This article explores the proposal offered by Ian Hacking for the distinction between natural and social sciences—a proposal that he has defined from the outset as complex and different from the traditional ones. Our objective is not only to present the path followed by Hacking’s distinction, but also to determine if it constitutes a novelty or not. For this purpose, we deemed it necessary to briefly introduce the core notions Hacking uses to establish his strategic approach to social sciences, under (...) the assumption that they are less well known that the ones corresponding to his treatment of natural sciences. Turing was an exceptional mathematician with a peculiar and fascinating personality and yet he remains largely unknown. In fact, he might be considered the father of the von Neumann architecture computer and the pioneer of Artificial Intelligence. And all thanks to his machines; both those that Church called “Turing machines” and the a-, c-, o-, unorganized- and p-machines, which gave rise to evolutionary computations and genetic programming as well as connectionism and learning. Abstract. The notion of similarity has been studied in many areas of Computer Science; in a general sense, this concept is defined to provide a measure of the semantic equivalence between two pieces of knowledge, expressing how “close” their meaning can be regarded. In this work, we study similarity as a tool useful to improve the representation of arguments, the interpretation of the relations between arguments, and the semantic evaluation associated with the arguments in the argumentative process. In this direction, (...) we present a novel mechanism to determine the similarity between two arguments based on descriptors representing particular aspects associated with these arguments. This mechanism involves a comparison process influenced by the context in which the process develops, where this context provides the relevant aspects that need to be analyzed in the application domain. Then, we use this similarity measure as a quantity to compute the result of attacks and supports in the argumentation process. These valuations, applied to a Bipolar Argumentation Frameworks, allowed us to refine the argument relations, providing the tools to establish a family of new argumentation semantics that considers the similarity between arguments as a crucial part for the argumentation process. In the centenary year of Turing’s birth, a lot of good things are sure to be written about him. But it is hard to find something new to write about Turing. This is the biggest merit of this article: it shows how von Neumann’s architecture of the modern computer is a serendipitous consequence of the universal Turing machine, built to solve a logical problem.

