Selection for Representation in Higher-Order Adaptation.Solvi Arnold, Reiji Suzuki & Takaya Arita - 2015 - Minds and Machines 25 (1):73-95.
A theory of the evolution of mind cannot be complete without an explanation of how cognition became representational. Artificial approximations of cognitive evolution do not, in general, produce representational cognition. We take this as an indication that there is a gap in our understanding of what drives evolution towards representational solutions, and propose a theory to fill this gap. We suggest selection for learning and selection for second order learning as the causal factors driving the emergence of innate and acquired (...)

Why Do Schools Fail? Dewey on Imagination.Keiichi Takaya - 2006 - Contemporary Pragmatism 3 (1):145-163.
Many educators today think that the school's lessons and activities do not stimulate or engage students' imaginations. In order to alleviate this problem, they tend to use images in conjunction with, or sometimes rather than, words; they employ so-called imaginative or creative activities rather than chalk and talk. However, these principles and methods are based on somewhat misguided or trivial understanding of the importance of imagination in students' lives. Dewey's understanding of the relevance of imagination gives us a useful perspective (...)

Demonstration of Understanding Through the Deployment of Japanese Enactment.Yuki Arita - 2021 - Human Studies 44 (2):305-331.
The present study examines the interactional phenomenon of enactment, wherein conversation participants act out themselves or others by utilizing both linguistic and non-linguistic resources and demonstrate certain ideas rather than describe them. While past research has revealed that people, based on their first- or second-hand experiences, frequently use enactment during storytelling activities to depict what story characters said and/or did, this article explores cases in which participants in Japanese conversations enact based on what co-participants have experienced. In such cases, producers (...)

The many gendered faces of teachers’ views on schools and security.Aida Alvinius & Arita Holmberg - 2021 - European Journal of Women's Studies 28 (1):71-85.
This article analyses the gendered nature of teachers’ views on schools and security. Current research on security emphasizes masculinity and the absence of femininity in relation to the security field – traditionally dominated by the military and emergency rescue services. However, there is a lack of knowledge on the areas of society that are new to the security field. Schools, pupils and teachers are gendered in many ways. What happens when security is added to this nexus? Existing, limited research suggests (...)

Discourses of the Willkommenskultur (Welcoming culture) in Germany.Friederike Windel, Arita Balaram & Krystal M. Perkins - 2022 - Critical Discourse Studies 19 (1):93-116.
Given the rise of populist parties in Germany and the charge that multiculturalism is dead, the present research examines how everyday Germans formulate an account of cultural diversity and multiculturalism. We employ a critical discursive psychological analysis and focus particularly on the arguments used to criticize cultural diversity and multiculturalism. Asynchronous online interviews were conducted with eighteen native-born German citizens. The data analysis shows that participants criticized cultural diversity and multiculturalism by deploying ‘Leitkultur-style’ nationalistic discourses and normalizing the hierarchical relations (...)

    Mu‘tazilites, al-Ash‘ari and Maimonides on Divine Attributes.

  20. Mu‘tazilites, al-Ash‘ari and Maimonides on Divine Attributes.Catarina Belo - 2007 - Veritas – Revista de Filosofia da Pucrs 52 (3):117-131.
This article analyses the debate concerning divine attributes in medieval Islamic theology (kalam), more specifically in Mu‘tazilite and in Ash‘arite theology. It further compares their approach with that of medieval Jewish philosopher Moses Maimonides (d. 1204). In particular it studies the identification of the divine attributes with God’s essence in Mu‘tazilite theology, which flourished in the first half of the 9th century. It discusses the Ash‘arite response that followed, and which consisted in considering God’s attributes as real entities separate from (...)
