó el principio del movimiento almohade en África del norte. A pesar de la importancia de Igli, no se conocía su localización exacta o de la cueva de Ibn Tûmart. Aquí se detalla el descubrimiento de la pequeña aldea de Igli 30 kilómetros al este de Tarûdant. La localización de esta aldea moderna parece corresponder con el Igli almohade. Las fuentes primarias, el testimonio oral (...) y los restos físicos se aducen como evidencia de que el Igli moderno era el lugar de nacimiento de Ibn Tûmart. (shrink)

This paper establishes the essential dates of the “Puerta del Perdón” as the main door of the congregational mosque of Išbīliya, European capital of the Almohad empire. Nowadays it is the main entrance to the “Patio de los Naranjos” of the Seville cathedral. This analysis is based on the observations gathered during the restoration works, ended in 2014. This paper contains archaeological research data, documents from several archives, together with translations of the Almohad chronicles. We collect literary and graphic information (...) about all the Islamic elements identified, establishing hypotheses about the original monument and fixing its chronology in five essential stages: construction of the prayer room and “Patio” general outline, structural reforms in the courtyard related with the begin of Giralda minaret, completion of the minaret and decorative reform of the building, including the bronze doors of the “Puerta”, construction of a Moorish balcony over the Gate and finally construction of a bell gable and its decorative completion. Los almohades utilizaron sus monedas para difundir sus mensajes religiosos e ideológicos, no constituyendo una excepción en este aspecto. La nueva forma cuadrada, la metrología y las leyendas de la numismática almohade reflejan la situación histórica y sus posicionamientos sociales y políticos. La forma cuadrada equipara la moneda con su correspondiente dineral y fue un elemento de identificación política. Las leyendas religiosas proclaman la teología almohade de la unicidad de Dios y el lema de la dinastía. La arqueología ha revelado recientemente la existencia de una importante revitalización urbana en Córdoba durante el Califato Almohade, apenas tratada hasta ahora por la historiografía, centrada principalmente en su pasado omeya. Por un lado, se ha observado una importante inversión del poder almohade en elementos defensivos y palatinos, acaso por tratarse en estas fechas de un centro fundamental en la conceptualización histórica de al-Andalus y en la lucha contra los reinos cristianos; por otro, se ha documentado un importante crecimiento orgánico (...) y privado extramuros. Todo ello coincidió con su elección como capital andalusí en 557/1162 por ‘Abd al-Mu’min, lo que suponía un hito fundamental para la legitimación de su nuevo califato. Tras su muerte pocos meses después, Abū Ya‘qūb Yūsuf hizo regresar la corte a Sevilla, creando un importante cambio de rumbo en la política almohade que no afectó al resurgir urbano de la antigua sede omeya. En realidad, Córdoba seguiría muy presente en la mentalidad colectiva andalusí durante el gobierno almohade, manteniéndose como referente principal del esplendor pasado y como núcleo esencial de la tradición mālikī. Este artículo examina el problema de la fecha y circunstancias en que desapareció el cristianismo de origen local en el Occidente islámico, desde Ifrīqiya hasta Garb al-Andalus. Concluye que resulta imposible negar el papel de los almohades y él momento en que se estableció su poder, porque coinciden en ello testimonios de procedencia muy variada. Pero hace constar, por una parte, que no disponemos, hasta el momento, de documentos de procedencia islámica occidental para reivindicar la supresión de la ḏimma, (...) en lo que toca a los cristianos como a los judíos y, por otra parte, que se puede considerar a los mozárabes, y otros cristianos del Occidente islámico, como víctimas tanto de la presión procedente del Norte como de la reacción de la población musulmana mayoritaria. En el Museo Arqueológico y Etnológico de Córdoba se conserva un copioso tesorillo de monedas almohades de plata compuesto por varios millares de piezas, hallado en Priego de Córdoba en 1959. Algunas de ellas permiten la lectura de dos nuevas cecas: las de Qart.ay^anna y Ba-guh, que pueden identificarse con las localidades españolas actuales de Cartagena y Priego. La multiplicidad de cecas almohades recibe aquí una explicación hipotética: se trataría de acuñaciones conmemorativas de acontecimientos políticos o religiosos.

