Nelson Goodman argues against those who, like Carnap, claim extensional identity is the criterion for correct constructional definition. Goodman argues that internal logical difficulties sink such a criterion, thus he proposes his own criterion of extensional isomorphism. We argue that Goodman's criterion itself falls prey to his own arguments or else extensional identity is not shown faulty.

Cet article examine, à partir de la philosophie du temps de Gilles Deleuze, la problématique de la faille entre l’être humain et le monde naturel décrite par Pierre Montebello dans son livre L'autre métaphysique. L’article présente la métaphysique deleuzienne comme une continuation de la lignée philosophique qui est tracée par Montebello. Il explore comment la philosophie du temps de Deleuze nous sert à penser les paysages – y compris ses habitants humains – non pas en termes d’espace ou d’étendue mais (...) dans une perspective temporelle et ce, à travers l’identification d’ensembles de processus temporels qui capturent certaines de leurs caractéristiques. Cette lecture « chronopédique » révèle les paysages comme compositions de rythmes à différentes échelles : des processus géologiques qui durent des millions d’années jusqu’à d’autres, beaucoup plus courts, comme celui de l’habitation humaine. Tout en proposant une nouvelle perspective sur le temps deleuzien, en le libérant des termes humains auxquels il est exposé, cette lecture nous fournit une base métaphysique puissante pour penser le dépassement de la bifurcation entre le monde humain et la nature. This paper uses Lawrence Venuti's writings on foreignising translation as a point of departure to examine the relevance of Deleuze's work to the discipline of translation studies. It begins by using Deleuze's earlier work to define translation as a problem of difference, drawing on concepts such as the simulacrum, the Virtual and the Actual, before using ideas from his collaborative works with Guattari, such as the minor and the nomad, to consider more practical aspects in terms of language. It is largely taken from my law review article entitled "'We Shall Not Be Moved': Eminent Domain, Urban Redevelopment and the Socioeconomics of Just Compensation" published by St. John's Law Review. That article can be downloaded from SSRN at http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=904224 This shorter piece focuses on the two proposals outlined in the second part of the law review article that (...) are designed to curb abuses of eminent domain in the urban redevelopment context without destroying its effectiveness as a tool for community revitalization and, even, community empowerment. Specifically, homeowners should not be subject to eminent domain pursuant to a redevelopment plan until the majority of them have approved the plan. To further solidify resident ownership of redevelopment, the right to continued residency in the community should be protected by amending relocation laws to guarantee an alienable entitlement to be offered replacement housing in the redeveloped district area. Together, these two legislative reforms express a more nuanced balance of property and liability rules that will facilitate a more productive interface between community residents and redevelopment officials. Reflecting on the distinction between thinking about a non-occurrent pain and feeling a current pain takes us into the domain of contemporary philosophy of mind. In the former case we talk of the mental state’s intentional properties, in the latter of phenomenal properties. Daniel Dennett’s contributions to this discussion are clearly limned in his Content and Consciousness and it is no accident that its reappearance as a paperback is so quickly followed by his new collection, The Intentional Stance. The latter (...) work continues to develop themes begun in the former, especially his embedding philosophy of mind within an evolutionary framework. For those interested in contemporary philosophy of mind and Dennett’s exciting and controversial views, Content and Consciousness provides an excellent introduction and even some much needed “cash” for his latter views.
