Resurrecting ancient animal genomes: The extinct moa and more.Leon Huynen, Craig D. Millar & David M. Lambert - 2012 - Bioessays 34 (8):661-669.
Recently two developments have had a major impact on the field of ancient DNA (aDNA). First, new advances in DNA sequencing, in combination with improved capture/enrichment methods, have resulted in the recovery of orders of magnitude more DNA sequence data from ancient animals. Second, there has been an increase in the range of tissue types employed in aDNA. Hair in particular has proven to be very successful as a source of DNA because of its low levels of contamination and high (...)

Geography and Moral Education in a Super complex World: the Significance of Values Education and Some Remaining Dilemmas.David Lambert - 1999 - Ethics, Place and Environment 2 (1):5-18.
This paper argues that geography has a prominent, though at present underdeveloped, role to play in the moral education of young people. The need for geography teachers at all levels to engage students effectively with matters, themes and issues associated with ‘supercomplex’ environmental processes of various kinds, in a global context, requires the application of morally careful teaching. This is the case with respect to both the way selected content is handled in the classroom and the curriculum context in which (...)

L’actualité de la pensée politique de Jacques Maritain cinquante ans après sa mort.Andreas Gonçalves Lind & Dominique Lambert - 2023 - Revista Portuguesa de Filosofia 79 (1-2):509-530.
The commemoration of the 700th anniversary of the canonization of Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) as well as the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Jacques Maritain (1882-1973) present an opportunity to re-examine the neo-Thomism of the contemporary French philosopher. Our aim here will be to set out the philosophical argument from which Maritain establishes an inseparable link between human rights (i.e., the dignity of the human person) and natural law. We will thus seek to expose how Maritain supports democracy from the (...)

The intuitive way of knowing: a tribute to Brian Goodwin.Brian C. Goodwin, David Lambert, Chris Chetland & Craig Millar (eds.) - 2013 - Edinburgh: Floris Books.
Professor Brian Goodwin (1931-2007) was a visionary biologist, mathematician and philosopher. Understanding organisms as dynamics wholes, he worked to develop an alternate view to extreme Darwinism based solely on genetic factors. He was a pioneer in the field of theoretical biology.

The Place of Justification in the Fabric of Testimonial Knowledge.Isabelle Keßels, David Lambert & Christian Quast - 2018 - In Johannes Müller-Salo (ed.), Robert Audi: Critical Engagements. Cham: Springer Verlag. pp. 71-97.
Within this paper, we argue that Audi’s transmission principle for testimony-based knowledge is untenable, while proposing an alternative route for him to take. We will first set out the core tenets of Audi’s general epistemology before we examine his account of testimony more specifically. Then, we proceed by showing that Audi’s transmission principle for testimony-based knowledge falls prey to a number of prominent counterexamples discussed in the recent literature. In reaction to this, we will put forward the thesis that in (...)

Changing land-use patterns and amenity-driven migration have brought agriculture back into people’s lives, but there is a disconnection between the realities of production agriculture and romantic images attached to farming. To the extent that “rurality” is attached to farming, people may desire to live in rural places, but they may be unprepared for the realities of living near a working farm. Greater numbers of communities are facing “either/or” outcomes regarding the conversion of “open space” land to residential or commercial uses (...)

    Le déterminisme du hasard.Dominique Lambert - 2005 - Laval Théologique et Philosophique 61 (3):515-525.
Instead of a concept of chance impossible to define, could we not risk the idea that there are rather a variety of determinisms, the latter being more or less flexible, that is to say presenting more or less constraints, or regularities. The concept of chance would then be purely relative, in the sense that there would be no absolute notion of chance but a plurality of meanings of the concept of “determinism”.

    Relativized Adjacency.Dakotah Lambert - 2023 - Journal of Logic, Language and Information 32 (4):707-731.
For each class in the piecewise-local subregular hierarchy, a relativized (tier-based) variant is defined. Algebraic as well as automata-, language-, and model-theoretic characterizations are provided for each of these relativized classes, except in cases where this is provably impossible. These various characterizations are necessarily intertwined due to the well-studied logic-automaton connection and the relationship between finite-state automata and (syntactic) semigroups. Closure properties of each class are demonstrated by using automata-theoretic methods to provide constructive proofs for the closures that do hold (...)

Teilhard de Chardin et le « transhumain » : De la contradiction à la cohérence.Dominique Lambert - 2020 - Revista Portuguesa de Filosofia 76 (4):1761-1774.
After a brief description of what the contemporary trans-humanism is, we analyze the use of a trans-humanist-like vocabulary made by Fr. Teilhard de Chardin. After exhibiting a contradiction in Teilhard’s vision of human evolution, we show how his thought contains also some interesting elements which could help us to correct some dangerous drifts of the recent trans-humanist philosophy.
