Quand il s'agit de la Compagnie de Jésus, ces textes ne sont pas seulement ceux du fondateur, mais l'ensemble des documents qui ont présidé à la naissance et aux premiers jours de la Compagnie. Or, lorsqu'il s'agit de la Compagnie de jésus, disons des Jésuites pour parler plus couramment, le fondateur, Ignace de Loyola, n'est pas seul en cause, si exceptionnel et (...) donc unique qu' ait été son rôle aux temps des origines.« Les origines » : ce pluriel convient assez bien à l'ordre des Jésuites, car cet ordre n'a pas été l'oeuvre d'un seul. En ce sens, la Compagnie, tant par son premier maître que par ses premiers compagnons, est « l'unité plurielle » d'une fondation. C'est par ce trait d'origine que la fondation de la Compagnie affirme sa différence à l'égard des autres « religions » ou ordres. Ignace a été, de manière essentielle, lié à ses collègues et compa­gnons, et ceux-ci à Ignace, par un double rapport réciproque, d'amitié d'abord, de dépendance ensuite. Si bien que le fondateur n'est fondateur qu'en étant co-fondateur, et que les co-fondateurs, à leur tour, n'ont été co-fondateurs qu'en étant fondateurs de plein droit.Documents are said to be « founding » when, in a given society, they ensure the structure and spirit of this society. Stanislas Breton's _A Radical Philosophy of Saint Paul_, which focuses on the political implications of the apostle's writings, was an instrumental text in Continental philosophy's contemporary "turn to religion." Reading Paul's work against modern thought and history, Breton helped launch a reassessment of Marxism, introduce secular interpretations of biblical and theological traditions, develop "radical negativity" as a critical category, and rework modern political ideas through a theoretical lens. Newly translated and critically situated, this edition takes a fresh approach (...) to Breton's classic work, reacquainting readers with the remarkable ways in which an ancient apostle can reset our understanding of the political. Breton begins with Paul's biography and the texts of his conversion, which challenge common conceptions of identity. He broaches the question of allegory and divine predestination, introduces the idea of subjectivity as an effect of power, and confronts Paul's critique of Law, which leads to an exploration of the logics and limits of agency and power. Breton develops these and other insights in relation to Paul's subversive reflections on the crucified messiah, which challenge meaning and reason and upend our current world order. Neither a coherent theologian nor a stable humanist, Breton's Paul becomes a fascinating figure of excess and madness, experiencing a kind of being that transcends philosophy, secularity, and religion. In the context of [Formula: see text], we analyze a version of Hindman’s finite unions theorem on infinite sets, which normally requires the Axiom of Choice to be proved. We establish the implication relations between this statement and various classical weak choice principles, thus precisely locating the strength of the statement as a weak form of the [Formula: see text].

Studies linking religion to CSR have produced conflicting findings due to a failure to draw distinctions among religious influences and different CSR practices, and to theorize their connection. Drawing on social identity theory and the theory of planned behavior, we first argue that religion will influence CSR when ethical values from a CEO’s religious social identification resonate with an aspect of CSR. Second, CEO attitudes congruent with those values and forms of CSR—interpersonal empathy and proactiveness—will strengthen that relationship. Third, the (...) relationship between religious social identification and CSR will be strengthened by a CEO’s ability to enact CSR policies, a function of personal and firm market power. Our research on 270 CEOs from 242 publicly traded US firms from 2007 to 2020 supports these relationships. (shrink)

Although the effectiveness of some tobacco programs and policies has been clearly demonstrated in reducing the overall population smoking prevalence, the health benefits are not equally distributed across all socio-economic classes; a situation that clearly runs against the equalitarian ethos of most modern states. In this article, we evaluate the benefits of using Sen’s Capability Approach as a theory of social justice to guide public health program and policy development in a way that would prevent the further increase of inequalities (...) in health outcomes. Starting from four consensual goals of tobacco control practice (i.e. that individuals live a smoke-free life, that smokers quit smoking, that non-smokers are protected from exposure to second-hand smoke and that smoking cessation support is accessible) we found that besides the standard interventions (e.g. education on the harms of smoking, policies to reduce exposure to SHS) an iniquity-proof tobacco control program needs also to address the lack of options of underprivileged people in affordable smoke-free settings and in leisure activities. We conclude that an ethical tobacco prevention program needs to address the broader social determinants of health such as the socio-economic policies that put a strain on people’s capacity to shun or quit smoking. The face embodies for the individual the sense of identity, that is to say, precisely the place where someone recognizes himself and where others recognize him. From the outset the face is meaning, translating in a living and enigmatic form the absoluteness yet minuteness of individual difference. Any alteration to the face puts at stake the sense of identity. Disfigurement destroys the sense of identity of an individual who can no longer recognize himself or be recognized by others. Disfigurement places (...) a mask on the face. The goal of a facial transplant consists of restoring an individual’s place in the world and reviving his taste for life, returning to him his ‘human shape’. Facial transplants raise essential anthropological questions such as ‘Who am I?’ and ‘To whom belongs this face that henceforth is mine?’. (shrink)