En el presente artículo se analizan las características de la epigrafía oficial almohade de Marruecos, en tanto que elemento de gran importancia dentro del sistema propagandístico diseñado por la dinastía mu’miní. El estudio se centra en los rasgos caligráficos y en el contenido textual de las inscripciones oficiales, así como en la difusión y la influencia de los mismos en la epigrafía del Magreb y de al-Andalus desde finales del siglo XII.

This paper aims to rediscover, contextualize and call attention to a work of maghāzī commissioned by the Almohad caliph al-Murtaḍā, found in manuscript 296 of the Qarawiyyīn library, and hitherto unnoticed by the vast majority of researchers. This work should be seen and read in the framework of the Almohad historical context in which it was written. I will also highlight the intellectual project and the legitimizing interests shown by the caliph al-Murtaḍā who, in the context of the crisis of (...) the Almohad Empire, encouraged the revival of the Unitary movement through a new reading of the remembrance of the early days of Islam and of the Almohad movement, and of jihād. I will include the paleographic edition of the introduction to the manuscript as an annex. In this introduction one may already observe examples of some of the interesting points of this text. En Islam, la grande majorité des mouvements de réforme politique et religieuse invoquent un retour à la Tradition censément mise en place par Muhammad au VIIe siècle. Les Almohades ne dérogent pas, mais ils vont plus loin. Avec eux, l'Occident musulman s'émancipe du modèle oriental de l'islam. Pour légitimer l'exercice d'un pouvoir souverain autoréférentiel, Abd al-Mu¡min, le premier calife de la dynastie berbère almohade, utilise toutes les ressources, matérielles, idéologiques ou symboliques, parfois contradictoires entre elles, dont il dispose. Il (...) récupère l'héritage du califat omeyyade, en transférant la capitale administrative d'al-Andalus de Séville à Cordoue, il rend aux tribus arabes « perturbatrices de l'ordre » le rôle originel de diffusion de l'islam et sur-tout il invente une relique à laquelle il fait célébrer un véritable culte, central dans l'idéologie du pouvoir qu'il met en place : un exemplaire du Coran attribué à "U" man b. Affan, le troisième calife « bien guidé » de l'islam. Dorénavant, dans un contexte eschatologique, c'est l¿Occident musulman tout entier, autour de la dynastie almohade, qui devient le nouveau berceau du Verbe divin. (shrink)

Los califas almohades afirmaron pertenecer a la tribu árabe de Qays cAylān por descendencia agnática. Qays cAylān no incluye a la tribu de Qurayš, con la que los mu'miníes afirmaban estar emparentados por línea materna. Según la doctrina clásica del califato, recogida por ejemplo por Ibn Hazm, los califas deben ser qurayšíes por línea paterna. En este artículo se analizan las ventajas que ofrecía a los califas mu'miníes esa ascendencia qaysí, de larga tradición entre las poblaciones beréberes del Norte (...) de África. Entre esas ventajas se cuentan la vinculación de parentesco con las tribus árabes de Sulaym y Hilāl, elementos fundamentales del ejército mu'miní, y con el profeta árabe pre-islámico Jālid b. Este artículo consta de dos partes. En la primera se corrige la lectura becba por F. Codera (y seguida por autores posteriores) de un dinar acuitado en Ceuta en 543H., corrección que demuestra que se trata de usa dinar antialmohade. En la segunda parte, siguiendo el trabajo pionero de 5. Fontenla, se analiza la cuestión de si tbn Titmart acuitó moneda, proponiendo una respuesta negativa a partir de una discusión sobre el siguificado del "mabdismo" del fundador del movimiento almohade. Una (...) cuestión relacionada es la de la licitud de acuitar moneda, negada por tbn Itazm. Tras discutir basta qué punto la peculiar forma de acuitar moneda por los almohades pudo haber estado influida por las teorías monetarias de tbn Itazm, se plantea la influencia de éstas en época del califa almohade al-Mansúr, así como en época del sultán ayyubí al-Malik al-Kámil Muhanimad. Based on Almohad