The Ethics Code Does Not Equal Ethics: A Response to O’Donohue.Samuel Knapp, Michael C. Gottlieb & Mitchell M. Handelsman - 2020 - Ethics and Behavior 30 (4):303-309.

The authors claim that a major shortcoming of O’Donohue’s article is that he adopted an unrealistically expansive role for (...)

The Serpent and the Dove.Michah Gottlieb - 2021 - In Yitzhak Y. Melamed (ed.), A Companion to Spinoza. Hoboken, NJ: Wiley. pp. 338–348.
This chapter argues that in the Ethics Spinoza seeks to guide the reader to enlightenment. It explores how Spinoza decided to begin his quest for enlightenment before turning to two paths to enlightenment he presents in the Ethics. Spinoza contrasts the “things which regularly occur in ordinary life” with the “true good”. Spinoza is aware of modern skepticism that a path to mental tranquility and reliable joy can be found. Like Aristotle, Spinoza contrasts the “true good” with three main conventional (...)

Empowering psychologists to evaluate revisions to the APA ethics code.Samuel Knapp, Michael C. Gottlieb & Mitchell M. Handelsman - 2020 - Ethics and Behavior 30 (7):533-542.
ABSTRACT The authors argue that individual psychologists have an obligation to understand, review, and comment on upcoming revisions of the Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct. Psychologists may want to consider several factors as they review and prepare comments on these revisions. Among other things, commenting psychologists should consider the purposes of ethics codes and how the writing of a code can meet or balance these often-conflicting purposes; the overarching ethical theory or theories that should form the basis (...)

    Competing Values: A Respectful Critique of Narrative Research.Jon Lasser & Michael C. Gottlieb - 2001 - Ethics and Behavior 11 (2):191-194.
Smythe and Murray presented the basic ethical issues in narrative research in a comprehensive, well-reasoned, and direct manner. In this critique, we highlight 3 issues. Two matters appear to challenge the internal inconsistency of the assumptions of NR: privileging some voices over others and a potential inherent conflict of interest for some researchers. We also examine some issues regarding the protection of research participants and conclude with modest recommendations.