For Ivan Illich, a twentieth-century critical thinker driven by deep faith, sin is a denial of the dignity of another who calls out to me, and a betrayal my own vocation to respond, which were revealed by the Incarnation and the Gospel. Illich thus holds that the criminalization of sin, that is to say, its transformation into a violation of Church law through the imposition of compulsory confession in the thirteenth century, is a perversion of what has been opened by (...) the Gospel. Risk is most often associated with danger and perceived as a harmful aspect of life, as an insidious and unwelcome threat that should be avoided. Risk-taking, however, is sometimes a singular passion, a source of pleasure that becomes a way of life. When freely pursued as a valorised activity, it can be a path to self-fulfilment, an opportunity to confront new situations, and a means for redefining one’s self, testing personal abilities, increasing self-esteem or gaining recognition. Deliberate risk-taking is a (...) form of character building. It accommodates life’s intensities. It is extremely popular in high-risk physical activities and sports and postmodern forms of adventure. (shrink)

Liée à la neutralisation de la portée morale des religions théistes et surnaturelles sur le plan métaphysique, en cohérence avec l’engagement pour une éducation nationale séculière, la dimension religieuse de l’utilitarisme éloigne aussi Mill de Bentham. Risk-taking behaviours often reflect ambivalent ways of calling for the help of one’s close friends and family – those who count. It is an ultimate means of finding meaning and a system of values; and it is a sign of the adolescent’s active resistance and his attempts to find his place in the world again. It contrasts with the far more insidious risk of depression and the radical collapse of meaning. In spite of the suffering it engenders, risk-taking nevertheless has (...) a positive side, fostering independence in adolescents and a search for reference points, it leads to a better self-image and is a means of developing one’s identity. It is nonetheless painful in terms of its possible repercussions: injuries, death or addiction. But let us not forget that the suffering is upstream, perpetuated by a complex relation between a society, a family structure and a life history. Paradoxically, for some young people who are suffering, the risk is rather that they will remain immured in their world-weariness, with a potentially radical outcome (i.e. suicide). The turbulence caused by risk-taking behaviours illustrates a determination to be rid of one’s suffering and to fight on so that life can, at last, be lived. (shrink)

La pierre que le maître genevois a lancée dans le lac des Cygnes, a provoqué un ébranlement salutaire qui remet en question, non seulement un mode contemporain de philosophic mais la philosophic elle même. Substance et modes sont à nouveau soumis à cette interrogation salutaire qui, périodiquement, confronte la philosophie au problème crucial de sa propre possibilityé. À ce (...) titre, même s'il dût être le seul, ce petit livre mériterait la reconnaissance des intéressés. (shrink)

Dans cet important ouvrage, S. Breton cherche à dégager le concept d'idéologie. Puis il fait la typologie des formes majeures d'idéologies (celles qui au cours de l'histoire ont eu l'impact le plus décisif), en analysant les facteurs qui les composent et les définissent, ce qui lui permet d'affronter la question de la détermination en dernière instance des idéologies. Les derniers chapitres sont consacrés à déterminer les rapports des idéologies à la religion et à la foi chrétienne, ainsi qu'au savoir (...) et à la philosophie. Enfin, l'auteur s'interroge sur la crise actuelle des idéologies et sur la signification de cette crise. Pas toujours facile à suivre, cette réflexion contribue à mettre de la clarté dans des débats trop souvent confus. (shrink)

