In the context of European integration, the great French Christian philosopher Jacques Maritain and his influence on the European project in the mid-20th century are mentioned very rarely. This paper seeks to shed some light on his somehow hidden role in this context, especially given the central role of freedom of conscience within the personalist philosophical heritage to which Maritain belonged and the political philosophy he shaped, which had a key impact on the European project and its basic documents. Freedom (...) of conscience is seen here as the cornerstone of all human freedoms despite all the risks and complications that this entails. In all conflicts between the State and the conscience, it is necessary and desirable to always go in favour of the conscience or at least to lean towards political solutions that respect or at least do not despise the conscience of the person. Whenever we face seemingly unsolvable problems in such conflicts, dialogue and negotiation should always be chosen instead of violence and imposition. (shrink)

Let ℛ be an o-minimal expansion of a real closed field R. We continue here the investigation we began in [11] of differentiability with respect to the algebraically closed field [Formula: see text]. We develop the basic theory of such K-differentiability for definable functions of several variables, proving theorems on removable singularities as well as analogues of the Weierstrass preparation and division theorems for definable functions. We consider also definably meromorphic functions and prove that every definable function which is meromorphic (...) on Kn is necessarily a rational function. We finally discuss definable analogues of complex analytic manifolds, with possible connections to the model theoretic work on compact complex manifolds, and present two examples of "nonstandard manifolds" in our setting. We investigate the group of definable homomorphisms between two definable abelian groups A and B, in an o-minimal structure . We prove the existence of a “large”, definable subgroup of . If contains an infinite definable set of homomorphisms then some definable subgroup of B admits a definable multiplication, making it into a field. As we show, all of this can be carried out not only in the underlying structure but also in any structure definable in.

Le but de cet article consiste à présenter des influences de l’évolutionnisme Darwinien et des idées de Frederick Matthias Alexander sur l’esthétique naturaliste de John Dewey. Ces influences menaient Dewey à sa propre version de l’esthétique naturaliste, c’est-à-dire une conception large, non cartésienne, dynamique d’un sujet, qui peut aussi inclure des animaux. Par conséquent John Dewey construisait une sorte d’anti-anthropocentrisme, ce qui décidait que son esthétique était en avance sur son temps.

A number of twenty-first century television series explore the irruption of AI devices into our daily lives, highlighting not only human interaction with AI, but posing disturbing and new ontological considerations: humans wondering how they are different from machines, or those of machines being unaware that they are machines and only discovering so belatedly. Within these series, the emergence of these thoughts is accompanied by the staging of interspecies friendship and romance: the metaphysical question of freedom gives way to the (...) question of attachment, and then the problem of autonomy gives way to that of interdependence. It is this passage from metaphysical speculation to political reflection that I would like to demonstrate. (shrink)

Peut-être plus encore que d’autres affects, elle se place à l’articulation de questions psychologiques, anthropologiques et esthétiques, comme l’a montré l’histoire faite de Stephen Cave du concept de recognition. Ses mutations historico-esthétiques disent nos modes de redécouverte de l’autre, de la question de la cicatrice d’Homère à celle des retours des survivants de la Shoah, de l’anagnorisis grecque jusqu’au (...) romans de la reconnaissance impossible ( Le Colonel Chabert de Balzac) en passant par les problèmes posés aux dramaturges classiques par son usage. C’est sur ce chassé-croisé entre représentation et configuration performative par l’art de la reconnaissance que je voudrais me pencher. (shrink)