or on subsequent texts which were not totally «desalmohadised», this study tries to show that during the time of the Almohads, the word ṭalaba was first used by Ibn Tūmart to designate his Companions and secondly, from the time of ‛Abd al-Mu’min onward, to refer to the official «clerks» organised in a corporate body and distributed all over the Empire: ṭālib-oithe-attendance working for the caliph on the one hand, and on the other hand the local groups of (...) ṭālib called «Almohads’ ‛ṭālib» posted in every city working for the local governor. As they were contemporaries of Ibn Rušd it is interesting to examine in our text their presence around the philosopher qāḍī of Cordoba. (shrink)

Partiendo de textos almohades o de textos posteriores que no han sido completamente desalmohadizados, este artículo quiere establecer que entre los almohades la palabra ṭalaba fue primero elegida por Ibn Tūmart para designar a sus compañeros, y fue después —a partir de ‛Abd al-Mu’min— utilizada para nombrar a los «legistas» oficiales del régimen, organizados en una sólida corporación, con grupos repartidos en todo el imperio: el grupo de los talibes-de-la-presencia al servicio del califa, y los grupos de los (...) talibes locales, talibes-de-los-almohades instalados en cada ciudad, al servicio del gobernador. Puesto que la época de los talibes es también la de Ibn-Rušd, ha parecido interesante examinar lo que revelan nuestros textos de la presencia de estos talaba en el entorno del filósofo qāḍī de Córdoba. La palabra amr («orden dada» - «autoridad») vino a ser, entre los Almoha-des Mu'miníes, una denominación utilizada para designar a `Abd al-Mu'min y a cada uno de sus sucesores los califas: « al-Amr » («la Autoridad»), «háda l-Amr» («esta Autoridad»). Este artículo propone como origen de este uso mu'miní el recuerdo de las exclamaciones atribuidas al mahdi Ibn Tumart, en las cuales había designado a `Abd al-Mu'min como el futuro poseedor del amr; entre estas exclamaciones tumartíes se debe dar un (...) lugar de preferencia a la que -entendida de otra manera hasta ahora- había proferido poco tiempo antes de su muerte, al enterarse de la derrota almohade de la Buhayra. Se reconstruyen en este artículo las familias Banū l-Ṭaylasān, Banū l-Šarrāṭ y Banū Ayyaš y se estudian las relaciones de parentesco establecidas entre ellas mediante una estrategia de alianzas matrimoniales diseñada por Abū l-Qāsim al-Šarrāṭ. Se aprecia cómo estos lazos familiares van estrechamente unidos a las relaciones de transmisión del saber, especialmente hadiz y ciencias coránicas. Se analizan asimismo las nisbas anṣāríes, posiblemente adoptadas tardíamente, que exhiben todos ellos.

Partimos de un recorrido histórico por acuñaciones almohades o postalmohades que, o bien no han sido registradas, o bien necesitan nuevas lecturas o atribuciones. Ello nos permite ofrecer una hipótesis sobre las monedas de plata acuñadas por Idrís al-Mamón y afiadir algunos registros al corpus numismático del Occidente islámico en la Baja Edad Media. Ese trabajo nos permite, por otro lado, afrontar el discurso islámico dominante que surgió a raíz de la llamada revolución almohade, lo que hacemos centrándonos en (...) varias cuestiones, entre ellas: 1) la densidad del mensaje sobre la vida etema en las inscripciones almohades, que derivan de la fuente absoluta del corán; 2) el problema de si es necesaria, de cara a la salvación, la presencia de guías históricos; 3) la evolución de la teología negativa ala afirmativa, y 4) la estrecha relación entre el discurso numismático y las chíes almohades y postalmohades. The accusation of Jewish ancestry formulated against Ibn Rushd al-Ḥafīd when he was exiled to Lucena is analyzed taking into account similar accusations made against other Andalusis during the Almoravid and Almohad periods, as well as Muslim representations of the Jews in which these were often depicted as agents of foreign heresies. The influence of the context of suspicion and anxiety created by the forced conversion of the Jews in the early Almohad period in such accusations is also dealt with.