Cet essai est un retour aussi réfléchi que possible sur l'ensemble de mes écrits de philosophie. S'étalant sur une durée approximative de cinquante-cinq ans, ils sont à la fois nombreux et, du fait de leur nombre, menacés par la dispersion. Je suis bien conscient de l'objection possible ainsi que de la demande, toujours plus réitérée depuis 1990, d'une quasi-synthèse, de la part de lecteurs qui, à diverses reprises, m'ont fait part de leur sympathie et de leur encouragement. Je me suis (...) promis de les satisfaire par un bref écrit qui serait, à ma façon, et sans égaler le modèle qui de loin m'inspire, une quasi-monadologie. J'ai le sentiment, dans ce retour sur mon passé, de devoir beaucoup à ceux qui, au cours de mon cheminement, m'ont aidé dans ce long travail de pensée. "Qui domine la littérature mondiale?" demandait Strindberg. "Péladan, Gorki, Maeterlink, Kipling" répondait-il. De ces noms, seul celui de Péladan n'évoque plus un livre précis pour nos contemporains. Certains se souviennent d'un auteur de la fin du siècle dernier qui s'était rendu célèbre par ses extravagances vestimentaires : son pourpoint Renaissance et sa barbe à l'assyrienne dans le Paris de la Belle Epoque défrayait la chronique. Les journalistes ont aussi consacré une large place à ses démêlés avec d'autres occultistes. Ses salons (...) de la Rose-Croix, pour lesquels Satie composa des sonneries, eurent une grande renommée et sont importants pour qui s'intéresse à l'histoire de l'art. Péladan, avec un sens certain de la publicité, s'était proclamé S.A.R., titre assyrien qui en faisait un descendant mythique des Mages chaldéens. C'est ce titre qui a assuré sa notoriété jusqu'à nos jours. D'androgynes pervers en femmes violées, mêlant la magie aux thèmes décadents, ses romans présentent un tableau étonnant de la pensée fin de siècle. Ce texte veut démontrer que Joséphin Péladan, qui eut des admirateurs comme Jarry ou Paul Valéry, n'était pas qu'un dandy excentrique, un farfelu 1900 teinté d'ésotérisme mais un authentique écrivain. Il existe un récit de Borgès qui raconte l'histoire d'un peintre qui voulut faire un tableau de l'univers. Au bout de nombreuses années de travail, il avait peint un mur entier de personnages pour s'apercevoir qu'en fait il n'avait peint que son propre visage. Ce fut précisément la destinée de Péladan : l'auteur ne fit plus qu'un avec son personnage principal du Mage. Jamais son œuvre n'aura présenté une telle fusion entre imaginaire et réalité. (shrink)

In accord with the motto of the Passionists—“We preach Christ crucified”—Breton located the essence of Christianity in a faith and love marked by open-ended questioning and dialogue and by an exodic movement of the spirit. Neoplatonism enabled him to raise his love of free inquiry to a high spiritual plane, and to bring into lucid focus the figure of Christ, ridding it of false absolutizations. Seeing the encounter with Buddhism as the next step in this purification of Christian vision, (...) he pored over Nagarjuna in his last days. The totality of Breton’s life and work enacts a lighter, humbler understanding of the Gospel, one fully responsive to modern and postmodern questions. (shrink)

In the aftermath of the debate between Derrida and Levinas on Hebraism and Hellenism, Christian thought that retains a place for philosophy is often regarded as “Graeco‐Christian”, a monolithic system with an unfortunate history. The work of the French philosopher Stansilas Breton suggests that the reality is more complex. In Le Verbe et la croix , he examines the function of the term logos staurou in Paul, arguing that this untranslatable term stands as a question mark in a world (...) of language that could only speak “Jew” or “Greek”. Far from being a sign of Christian superiority, the cross signals an imperative for dispossession intrinsic to Christian language. In its “nothingness” the cross functions as a principle of critique that makes innovation and engagement possible. Thus while the cross involves negation it moves beyond negative theology. Drawing upon neoplatonist philosophy, Breton delineates the way in which the cross makes possible “the writing of the self in the world”. This paper draws upon Breton's understanding of the function of the cross to argue that the heritage of Athens endures and must be re‐thought, always recognizing the limits of all human language. After examining Breton's understanding of the logos staurou, it relates this notion to his broader understanding of revelation as “writing”. Finally it shows how Breton appeals to neoplatonist meonotology to speak in more universal terms of the need for a principle of dispossession at the heart of all religious language. For Christians the cross is this principle, enabling human beings to be causes of themselves who engender new being. (shrink)

