In this article we present the first edition of five Hieroglyphic Luwian inscriptions of Ancoz and Samsat provenance from the Adıyaman Museum, provide clarification on the records of previously published inscriptions from Ancoz and Samsat, suggest a join with an existing Ancoz inscription, and offer a discussion on the nature of the rulers of Kummuh.

This book argues that tradition is not dissociable from processes of self-consciousness involving our capacity to situate ourselves in a world that includes a rich legacy of predecessors and precedents. It explores how language, the body, experience, imagination, desire, and affect are not dissociable from tradition as transference in the Freudian sense. This argument draws support from several major thinkers and offers new interpretations of them.

Die Hieroglyphen waren im 18. Jh. eine Herausforderung für die Aufklärung und zugleich ein willkommener Gegenstand für die Esoterik. Sie galten als rätselhafte Reste einer vorzeitigen, unbekannt gewordenen Kommunikation zwischen Bilderschrift, Gestensprache und Symbolik und erlangten eine Schlüsselstellung in der Sprach- und Schrifttheorie, der Kulturanthropologie, der Theologie und der Theosophie, aber auch in Physiognomik und Kunsttheorie.

In his Res Gestae, the historian Ammianus Marcellinus describes the Egyptian city of Thebes and the obelisks that can be found there. There is an unusual passage in which he describes hieroglyphic writings. He goes on to show, through two examples, how hieroglyphs might seem bizarre, but in fact contain their own logic which can be explained : non enim ut nunc litterarum numerus praestitutus et facilis exprimit quicquid humana mens concipere potest, ita prisci quoque scriptitarunt Aegyptii, sed singulae (...) litterae singulis nominibus seruiebant et uerbis; non numquam significabant integros sensus. cuius rei scientiam his inseram duobus exemplis. per uulturem naturae uocabulum pandunt, quia mares nullos posse inter has alites inueniri rationes memorant physicae, perque speciem apis mella conficientis indicant regem moderatori cum iucunditate aculeos quoque innasci debere his signis ostendentes. et similia plurima.For the ancient Egyptians did not write as nowadays, when a prescribed and easy series of letters expresses whatever the human mind can imagine; but individual characters served as individual nouns and verbs; and sometimes they signified whole ideas. I will show the knowledge of this with these two examples. They represent the word for ‘nature’ by a vulture, because no males can be found among these birds, as natural history records; and by the figure of the bee making honey they indicate ‘a king’, showing by these signs that in a ruler stings also ought to arise from sweetness. Im Zentrum der Reihe Staatsverständnisse steht die Frage: Was lässt sich den Ideen früherer und heutiger Staatsdenker für ein zeitgemäßes Verständnis des Staates entnehmen? Hegel nennt den Staat eine Hieroglyphe der Vernunft, um seine widerständige Entschlüsselung als Institution verwirklichter Freiheit zu versinnbildlichen. Die Schritte und Facetten dieser teils zeitgebundenen, teils an übergreifenden Prinzipien orientierten Denkbewegung kritisch nachzuvollziehen, öffnet Einsichten in eine sozialphilosophische Grundkonzeption von Staat und Gesellschaft mit anhaltender Wirkung im politiktheoretischen wie staatsrechtlichen Diskurs.

In “Mama’s Baby, Papa’s Maybe: An American Grammar Book,” Hortense Spillers draws a parallel between the discursive and material field of violence that assisted in the production of the captive body. She asks: “We might well ask if this phenomenon of marking and branding actually ‘transfers’ from one generation to another, finding its various symbolic substitutions in an efficacy of meanings that repeat the initiating moments?” In response to her inquiry, this paper presents a theory of “transfer” of hieroglyphics from (...) one generation to another through a semiological reading of language and myth. This theory of “transfer” will ultimately argue that because language must be iterable, and thus communicable in different contexts, black time is structured by both continuity and severe disjunctures that perform a series of symbolic substitutions for use outside of their initiating moments. Premier thème : la poésie ne relève pas des oppositions traditionnelles de la pensée et de l'expression, de la signification et de l'émotion, ou encore de la clarté syntaxique et du nombre rhétorique – de tous ces couples qui font la matière de la pensée dualiste. The Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic script contains data that shed light on 3 major issues central to current metaphor studies: (a) Where is metaphor, that is, is metaphor linguistic or conceptual? (b) If metaphor is indeed conceptual, does metaphor understanding entail creation of an ad hoc category in which the vehicle is a particularly good exemplar? (c) Is metaphor processing primarily dependent on the identification and activation of the underlying "deep structure" conceptual metaphor? The script includes an elaborate system of classifiers (...) that constitute an intensely motivated, highly constrained categorization system strictly referring to conceptual, nonlinguistic configurations. The Egyptian system is a prototype-centered classification system, from which metaphor clearly emerges as a form of alternative classification. (shrink)