While the great medieval philosopher, theologian, and physician Maimonides is acknowledged as a leading Jewish thinker, his intellectual contacts with his surrounding world are often described as related primarily to Islamic philosophy. Maimonides in His World challenges this view by revealing him to have wholeheartedly lived, breathed, and espoused the rich Mediterranean culture of his time.Sarah Stroumsa argues that Maimonides is most accurately viewed as a Mediterranean thinker who consistently interpreted his own Jewish tradition in contemporary multicultural terms. The first eulogies (Qaṣāīd) about the Prophet Muḥammad (pbuh) appeared when he was still alive. Ḥassān ibn Thābit (d. 60/680 [?]), ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥa (d. 8/629) and Kaʿb b. Mālik (d. 50/670), important Muslim poets of the period, praised the Prophet and inspired future generations of poets. Depending on the developments in the following centuries, there had been a great increase in the number of poems sung to express enthusiastic feelings towards the Prophet and to defend him and his (...) Prophethood. Andalusia is one of the places where this genre increased the most. The first examples of the praise of the Prophet appeared in Andalusia during the Mulūk al-Ṭawāʾif period (1031-1090). The praises of the Prophet, which were processed in the poems of asceticism, dirge and elegy until the end of the 5th/11th century, became an independent genre called al-Madāʾiḥ al-Nabawiyyah/Nabawiyyāt thanks to the ever-increasing Ṣūfī thoughts penetrating literary circles. The turning point of the praise of the Prophet in Andalusia, as in the East, is the period of the The Almohads (1147-1238), which coincides with the 7th/13th century. The mawlid celebrations, which were first initiated by the Fāṭimids in the 4th/10th century to give legitimacy to their rule, and held every year in North Africa on the twelfth of the month of Rabi'ulawwal, moved to Andalusia at the end of the The Almohad period and gradually became one of the largest official and religious holidays in Andalusia. Giving awards to high-quality poems read on the mawlid festival and celebrations made all over Andalusia has greatly contributed to the literary richness in this field. In praise of the Prophet, talented poets such as Abū Zayd al-Fāzāzī (d. 627/ 1230), Ibn al-Jannān al-Anṣārī (d. 650/1252), Ibn Jābir (d. 780/1378) and Ibn Zumruk (d. 797/1395) emerged. Abū Zayd al-Fāzāzī, one of the most distinguished Prophetic ode poets of the Almohad period is said to have first pioneered the spread of Prophetic praises in Andalusia before the Iraqi poet Yaḥyā al-Ṣarṣarī (d. 656/1258) and the Egyptian poet Būṣīrī (d. 695/1296). He has a dīvān called al-Wasā’il al-mutaqabbalah, which he wrote in alphabetical order and dedicated to the praise of the Prophet. The fame of the odes he uttered about the Prophet spread as far as North Africa, and it has become a tradition to read his odes on special days. Because of the abundance and quality of Prophetic odes, Ibn al-Jannān, who witnessed the glorious days and the collapse of the The Almohad state, also commemorated the poet Ḥassān ibn Thābit, The Prophet’s Odic Poet. Ibn Jābir al-Andalusī, on the other hand, wrote the second ode in this field after Ṣafī al-Dīn al-Ḥilli (d. 749/1348), the inventor of the axiomatic odes, and became the pioneer of axiomatic odes in Andalusia. The effect of political instability on Prophetic odes in Andalusia, which entered its collapse with the end of the Almohad state, is obvious. According to many poets, salvation from this plight of Muslims in Andalusia is possible by once again adhering to the Sunnah of the Prophet. Probably as a reflection of this idea, many poets from 7th/13th centuries onwards devoted their odes to narrating the Prophet and his Sunnah. Poets who describe the Prophet elaborately in their poems hope to be saved from the troubles they have fallen into and to reach the highest rank in heaven. Poets who touched upon the physical characteristics of the Prophet often likened his smiling face to a bright sun and a full moon. In terms of oratory, they stated that he had a fluent language and never uttered bad words. Andalusian poets, who praised the Prophet with