    Starting from Shaftesbury's criticism of Locke's moral philosophy an attempt is made to elucidate Locke's conception of ethics. An analysis of Locke's notion of moral goodness shows that moral philosophy in the Essay concerning Human Understanding is conceived in an egoistichedonistic way.
