La distinction aristotélicienne entre science spéculative, pratique et poCtique permet de faire l'hypothèse qu'il existe autant de sortes de discours, en particulier des discours théorétiques et des discours pratiques. Je me trouve engagé, depuis plusieurs années, dans l'Ctude de ces derniers. De son côté, F. Gonseth a consacré de nombreuses pages àélucider le rôle du langage dans la connaissance. Il y a ainsi quelque intérêt à rappeler quelques‐unes des conclusions auxquelles il a abouti, afin de déterminer ce qui unit et (...) ce qui sépare discours théorétiques et discours pratiques. In this paper everyday reasoning is examined fromm the standpoint of natural logic. In natural logic there is the supposition of the concept of schematisation, i.e. the discursive representation of a situation that a speaker A constructs for a listener B and that B must reconstruct for himself.Under these circumstances, in order to prove that a statement s is true A must present it in such a way that B does not call it into question, that he considers it a (...) fact. For this it is necessary to have proofs. Moreover, a fact is never isolated and it may therefore appear inconsistent with other facts. A is thus led to provide reasons in order to substantiate his statements.Some mechanisms of proofs and of reasons are investigated. (shrink)

Ce volume couvre un domaine de recherche absolument nouveau : le champ qui s'étend de la logique à l'argumentation. Après une analyse rigoureuse des fondements de la logique mathématique, l'auteur montre l'importance de l'argumentation et des preuves argumentatives dans les affaires humaines. Il tente ensuite de fonder scientifiquement l'étude des argumentations et d'ouvrir de nouvelles voies dans le domaine jusqu'ici peu connu de la logique naturelle. Les pages qui sont dans ce volume consacrées à la logique naturelle sont d'une nouveauté (...) absolue, et valent comme un apport de premier ordre au débat actuel sur la crise de la Raison. J.B. Mais la formalisation classique se heurte à certaines difficultés.2On montre, par la méthode L de Gentzen, que c'est la partie positive de la logique intuitionniste qui exprime au plus près l'idée intuitive de l'implication.3L'implication est liée à la négation. The literature on organizational ethics has paved the way for a situated and intersubjective understanding of ethics through caring practices. In this article, we try to extend this perspective by looking beyond the interactions of caregivers among themselves or with care seekers to reveal ethics as the ongoing collective accomplishment of a variety of actors. We do so by mobilizing Strauss’s theoretical perspective of articulation work in the context of healthcare. Based on an ethnography, we show how actors of care (...) (e.g., nurses, caregivers, or doctors) operate within care arrangements that need to be frequently rearticulated to face ethical threats and protect their patients’ well-being. We distinguish three types of rearticulation corresponding to different degrees of rearticulation, individual actor stance, and specific ways of working things out. We discuss their implications for the maintenance of organizational ethics. (shrink)

The author argues the following hypothesis: the medical clinic is an experimental practice, in the sense given to this term by Claude Bernard, and the clinic is its specific laboratory. Its object is not the disease, but the patient. Careful examination of the clinic attests to its very close proximity to the experimental method, and the comparison also raises a number of difficulties. The main obstacle arises from the specificity of medicine, which involves treating individual human subjects whose words cannot (...) be suppressed. This challenging and provocative book argues against much contemporary orthodoxy in philosophy and the social sciences by showing why objectivity in the domain of ethics is really no different from the objectivity of scientific knowledge. Many philosophers and social scientists have challenged the idea that we act for objectively authoritative reasons. Jean Hampton takes up the challenge by undermining two central assumptions of this contemporary orthodoxy: that one can understand instrumental reasons without appeal to objective authority, and that the (...) adoption of the scientific world view requires no such appeal. In the course of the book Jean Hampton examines moral realism, the general nature of reason and norms, internalism and externalism, instrumental reasoning, and the expected utility model of practical reasoning.
