The article presents one of the components of the intellectual legacy of Polish positivism, a philosophical position which proposed a new attitude towards ethical issues. Its representatives put forward the notion of scientific ethics, reducing moral philosophy to it. They strongly emphasized their critical attitude towards traditional ethics, for which there was no place in the positivist model of science, and proposed a distinction between theoretical and practical ethics. Their project was motivated by an ambition to make ethics into jurisprudence, (...) a discipline whose accuracy would make it similar to other sciences. Their efforts were consistently motivated by the idea of making ethics into an empirical and applied science. This scientific ethics would fulfill the important task of forming a set of moral requirements, which, by referring to moral knowledge (“ethology”), would have a chance of influencing the conduct of individuals and society. The new ethics was expected to contribute to the change in social morality and thus greatly support moral progress, an issue which was hotly debated. All positivists subscribed to the idea of progress, including that of morality; however, some differences can be discerned in how they defined progress. Some defined it in realistic categories, while others focused on optimistic visions of the future. Among the first advocates of scientific ethics and of the idea of moral progress, differences notwithstanding, were Aleksander Świętochowski, Julian Ochorowicz, Feliks Bogacki, Władysław Kozłowski, and Bolesław Prus. A fully quantum-mechanical description of the spontaneous emission from an excited two-level atom placed in front of a two-slit interferometer is given. Global modes of the electromagnetic field in a two slit system are derived within the Kirchhoff-Huygens diffraction approximation, serving as a base for the field quantization. The standard Fermi's golden rule, supplemented by a factor coming from the nontrivial mode structure caused by the presence of the two-slit interferometer, is used to show that interference results from the position-dependent (...) coupling between the atom and different field modes of the system. Sixty years that have passed since the Warsaw Uprising are meaningful on the life scale of human generations. The Uprising, planned for 2 or 3 days, lasted in fact for 63 days. That fact astounded the military experts and was even noticed by the German high command, which has to be mainly ascribed to the exceptional tension of patriotism of the soldiers and the population.The Germans suffered especially great losses on the average around 1,900 weekly, almost twice as many as (...) during the highest intensity of fighting in 1944/45. On our side the losses were estimated at 18,000 dead and about 6,500–7,000 wounded insurgents. However, the Warsaw Uprising and the whole nation counted around 150,000 dead among the civilians.During the two months of the uprising 25% of the pre-war buildings in Warsaw were destroyed, mainly due to the barbarian practice of burning the whole streets. Against the conditions of the capitulation agreement just signed, the majority of historical monuments were burned down.In Warsaw, the tradition of sacrifices and solidarity in action, bravery and the deep attachment to liberty, manifested in September 1939, was alive and brought results all the time of war through the acts of the patriotic resistance organizations. The leaders of the Warsaw Uprising belonged to the resistance fighters before World War I and during it. The battle for independence was their curriculum vitae, and the majority of the uprising participants, the youth, was educated in the independent Polish Republic, in respect for patriotic traditions of independence fights and insurrections.Jerzy Kirchmajer believes that the Warsaw Uprising was an error, as it did not suit the Soviets; Jan Ciechanowski from London—that it was against the plans of the British ally. It is said sometimes that the Uprising started without calculating the possibility of a helping hand.Faith played a major role during the Uprising. There are three main kinds of causal connections between two events: the transfer of energy, the transfer of information and the triggering of the transfer of one of them or both. There are also other kinds of causal connections.

In this article, on the basis of questionnaire data collected for other purposes, the Authors want to show the consequences of various methods of shortening of tests and what may result from such an action for diagnosticians, researchers and examined individuals. The research aim of the work is to show the best method of shortening of the scale of questionnaires. Will shortening of a questionnaire according to different statistical techniques bring the same results? Will the quality of shortened scales be (...) comparable? Is any of statistical techniques better for shortening of the scale of a questionnaire? The obtained results suggest a poorly controlable effect of the methods of questionnaire shortening. Moreover creating a short version on the basis of the results collected with the use of the full version leads to obtaining a tool with unknown diagnostic and psychometric properties. (shrink)

Resource loss, coping, alcohol expectancies and drinking in students The aim of the study was to find relationships between resource loss treated as a stress indicator, coping, alcohol expectancies and drinking in college students. Results of a group of 125 first and second year students showed that there was a strong relationship between alcohol consumption and expectancies connected with alcohol. Some coping forms were also related to drinking but no relationship was found for resource loss.