moral virtues such as tolerance, justice and courage, stated that there was nobody more merciful and generous than him due to the abundance of his blessings resembling torrential rain. Andalusian Prophetic ode poets adhered to the traditional forms of Arabic poetry in terms of the structure of eulogy. In the introductory parts of odes, they generally express longing for the Prophet and the holy places. The main theme is mostly the Prophet and his outstanding virtues, and they usually end their eulogies with salutation to the Prophet. Save a few Sufi poets, it can be said that they used simple and understandable language in their poems. The sources of inspiration for their poems are the Qur'an and hadiths. Andalusian poets used non-material axiomatic arts in their poems without disturbing the structure of eulogy. In addition to the art of pun, they provided musicality in the poem with the ‘tent-frame’ meter and rhyme scheme, sometimes supporting it through repetition. It is possible to see all kinds of repetitions in, Ibn al-Jannān's odes. In this study, the place of the Prophet in Andalusia and odes, which are reflections of the love for him, will be examined. In addition, the concept of the Prophet in Andalusia will be explained within the political, social and cultural framework of the period. (shrink)

This essay argues that what is provoking about Ibn Rushd today is not his stance on such topics as the eternity of the world, God's knowledge of singular things, or the immortality of the soul. It is rather his radical philosophical elitisim, i.e., his view that every religion has room for philosophy, but only for the few - the majority must simply follow holy writ and leave all questioning and allegorical interpretation to those few individuals who possess sufficient training in (...) apodictic thinking. I start out with chapters on Salman Rushdie and his view of Ibn Rushd in the novel Two Years, Eight Months and Twenty-Eight Nights and the reception of Ibn Rushd in the Latin scholastic tradition. I then switch to Ibn Rushd’s biography and the context of his work in Almohad Andalusia. I provide an overview of the development of Islamic philosophy up until Ibn Rushd. I then, in five chapters, offer a detailed reading of his fatwa in defense of philosophy (called the Decisive Treatise). I conclude with some general remarks on the relationship between metaphysics and politics in Ibn Rushd’s works, drawing parallels to other thinkers both in the Islamic and in the Western tradition. The book ends with a selection of Danish-language translations of texts by Ibn Rushd that were translated into Latin during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance (his Letter to a friend concerning God’s knowledge of singular things, the last chapter of the Incoherence of the Incoherence, and commenta 5 and 36 from the Commentary on De anima III). Numerosas fuentes de toda Europa afirmaron que antes de la batalla de Las Navas de Tolosa el Miramamolín almohade al-Nāṣir proclamó su deseo de combatir a toda la cristiandad en una gran batalla campal. Asociada al recuerdo de la gran victoria cristiana, la noticia del «desafío del Miramamolín» apareció en la cronística hispánica y europea del siglo XIII en diferentes versiones y experimentó un progresivo enriquecimiento. Ello permite observar un hecho singular y relevante en la historiografía medieval: la conversión de (...) una noticia incierta en un hecho histórico y hasta documentado debido a su carácter excepcional o aleccionador. El análisis de su cronología durante el crítico período 1195-1212 y de su posible origen «histórico» permiten considerar el «desafío del Miramamolín» un rumor de gran difusión espacio-temporal cargado de intencionalidad ideológicopropagandística y enmarcado en el contexto de la crisis bélico-religiosa que envolvió la cruzada hispánica de Las Navas de Tolosa. Hecho real o supuesto, este episodio es interesante porque fue considerado cierto por muchos de los contemporáneos, lo que explica su posterior importancia historiográfica. Por la misma razón es posible observar en él buena parte de los elementos ideológicos y psicológicos que formaban parte de la mentalidad bélica de la cristiandad de principios del siglo XIII. (shrink)
