The Languages of the Law: An Integrated View From Vico and Conceptual Metaphor Theory. [REVIEW]Marcel Danesi - 2012 - International Journal for the Semiotics of Law - Revue Internationale de Sémiotique Juridique 25 (1):95-106.
Work on the relation between figurative language and the law is a fairly recent trend, within legal discourse studies, linguistics, and semiotics. The work in conceptual metaphor theory, for example, is starting to unpack the underlying metaphorical and metonymic structure of legal language, producing some new and important insights into the nature of this language. Missing from this emerging line of inquiry are the views of the Neapolitan philosopher Giambattista Vico, who was the first to understand the power of figurative (...)

Opposition Theory and Computational Semiotics.Dan Assaf, Yochai Cohen, Marcel Danesi & Yair Neuman - 2015 - Sign Systems Studies 43 (2/3):159-172.
Opposition theory suggests that binary oppositions underlie basic cognitive and linguistic processes. However, opposition theory has never been implemented in a computational cognitive-semiotics model. In this paper, we present a simple model of metaphor identification that relies on opposition theory. An algorithm instantiating the model has been tested on a data set of 100 phrases comprising adjective-noun pairs in which approximately a half represent metaphorical language-use and the rest literal language-use. The algorithm achieved 89% accuracy in metaphor identification and illustrates (...)

Opposition Theory and the Interconnectedness of Language, Culture, and Cognition.Marcel Danesi - 2009 - Sign Systems Studies 37 (1/2):11-41.
The theory of opposition has always been viewed as the founding principle of structuralism within contemporary linguistics and semiotics. As an analytical technique, it has remained a staple within these disciplines, where it continues to be used as a means for identifying meaningful cues in the physical form ofsigns. However, as a theory of conceptual structure it was largely abandoned under the weight of post-structuralism starting in the 1960s — the exception tothis counter trend being the work of the Tartu (...)

The Italian philosopher Giambattista Vico foreshadowed many of the ideas currently being entertained by the modem cognitive and human sciences. By emphasizing the role of the imagination in the production of meaning, Vico showed how truly ingenious the fIrst forms of representation were. His view that these forms were "poetic" is only now being given serious attention, as more and more linguists and psychologists come to realize the role of metaphor in the generation of abstract systems of representation. The Estonian (...)

A Conceptual Metaphor Framework for the Teaching of Mathematics.Marcel Danesi - 2007 - Studies in Philosophy and Education 26 (3):225-236.
Word problems in mathematics seem to constantly pose learning difficulties for all kinds of students. Recent work in math education. Where mathematics comes from: How the embodied mind brings mathematics into being. New York: Basic Books]) suggests that the difficulties stem from an inability on the part of students to decipher the metaphorical properties of the language in which such problems are cast. A 2003 pilot study [Danesi, M.. Semiotica, 145, 71–83] confirmed this hypothesis in an anecdotal way. This paper (...)

    A Semiotic Note on Accuracy and Precision in Mathematics.Marcel Danesi - 2012 - American Journal of Semiotics 28 (3/4):169 - 173.
The concept of accuracy in mathematics is something that is rarely discussed. It is taken for granted, mainly because the various symbolic tools of the discipline, such as the digits and its equations, are meant to have a precise interpretation within the primary referential field. Yet, mathematics is full of inaccuracies and imprecise notions and techniques. The science of limits or the calculus, for example, is the science of imprecision, since it is based on the notions of “approximation”. Yet, the (...)

This study looks at the relation between mathematical discovery and semiosis, focusing on the famous Fibonacci sequence. The serendipitous discovery of this sequence as the answer to a puzzle designed by Italian mathematician Leonardo Fibonacci to illustrate the efficiency of the decimal number system is one of those episodes in human history which show how serendipity, semiosis, and discovery are intertwined. As such, the sequence has significant implications for the study of creative semiosis, since it suggests that symbols are hardly (...)