The state of computing science and, particularly, software engineering and knowledge engineering is generally considered immature. The best starting point for achieving a mature engineering discipline is a solid scientific theory, and the primary reason behind the immaturity in these fields is precisely that computing science still has no such agreed upon underlying theory. As theories in other fields of science do, this paper formally establishes the fundamental elements and postulates making up a first attempt at a theory in this (...) field, considering the features and peculiarities of computing science. The fundamental elements of this approach are informons and holons, and it is a general and comprehensive theory of software engineering and knowledge engineering that related disciplines (e.g., information systems) can particularise and/or extend to take benefit from it (Lakatos’ concepts of core theory and protective belt theories). The concept of measuring inconsistency in information was developed by John Grant in a 1978 paper in the context of first-order logic. For more than 20 years very little was done in this area until in the early 2000s a number of AI researchers started to formulate new inconsistency measures primarily in the context of propositional logic knowledge bases. The aim of this volume is to survey what has been done so far, to expand inconsistency measurement to other formalisms, to (...) connect it with related topics, and to provide ideas for further research in a topic that is particularly relevant now in view of the many inconsistencies in the massive amount of information available. The book contains 11 chapters. The first chapter, by John Grant, gives his original motivation for starting this field, explains why it was formulated in a highly mathematical manner, presents important material that was omitted from the original paper, and provides ideas about the use of dimensions in measuring inconsistency. The second chapter, by Matthias Thimm, is a survey that covers most of the research on inconsistency measures up to 2017. The other 9 chapters, all by experts either in inconsistency measures, or in the topic under consideration, or both, connect inconsistency measures with argumentation, disjunctive logic programming, fuzzy logic systems, modal logics, multiset representation, paraconsistent consequence, probabilistic logic, relational databases, and spatio-temporal databases."-- back cover. The EU's Farm to Fork strategy (European Commission European Commission. 2020. Farm to Fork strategy. https://food.ec.europa.eu/horizontal-topics/farm-fork-strategy_en. Accessed 31 August 2023.) highlights the need for a resilient food system capable of providing affordable food to citizens in all circumstances. Behind the provision of affordable food for EU citizens there is the effort of many migrant and seasonal food workers (MSFWs). In Almería, Spain, the area with the biggest concentration of greenhouses in the world, MSFWs face vulnerability in the form of physical (...) and institutional invisibility despite performing the essential task of providing affordable food for the EU’s food system. This paper aims to move on from structuralist concerns and place MSFWs’ lived experiences at the center, including the (in)formal nature of their food practices, to understand how the people that feed Europe feed themselves. A combination of social practice theories and diverse economies is used to explore MFSWs’ daily food routines. These theories are used as lenses that inform the data collection process, performed through semi-structured interviews, photography, and observations. The findings of the study reflect a dynamic portfolio of (in)formal practices that evolve based on the length of stay in the county. These practices demonstrate how the EU food system resilience relies on the diverse economies of migrant settlements. We conclude that informality is a reality in the EU food system, and that shedding light on previously hidden food practices and their structures can help us envision food security interventions that are inclusive for all actors involved. Ian Hacking has defined himself as a philosopher in the analytic tradition. However, he has also recognized the profound influence that Michel Foucault had on much of his work. In this article I analyse the specific imprint of certain works by Foucault—in particular Les mots et les choses—in two of Hacking’s early works: Why Does Language Matter to Philosophy? and The Emergence of Probability. I propose that these texts not only share a debt of Foucauldian thought, but also are part (...) of what I believe is Hacking’s central project: the analysis of the historical and situated conditions of possibility for the emergence of concepts and of objects, inspired also by the French philosopher’s thought. This paper presents the manner in which the DNA, the molecule of life, was discovered. Unlike what many people, even biologists, believe, it was Johannes Friedrich Miescher who originally discovered and isolated nuclein, currently known as DNA, in 1869, 75 years before Watson and Crick unveiled its structure. Also, in this paper we show, and above all demonstrate, the serendipity of this major discovery. Like many of his contemporaries, Miescher set out to discover how cells worked by means of studying (...) and analysing their proteins. During this arduous task, he detected an unexpected substance of unpredicted properties. This new substance precipitated when he added acid to the solution and it dissolved again when adding alkali. Unexpectedly and by a mere fluke, Miescher was the first person to obtain a DNA precipitate. The paper then presents the term serendipity and discusses how it has influenced the discovery of other important scientific milestones. Finally, we address the question of whether serendipitous discoveries can be nurtured and what role the computer could play in this process. (shrink)

El proceso educativo sufrió un drástico cambio debido a la pandemia que padecimos a nivel mundial, tuvimos que aprender a usar las herramientas tecnológicas en la enseñanza y en el aprendizaje. Por lo que siguiendo esta tendencia planteamos la utilización de la aplicación “Física M-Lab” en su primera versión para la enseñanza de la cinemática.Como estamos en el campo de las ciencias sociales, utilizamos el diseño cuasiexperimental que nos permitió concluir en que los aprendizajes mejoraron significativamente.

Various research groups with ongoing projects in the areas of personal data protection, reuse of public sector information and open data organised a seminar on October 29, 2020, on reuse and big data in the field of health in which researchers, managers and policymakers from different disciplines participated. Starting from the premise of the special importance that access to health data has as a resource for research, management and development of health products, treatments and interventions and, at the same time, (...) its consideration as a special category of data that is particularly sensitive, private and protected, this document seeks to systematise the main conclusions reached. We present a novel argumentation-based method for finding and analyzing communities in social media on the Web, where a community is regarded as a set of supported opinions that might be in conflict. Based on their stance, we identify argumentative coalitions to define them; then, we apply a similarity-based evaluation method over the set of arguments in the coalition to determine the level of cohesion inherent to each community, classifying them appropriately. Introducing conflict points and attacks between coalitions based on (...) argumentative (dis)similarities to model the interaction between communities leads to considering a meta-argumentation framework where the set of coalitions plays the role of the set of arguments and where the attack relation between the coalitions is assigned a particular strength which is inherited from the arguments belonging to the coalition. Various semantics are introduced to consider attacks’ strength to particularize the effect of the new perspective. Finally, we analyze a case study where all the elements of the formal construction of the formalism are exercised. (shrink)