In the midst of the ongoing debate over the uniqueness of Christ and of Christianity, Stanislas Breton’s work Unicité et monothéisme offers new categories of reflection which may come to bridge the fundamental theological differences between pluralist and inclusivist perspectives. While his notions of méontology and of the Cross as the symbol of self-effacement create a radical openness to the distinctive truth of other religious traditions, this openness is itself firmly grounded within Christian self-understanding. Breton also reminds us (...) that the ultimate Christian basis for salvation lies not so much in assent to particular doctrines, but in the act of total self-givenness to others, in particular to “the least of these my brethren” (Matt. 25). The name Stanislas Breton likely drums up a few interesting facts: chum of Louis Althusser or Michel de Certeau, author of an obscure spiritual classic or bewildering treatises on Nothing, the Imaginary, and the “poetics of the sensible” – an idiosyncratic figure at the margins, writing on St. Paul or Proclus well before it was mainstream. Coming across his name can be like discovering a great record that none of your friends are talking about or taking a chance on (...) Netflix to find an arthouse ‘hidden gem’. To facilitate that experience, I offer a brief introductory essay sounding some of the major notes in his thought and life, followed by a translation of his “Examen particulier,” written in 1988 as a late-stage critical self-interrogation. The reader should find here that Breton’s oeuvre develops a coherent and penetrating philosophy of conceptual rigor and thematic range that is as deeply indebted to its modern engagements as it is to its medieval and late antique sources of inspiration. La trame de son interrogation est fournie par l’étude minutieuse de cinq conflits qui s’échelonnent entre 1966 (les Forges d’Hennebont) et 1980-1981 (la lutte contre l’installation d’une centrale nucléaire à Plogoff). L’objectif de cet article est de montrer qu’à la fin du xiii e siècle un tournant s’est opéré dans la compréhension de la nature du syllogisme sophistique, allant d’une définition axée sur ses caractéristiques formelles vers une définition tenant compte de ses caractéristiques pragmatiques. La première position est celle de Simon de Faversham, développée vers 1280 et probablement durant son séjour à la Faculté des arts de Paris. La seconde position est celle de Raoul le Breton, dernier des plus (...) grands maîtres ès arts parisien. C’est dans leurs réponses respectives que se révèle leur désaccord sur la manière de concevoir le syllogisme sophistique. (shrink)

Le present travail propose une analyse philosophique de l'esthetique d'Andre Breton. ;Meme si, en raison de l'importance du surrealisme au XXeme Siecle, cette doctrine semble bien incontournable pour quiconque s'interesse a l'esthetique, elle n'a guere fait, a ce jour, l'objet d'une veritable reflexion philosophique. Notre travail repose donc d'abord sur l'hypothese que l'oeuvre de Breton presente un interet du point de vue philosophique, hypothese qui est etablie en introduction. Faisant ensuite etat des difficultes que rencontre tout examen philosophique (...) du surrealisme, nous precisons le sujet que nous avons retenu compte tenu de ces difficultes: il s'agit de la question de l'art comme manifestation sociale et donc des deux problemes suivants: celui de l'autonomie de l'art, d'une part; celui de l'engagement de l'artiste, d'autre part. ;La suite de notre travail est consacree a une lecture interne des textes de Breton qui permet de cerner le point de vue surrealiste sur ces deux problemes, cette demarche etant menee selon l'approche diachronique que nous avons retenue. Nous sommes parvenus a etablir que Breton croit d'une part en l'autonomie du probleme artistique et d'autre part que l'art authentique est, par la seule vertu de cette authenticite, revolutionnaire et engage. Les corollaires de ces idees sont qu'aucun artiste ne saurait, au risque de nier la signification et la portee de sa demarche propre, ignorer, dans sa discipline, l'etat donne du probleme artistique; que rien ni personne ne saurait dicter a l'art la nature ou la fonction de sa demarche; enfin, que c'est l'art authentique qui fait l'art revolutionnaire et non pas l'art revolutionnaire qui fait l'art authentique. ;Au total, l'oeuvre de Breton promeut une conception revolutionnaire de l'art dont nous avons cherche a degager l'essentiel du point de vue philosophique--option metaphysique moniste d'un univers cryptogrammatique, surrationalisme, surdetermination de l'esthetique par l'ethique--et qui font de son oeuvre une des plus passionnees et des plus convaincantes defense et illustration de l'art au XXeme Siecle. At Pech Merle in 1952, André Breton provoked a controversial incident by damaging a Palaeolithic wall painting that he suspected to be a fake. This episode provides an insight into the contested status of prehistoric sites in post-war France and the theoretical and ideological implications of their cultural mobilization. Such sites allowed for a disavowal of wartime trauma and supported the reaffirmation of French national identity and its civilizing mission by locating the birthplace of human culture on French soil. (...) Yet their extreme age also threw into relief the relative fragility of the recently invented nation-state. Breton's vandalism cast doubt on the models of cultural progress and pre-eminence that sought to instrumentalize prehistoric art but failed to appreciate the subversiveness of its ‘deep’ history. Ironically, however, Breton's scepticism ultimately enhanced the subversive dimension of archaeology by allowing it to demonstrate the authenticity and age of cave art. (shrink)
