As a leading member of the Vienna Circle, Rudolph Carnap's aim was to bring about a "unified science" by applying a method of logical analysis to the empirical data of all the sciences. This work, first published in English in 1934, endeavors to work out a way in which the observation statements required for verification are not private to the observer. The work shows the strong influence of Wittgenstein, Russell, and Frege.

Moral behaviour, based on social norms, is commonly regarded as a hallmark of humans. Hitherto, humans are perceived to be the only species possessing social norms and to engage in moral behaviour. There is anecdotal evidence suggesting their presence in chimpanzees, but systematic studies are lacking. Here, we examine the evolution of human social norms and their underlying psychological mechanisms. For this, we distinguish between conventions, cultural social norms and universal social norms. We aim at exploring whether chimpanzees possess evolutionary (...) precursors of universal social norms seen in humans. Chimpanzees exhibit important preconditions for their presence and enforcement: tolerant societies, well-developed social-cognitive skills and empathetic competence. Here, we develop a theoretical framework for recognizing different functional levels of social norms and distinguish them from mere statistical behavioural regularities. Quasi social norms are found where animals behave functionally moral without having moral emotions. In proto social norms, moral emotions might be present but cannot be collectivized due to the absence of a uniquely human psychological trait, i.e. shared intentionality. Human social norms, whether they are universal or cultural, involve moral emotions and are collectivized. We will discuss behaviours in chimpanzees that represent potential evolutionary precursors of human universal social norms, with special focus on social interactions involving infants. We argue that chimpanzee infants occupy a special status within their communities and propose that tolerance towards them might represent a proto social norm. The latter terms are introduced, not by definitions, but by postulates of two kinds, theoretical postulates, e.g., basic laws of physics, and correspondence postulates which connect the theoretical terms with observation terms. As Hilbert has explained, both mathematics and theoretical physics can in this way be constructed in the form of uninterpreted calculi. It is here briefly indicated that by this method of construction also the mathematical terms have meanings (in a wider sense) assigned to them. The theoretical terms obtain at least an incomplete interpretation by means of the correspondence postulates. Rudolf Carnap (1891-1970) war einer der wichtigsten Vertreter der europäischen Philosophie der Zwischenkriegszeit wie auch der amerikanischen analytischen Philosophie der Nachkriegszeit. Seine frühen Tagebücher, mit deren Edition die Ausgabe seiner Schriften aus dem Nachlass eröffnet wird, bieten einen einzigartigen Einblick in die Motive und Gedanken einer Schlüsselfigur der Philosophie des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts und liefern unerlässliche Informationen zu Entstehung und Hintergrund von Carnaps Werk, aber auch zur (Vor-)Geschichte des Wiener Kreises und des Logischen Empirismus.

This is the Spanish translation, by Valeria Sol Valiño, of Rudolf Carnap’s classical text “Die logizistische Grundlegung der Mathematik”, which was originally presented at the Königsberg’s Symposium on Philosophy of Mathematics in 1930, and finally published in Erkenntnis in 1931.

Auch ohne besondere Fachkenntnisse ist das Wort Harmonie als ein Lehnwort aus dem Lateinischen und dieses wiederum nach dem Griechischen zu erkennen. Allerdings wird dadurch ein jahrhundertelanger Zusammenhang suggeriert, den es erst zu bestätigen gilt. Heute wird der Ausdruck im Deutschen sowohl als Haupt- als auch Eigenschaftswort in unterschiedlichen Zusammenhängen ganz selbstverständlich verwendet: etwa auch zur Beschreibung einer Ehe, Landschaft, nachträglichen Ergänzung o. ä. Wörterbücher bestätigen diesem Wortfeld zwar meist einen durchaus allgemeinen Rahmen, doch ergibt erst eine nähere Untersuchung, dass (...) es keineswegs aus der Musik stammt, sondern hier nur seine bekannteste Anwendung gefunden hat.