Through the ethnographic record of the subsistence activities partially or completely performed in the domestic sphere in two Mbyá-Guaraní settlements in Misiones, we outline factors important in describing the local natural environment. Data was collected through systematic observation and also through semi-structured interviews. Analysis indicates that the natural environment of the area is characterized by the indigenous community in several different ways. Thus, local people view the environment as made up of different “micro-environments,” and they consequently think of the elements (...) that compose these “micro-environments” as having different, distinct characteristics. In the context of their daily activities, both these “micro-environments” and the elements that compose them are regarded as resources, in that they are viewed in terms of what is in them relevant to the subsistence of these groups in the rainforest. It is the intention of this study to initiate the systematic recording and processing of information on how these indigenous communities know and manage the natural resources available to them in their daily life. El presente artículo tiene el objetivo de reflexionar sobre los elementos que pueden constituir un modelo de crítica cultural feminista, pensado desde la intersección entre el campo de los estudios feministas y los estudios culturales críticos, con el ánimo de abonar a la discusión sobre el “giro cultural” del feminismo en Latinoamérica. Para ello, se visitan textos clásicos de los citados campos para dar un sentido histórico y epistemológico a la propuesta y se apuesta narrativa y políticamente por un ejercicio (...) de “fabulación”, en el cual se hace una metáfora de lo que significa “hacer trabajar la cultura”, desde posicionamientos feministas, por medio de la novela La historia sin fin (1979), de Michael Ende, argumentando que la defensa de Fantasía equivale a dotarnos de otros marcos de inteligibilidad, de otros paradigmas de pensamiento y acción, que aborden de frente la pregunta por el poder y se comprometan con proyectos de transformación social, en contextos específicos. La primera analiza la importancia que poseen las diversas declaraciones sobre derechos humanos entre sí y cómo han sido tomadas en cuenta en las legislaciones de los diversos países, en especial el caso de México.En la segunda parte, el autor analiza cómo es tratado el derecho a la vida y el estatuto personal del embrión humano en la Declaración Universal sobre Bioética y Derechos Humanos de la UNESCO.Por último, se muestra que la (...) ambigüedad que prevalece en el texto se reflejó en el Tribunal Europeo de Derechos Humanos. Este trabajo presenta los resultados del primer acercamiento de una investigación realizada a los diferentes agentes educativos de una escuela tridocente, ubicada en una comunidad Wixarika en el estado de Jalisco, México, se recuperan las expeiencias educativas durante el aislamiento social y obligatorio durante la pandemia. Se empleó la narrativa para comprender una realidad que es construida a través del relato.

