Philology: The Forgotten Origins of the Modern Humanities.James Turner - 2014 - Princeton University Press.
A prehistory of today's humanities, from ancient Greece to the early twentieth century Many today do not recognize the word, but "philology" was for centuries nearly synonymous with humanistic intellectual life, encompassing not only the study of Greek and Roman literature and the Bible but also all other studies of language and literature, as well as history, culture, art, and more. In short, philology was the queen of the human sciences. How did it become little more than an (...)

    E-philology and Twitterature.Massimo Lollini & Rebecca Rosenberg - 2015 - Humanist Studies and the Digital Age 4 (1):116-163.
This paper presents an original use of Twitter to interpret and rewrite the poems of Francesco Petrarca's Rerum vulgarium fragmenta implemented within the Oregon Petrarch Open Book OPOB). This activity was partially inspired by the idea of Twitterature developed by Alexander Aciman and Emmett Rensin; we believe with them that our digital time should develop new and more functional ways of addressing literary texts but at the same time we are convinced that the "burdensome duty of hours spent reading" cannot (...)

A Philosophical Inquiry Into Subject English and Creative Writing.Oli Belas - 2022 - New York, NY: Routledge.
"While engaging with the current political-educational climate of England, this book offers a timely contribution to debates around questions of knowledge in relation to education and school-level English by drawing together theories of individual and disciplinary knowledge. The book provides a philosophical conception of knowledge - as fundamentally embodied at the level of the individual, and a matter of cultural form at the level of shared or "common" knowledge - and an analysis of the implications of this for schooled (...)

    Reflections on (new) philology.Siegfried Wenzel - 1990 - Speculum 65 (1):11-18.
As the following remarks are to reflect my own scholarly commitment and experience, I should begin by saying that they come from a medievalist who in his work is always conscious of dealing with the works of a past state of civilization. They also come from a historian of literature, who in contrast to political or economic historians makes written documents the subject of his study, and who in contrast to linguists looks at them as works of verbal art. And (...)

Grammatik der Lateinlsche Sprache, Bearbeitet von Dr H. Schweizer-Sidler, und Dr Alfred Stjrbee. Erster Theil Halle, 1888. This little book (of only 215 pages) is a new recension of Schweizer-Sidler's Latin Elementar und Formenlehre published in 1869. The importance of the present volume is that its writers have entirely recast their theory of Latin morphology in accordance with the procedure of the new school of Comparative Philology. It is much to be hoped that some competent English or American scholar will either translate the book into English, or write an original work of the same character. [REVIEW]N. Complementation in Middle English and Methodology of Historical Syntax.Anthony Warner - 1982 - Pennsylvania State University Press.
A syntax of a major area of Middle English, this book seeks to bridge the gap between philology and linguistics. The historical study of English syntax has suffered from being at the meeting point of two traditions: the philological, which tends to focus on the analysis of texts and to avoid questions of linguistic interpretations, and a more recent linguistic one, which tends to focus on the grammatical systems of languages and often fails to appreciate the limitations (...)

Avicenna, Book of the Healing, Isagoge (“Madḫal”) : Edition of the Arabic text, English translation and Commentary.Silvia Di Vincenzo - 2018 - Dissertation, Scuola Normale Superiore
The thesis deals with a section of the major philosophical summa by Avicenna (Ibn Sīnā, d. 1037), namely the Book of the Healing (Kitāb al-Šifāʾ). The summa is structured into four parts, devoted to Logic, Natural Philosophy, Mathematics and Metaphysics; the section at stake is Avicenna’s reworking of Porphyry’s Isagoge (Kitāb al-Madḫal, i.e. “Book of the Introduction”) opening the section of Logic of the Šifāʾ. The thesis is articulated into three main parts, namely (i) an edition of the Arabic text (...)

  14. Cheerful Creation of Words and Worlds: Nietzsche's "The Gay Science" in English Translation.Ruth Burch - 2022 - Existenz 15 (2):46-54.
The aim of this essay is to review Friedrich Nietzsche's "The Gay Science" in English Translation. It compares and contrasts the translations by Thomas Common, Walter Kaufmann, Josefine Nauckhoff, and R. Kevin Hill. First, I argue in favor of translating the work's title "Die Fröhliche Wissenschaft" as "The Gay Science" or perhaps more precisely as "The Gay Knowledge". Nietzsche who is likely the greatest stylist in the German language wrote with philological precision and succinctness. This exactitude and awareness of (...)

The Latin and Greek Roots of English Words Keyed to Selected and Targeted Vocabulary: For Use by High Schoolers, Middle Schoolers, Elementary Schoolers, Homeschoolers, and Self-Learners.Robert Zaslavsky - 2016 - CreateSpace.
This book is a tool intended to give readers a knowledge of, and feel for, the most basic building blocks of vocabulary, namely the roots that are the basis of so many English words. Knowing these roots enables readers to gain greater reading fluency. Armed with these roots, readers can guess the meanings of unfamiliar words without a feeling of helplessness and without unnecessary dependence upon a dictionary. In this way, reading becomes more fluid, more rewarding, less burdensome, and—most (...)

Political and Ecclesiological Contexts for the Early English Translations of Grotius’s De Veritate. [REVIEW]Marco Barducci - 2012 - Grotiana 33 (1):70-87.
Grotius’s attempt to find a compromise both between reason and revelation, and between free will and predestination, his philological approach to the reading of Scripture, his refusal to engage in doctrinal disputes, and his insistence on ethics as the core of Christian teaching, were increasingly important in shaping a powerful strand of thinking about the Anglican church from the Great Tew circle to post-Restoration latitudinarianism. The references to Grotius’s apologetic work which appeared in moderate Anglican writing should be understood by (...)

In 1637 a Frenchman named Noël Duret published a book in Paris that referred to the heliocentric Copernican system. In 1660 an Ottoman scholar named Ibrahim Efendi al-Zigetvari Tezkireci translated the book into Arabic. For more than three centuries this manuscript was buried in an Ottoman archive in Istanbul until it resurfaced at the beginning of the 1990s. The discovery of the Arabic text has necessitated a re-evaluation of the history of early modern Arabic natural philosophy, one that takes into (...)
