‘Mother Russia’ at Work: Gender Divisions in the Medical Profession.Jeni Harden - 2001 - European Journal of Women's Studies 8 (2):181-199.
One of the most significant changes in the medical professions in Europe is the trend towards feminization. Some of the patterns of gender inequality arising from the feminization of the European medical professions are clearly apparent within the Russian medical profession, which experienced feminization 70 years ago. Yet little is known about the processes by which these patterns of gender inequality emerged and were maintained. This article is based on interviews with female doctors in Voronezh, Russia in 1996. It explores (...)

Koch's Postulates and the Etiology of AIDS: An Historical Perspective.Victoria A. Harden - 1992 - History and Philosophy of the Life Sciences 14 (2):249 - 269.
This paper examines the debate over the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) as the cause of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) from an historical perspective. The changing criteria for proving the link between putative pathological agents and diseases are discussed, beginning with Robert Koch's research on anthrax in the late nineteenth century. Various versions of 'Koch's postulates' are analyzed in relation to the necessity and sufficiency arguments of logical reasoning. In addition, alterations to Koch's postulates are delineated, specifically those required by the (...)

Building causal knowledge in behavior genetics.James W. Madole & K. Paige Harden - 2023 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 46:e182.
Behavior genetics is a controversial science. For decades, scholars have sought to understand the role of heredity in human behavior and life-course outcomes. Recently, technological advances and the rapid expansion of genomic databases have facilitated the discovery of genes associated with human phenotypes such as educational attainment and substance use disorders. To maximize the potential of this flourishing science, and to minimize potential harms, careful analysis of what it would mean for genes to be causes of human behavior is needed. (...)

« Les femmes de Troyes ont toujours été des bagarreuses, ah oui, très batailleuses... Jamais j'ai vu des femmes résignées à Troyes ». Suzanne Gallois définit ainsi les bonnetières troyennes. Au bout d'une vie très longue d'activité militante, elle n'a rien perdu de sa verve, de sa passion du syndicalisme. Organizational ethical standards and organizational commitment.Janie M. Harden Fritz, Ronald C. Arnett & Michele Conkel - 1999 - Journal of Business Ethics 20 (4):289 - 299.
Organizations interested in employee ethics compliance face the problem of conflict between employee and organizational ethical standards. Socializing new employees is one way of assuring compliance. Important for longer term employees as well as new ones, however, is making those standards visible and then operable in the daily life of an organization. This study, conducted in one large organization, found that, depending on organizational level, awareness of an organization's ethical standards is predicted by managerial adherence to and organizational compliance with (...)

We examined cynicism as a mediator of the influence of managers’ mission-congruent communication and behavior about ethical standards (a form of supervisory behavioral integrity) on employee attitudes and intended behavior. Results indicated that cynicism partially mediates the relationship between supervisory behavioral integrity and organizational commitment, but not the relationship between supervisory behavioral integrity and intent to comply with organizational expectations for employee conduct.

For the public good: weaving a multifunctional landscape in the Corn Belt. [REVIEW]Noelle M. Harden, Loka L. Ashwood, William L. Bland & Michael M. Bell - 2013 - Agriculture and Human Values 30 (4):525-537.
Critics of modern agriculture decry the dominance of monocultural landscapes and look to multifunctionality as a desirable alternative that facilitates the production of public goods. In this study, we explored opportunities for multifunctional Midwestern agriculture through participatory research led by farmers, landowners, and other local actors. We suggest that agriculture typically fosters some degree of multifunctionality that arises from the divergent intentions of actors. The result is a scattered arrangement of what we term patchwork multifunctionality, a ubiquitous status quo in (...)

Reading the Signs: Guidance for the Pilgrim Community.Rebecca Harden Weaver - 2004 - Interpretation: A Journal of Bible and Theology 58 (1):28-41.
To interpret scripture, we must first recognize the “thing” of which it speaks: the incarnation understood through the commandments of love for God and neighbor. Scripture consists of “signs” that disclose that message. Interpreting the signs and communicating their meaning are dynamic processes that engage the “unquiet” of the human condition.

We received 23 spirited commentaries on our target article from across the disciplines of philosophy, economics, evolutionary genetics, molecular biology, criminology, epidemiology, and law. We organize our reply around three overarching questions: (1) What is a cause? (2) How are randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and within-family genome-wide association studies (GWASs) alike and unalike? (3) Is behavior genetics a qualitatively different enterprise? Throughout our discussion of these questions, we advocate for the idea that behavior genetics shares many of the same pitfalls (...)

Consumer Reactions to Tax Avoidance: Evidence from the United States and Germany.Inga Hardeck, J. William Harden & David R. Upton - 2019 - Journal of Business Ethics 170 (1):75-96.
This research investigates the impact of corporate tax strategies on consumers’ corporate social responsibility perceptions, willingness to pay, and attitude toward the firm in two laboratory experiments in the United States and Germany. Using the Becker–DeGroot–Marschak incentive-compatible mechanism, which avoids a social desirability bias found in prior research, our results indicate only a minor indirect effect of corporate tax strategies on WTP by way of the mediator CSR perceptions. However, we find a strong effect on attitude toward the firm again (...)

Ainda que não se busque a unidade, ou não se a exponha como orientadora, isto não é criticável: afinal, o projeto pós-moderno vislumbra um horizonte sem o comprometimento das totalidades e das verdades absolutas. The aim of this project was to study the way in which patients’ rights are being exercised in everyday hospital practice in Greece. Data were collected by using questionnaires and structured interviews with 600 patients. These patients were found to ignore the fact that special regulations exist regarding their rights. They considered their right to information was being respected, albeit to different degrees. Many patients allowed their doctors to make decisions. The right to confidentiality was not considered as a major priority (...)

In this consensus report by a diverse group of academics who conduct and/or are concerned about social and behavioral genomics (SBG) research, the authors recount the often‐ugly history of scientific attempts to understand the genetic contributions to human behaviors and social outcomes. They then describe what the current science—including genomewide association studies and polygenic indexes—can and cannot tell us, as well as its risks and potential benefits. They conclude with a discussion of responsible behavior in the context of SBG research. (...)