We discuss circumscription, a logical formalization of non-monotonic reasoning, introduced by John McCarthy and Vladimir Lifschitz. First section contains presentation of assumptions of logic-based artificial intelligence, problem of non-monotonicity in commonsense reasoning and informal formulation of circumscription. In section two, a formal definition of circumscription is given. The idea of circumscription is discussed from syntactic and semantic point of view. Theoretical investigations are supplemented with examples. In section three, methods of computing circumscription are discussed. Section four contains exemplary circumscription-based formalization (...) of simple non-monotonic reasoning. Finally, not only a comment about the role of logic in artificial intelligence is made but a piece of information about implementation of circumscription is given as well. (shrink)

Wskażmy na początku trzy zasadnicze powody, które zainspirowały toruńskie środowisko filozoficzne do organizacji na Uniwersytecie Mikołaja Kopernika w Toruniu spotkania znawców i badaczy spuścizny twórczej Henryka Elzenberga. Pierwszy to wzgląd o charakterze rocznicowym. Mijająca w tym roku 120 rocznica urodzin i 40 rocznica śmierci Elzenberga jest właściwą chwilą stwarzającą najlepszą sposobność uczczenia pamięci wybitnego polskiego filozofa i humanisty, przywołania i podkreślenia jego dokonań w zakresie filozofii, aksjologii, etyki, estetyki, filozofii kultury i literatury. Drugi - jeśli tak rzec można - ma (...) charakter lokalny. Wiele lat dojrzałego życia i znaczna część biografii twórczej Elzenberga przypada na toruński okres jego działalności. Obok Tadeusza Czeżowskiego tworzył w Uniwersytecie Mikołaja Kopernika środowisko filozoficzne, w wydatnym stopniu kształtując jego oblicze duchowe i intelektualną kulturę. Wykłady i seminaria prowadzone w murach uczelni oraz tzw. privatissima odbywające się w domu Profesora cieszyły się niesłabnącym powodzeniem nie tylko u adeptów filozofii, ale także osób różnych zainteresowań i profesji naukowych. Mogli oni podziwiać rozległość wykształcenia i zainteresowań Profesora, jego niezwykle bogatą osobowość i finezyjną kulturę intelektualną. Szacunek budziła dociekliwość badawcza filozofa głęboko penetrująca podejmowane tematy, a szczególnie umiejętność pobudzania do twórczego myślenia i wspólnego dochodzenia do prawdy. Toruński okres w życiu Elzenberga był także - jak można to chyba bez przesady powiedzieć - zwieńczeniem drogi jego intelektualnego rozwoju i aktywności twórczej. Wszystko to stawia przed kolejnym pokoleniem filozofów związanych z toruńską uczelnią zaszczytne zobowiązania i powinności wobec osoby i dorobku Profesora. Trzeci powód jest bardziej ogólnej natury.Dzieło filozofa niewątpliwie należy do najznakomitszych osiągnięć polskiej humanistyki i powinno, naszym zdaniem, znaleźć bardziej poczesne miejsce w świadomości ludzi wykształconych, wyraźniej zaistnieć w rodzimym życiu intelektualnym. Mimo wzrastającego zainteresowania twórczością Elzenberga, istnieje w dalszym ciągu dysproporcja pomiędzy znaczeniem jego dokonań na polu aksjologii,etyki filozofii kultury, krytyki literackiej i literatury a miejscem,jakie zajmuje ona w pamięci i świadomości zbiorowej. Dlatego należy podejmować takie inicjatywy, aby najbardziej wartościowe tradycje rodzimej kultury intelektualnej nie stawały się jedynie pomnikami przeszłości, ale stanowiły przede wszystkim żywy składnik współczesnej kultury Dotychczasowe spotkania konferencyjne charakteryzowała wieloaspektowość podejścia do spuścizny filozofa. Jej badacze, dzieląc się wynikami swoich dociekań,przedstawili dowolnie wybrane tematy, koncentrując się na ich opisywaniu, wyjaśnianiu czy interpretowaniu. Wybór tematyki uzależniony był od kierunku zainteresowań i predylekcji badacza.Zaprezentowano mniej lub bardziej bogaty zestaw problemów odnoszących się do różnych aspektów myśli twórczej filozofa.Otrzymywaliśmy w efekcie analizy wybranych zagadnień z bardzo bogatego obszaru zainteresowań filozofa, począwszy od teorii wartości poprzez tematy etyczne, estetyczne, historyczno filozoficzne, aż po te z zakresu filozofii kultury, literatury, krytyki literackiej, religii i mistyki. Podejmowano także wiele innych bardziej szczegółowych i drobniejszych kwestii odnajdywanych w pismach filozofa, a zwłaszcza tych inspirowanych, imponującą bogactwem tematycznym, refleksją zobiektywizowaną na kartach Kłopotu z istnieniem.Przykładem takie wieloaspektowego odniesienia się do myśli twórczej autora Kłopotu z istnieniem była konferencja zorganizowana przez toruńskie środowisko filozoficzne w 1997 roku pod tytułem Henryk Elzenberg. Dziedzictwo idei. Filozofia - aksjologia - kultura.Tytuł bez wątpienia sugeruje, że intencją organizatorów było zakreślenie w miarę pełnej panoramy zagadnień podejmowanych przez filozofa wraz z ich analizą. (shrink)