Actualmente los avances biotecnológicos han superado los fines clásicos de la medicina. Se han producido cambios conceptuales importantes que han impactado en el constructo médico de la relación médico/paciente, como son: a) La diversidad del concepto de naturaleza humana; b) El concepto de corporeidad humana; c) El concepto subjetivo de autonomía; y, d) El valor de la calidad de vida. El análisis bioético de estos conceptos lleva a la comprensión de porqué la medicina actual podría encaminarse hacia una ‘medicina del (...) perfeccionamiento’ o ‘transhumanista’. La conclusión muestra que la medicina acepta la aplicación de los avances en la biotecnología bajo los postulados clásicos enfocados al campo de la salud y que es preciso emprender una profunda reflexión sobre la aplicación de los mismos, con la finalidad de aportar mejoras o nuevas funciones a sujetos sanos. El objetivo de este artículo es presentar los diferentes conceptos del Cosmismo ruso como una alternativa al vacío existencial que permea todo el Transhumanismo. Si tenemos en cuenta que el fenómeno original del Cosmismo ruso es una síntesis de enfoques científicos generales, científico-naturales y culturales para el estudio de la dimensión cosmoplanetaria del hombre, es posible ver en el movimiento del Transhumanismo, por el contrario, supone una amenaza para la humanidad que podría culminar en la realización de sus ideales y (...) sobrepasar todas las zonas de riesgo existentes: la utilización de la innovación tecnológica para el reemplazo gradual del cuerpo humano natural en un cyborg puede llegar a destruir la humanidad tal y como la conocemos. El artículo muestra que el Cosmismo ruso es fundamentalmente diferente del Transhumanismo por la presencia de una enseñanza ética según la cual las nuevas habilidades evolutivas deben tener como base la mejora espiritual y moral de la persona. Al reducir la conciencia humana a un medio electrónico, el Transhumanismo devalúa los valores de la cultura europea. Junto a los sueños audaces sobre las posibilidades evolutivas del hombre, el Cosmismo ruso contiene programas de investigación en los que demuestra que la materia viva de nuestro planeta ha sido generada por diversas radiaciones cósmicas. De ahí que su filosofía anteponga, ante la magnitud que puede llegar a alcanzar la búsqueda de la inmortalidad defendida por el Transhumanismo, el concepto de la naturaleza cósmica de la vida y el "corazón" como un centro psicofisiológico especial de una persona, y que son estos dos conceptos los que podrán contribuir a resolver el problema del estrecho contacto con las tecnologías de última generación. La bioética, ciencia de la vida, no puede quedar lejana a la transmisión de la misma. El concepto de procreación humana, del cual parten las acciones sobre las decisiones de maternidad/paternidad, es un campo propio de la bioética. Dentro de la ciencia de la reproducción humana se ha llevado a cabo numerosas técnicas en las últimas décadas, que repercuten en los hechos concretos del logro de embarazos, pero también, en forma muy importante inciden en el simbolismo y en el significado (...) del mismo concepto de procreación. La bioética debe resguardar los valores propios del ejercicio de la medicina y de la antropología filosófica que sustenta los actos aplicados al hombre.El siguiente trabajo pretende una reflexión bioética, esto es, multidisciplinaria, sobre las actuales técnicas de reproducción aplicadas al hombre. La medicina del mejoramiento reta los fines tradicionales del acto médico basado en la terapéutica, y se acerca al pensamiento transhumanista. Actualmente se practican, con aval científico, diversas modalidades de medicina del mejoramiento, pero deben ser reflexionados sus extremos en sujetos sanos, a través del enhancement, a fin de no perder el sentido propio de la medicina y el cuidado de la beneficencia del paciente.

La medicina del mejoramiento, un paso cercano al transhumanismo, se ha posicionado en nuestra sociedad. El transhumanismo pretende utilizar la ciencia y la tecnología para llevar al ser humano más allá de las limitaciones de su forma natural, con la intención de posteriormente pasar al posthumanismo, la creación de una nueva especie. Los últimos avances científicos, especialmente en el campo genético, pueden posibilitar estas opciones. Las innovaciones electromecánicas, como la miniaturización de los componentes y la mejora de los materiales biocompatibles, (...) han propiciado avances en las interfaces cerebro-máquina que potencian una dimensión cibernética, en la que los dispositivos mecánicos estarían bajo el control directo de la mente. El campo de las Ciencias de la Salud, es especialmente fructífero para la aplicación de estas tecnologías, propiciando en el ser humano mejoras, que pueden ser aplicadas a la medicina del mejoramiento y al transhumanismo. Esta reflexión ofrece una visión de los más importantes de estos avances recientes, con especial énfasis en la edición del genoma. No se considerarán en esta reflexión específicamente temas de posthumanismo. (shrink)

Danto begins his philosophy of the history of art with the problematic issue that characterizes modernism: a work of art becomes indiscernible from a mere thing insofar as it is the logical result of the narrative of a certain period. To speak of the end of art is to speak of the reasons that support such narrative and the possibility of its culmination. The article proposes a critique on the basis of the relation among essentialism, historicism, and pluralism, in order to examine Danto's controversial thesis regarding the historical end of art due to the exhaustion of its cognitive impulse.
