Architecture at service: a profession between luxury provision, public agency, and counter-culture.Ole W. Fischer (ed.) - 2016 - Salt Lake City, Utah: University of Utah School of Architecture.
Dialectic IV convenes contributions with new takes on the long held proposition that architects are providers of design services. They service everyone from the status quo all the way to the subaltern. We know well how architects have historically fashioned themselves to be able to procure the most valued building commissions a people have to offer. There are temples, churches, and shrines, palaces and private villas, and surely monuments, state institutions, and corporate headquarters. But how have the members of the (...)

Modest Pragmatic Lessons for a Diverse and Incoherent Environmental Law.Ole W. Pedersen - 2013 - Oxford Journal of Legal Studies 33 (1):103-131.
This article seeks to contribute to ongoing debates on the nature and foundations of environmental law. In doing so, the article accepts the claim made in much of the recent analytical environmental law scholarship that the discipline suffers from a lack of coherence. In a response to this claim, the article probes the potential reasons behind this incoherence. In relying on recent scholarship in the disciplines of social psychology and cultural cognition, the article argues that individual understanding of environmental risks (...)

    Lacan and Language. A Reader's Guide to Ecrits. [REVIEW]W. Ver Eecke - 1984 - Review of Metaphysics 38 (2):396-398.
The importance of Lacan's thought for philosophical reflection has become obvious since the publication of A. de Waelhens's book Schizophrenia. De Waelhens, an historian of modern philosophy and a phenomenologist in his own right, became convinced by studying psychoanalysis and particularly the writings of Lacan that a Cartesian self-awareness was even less possible than Husserl had shown. De Waelhens also learned from Lacan that to be a subject is different from being conscious, or that there is thought in man elsewhere (...)

What Architects Desire.Cordula Rau, Eberhard Tröger & Ole W. Fischer (eds.) - 2010 - Springer Verlag.
The leitmotif of the German contribution to the 12th Architecture Biennial in Venice, “desire“, is at the same time the topic of a survey among architects ; answers are given through drawings. What are you longing for? The response drawings are highly individual, diversity becomes programme: both in picture language and in the presentation in terms of content, reactions are quite different. But there is one thing they all have in common: the burning desire of something concrete. Sometimes it spreads (...)

Disability compensation and responsibility.Alexander W. Cappelen, Ole Frithjof Norheim & Bertil Tungodden - 2010 - Politics, Philosophy and Economics 9 (4):411-427.
It is a central political goal to secure disabled individuals the same opportunities as others to pursue their conception of a good life. This goal reflects an ambition to combine an egalitarian and a liberal moral intuition. In this article, we analyse how disabled individuals who take part in economic activity should be compensated in order to respect these two intuitions. The article asks how a system of disability compensation should be structured and what the level of such compensation should (...)

Pessimism Counts in Favor of Biomedical Enhancement: A Lesson from the Anti-Natalist Philosophy of P. W. Zapffe.Ole Martin Moen - 2021 - Neuroethics 14 (2):315-325.
According to the Norwegian philosopher Peter Wessel Zapffe, human life is filled with so much suffering that procreation is morally impermissible. In the first part of this paper I present Zapffe’s pessimism-based argument for anti-natalism, and contrast it with the arguments for anti-natalism proposed by Arthur Schopenhauer and David Benatar. In the second part I explore what Zapffe’s pessimism can teach us about biomedical enhancement. I make the case that pessimism counts in favor of pursuing biomedical enhancements. The reason is (...)

The Superiority of 'Chemical Thinking' for Understanding Free Human Society According to Hegel.Mark Nowacki & Wilfried Ver Eecke - unknown
This paper examines the claim of G.W.F. Hegel that chemical thinking-the method of thinking employed in chemistry-marks a significant advance upon meCHANistic thinking-the method of thinking characteristic of physics. This is done in the context of Mancur Olson's theory of collective action and public goods. The analogy between the efficiency of a catalyst in bringing about chemical transformation and the function of leaders in free human society in developing latent groups to provide public goods is explored.

INTRODUCTION BY NANCY FUMERO What is a translation that stalls comprehension? That, when read, parsed, obfuscates comprehension through any language – English, Portuguese. It is inevitable that readers expect fidelity from translations. That language mirror with a sort of precision that enables the reader to become of another location, condition, to grasp in English in a similar vein as readers of Portuguese might from João Guimarães Rosa’s GRANDE SERTÃO: VEREDAS. There is the expectation that translations enable mobility. That what was (...)

Territorial Investigations: Including the Smooth Space Project.Annette W. Balkema & Henk Slager (eds.) - 1999 - Brill | Rodopi.
Nowadays there are many spaces of fascination in visual art. Of course, installative space and contextual space have been on the art scene for awhile. However, they are now accompanied by other spaces such as urban space, architectural space, cyberspace, hyperspace, and screen-based space. In this volume, architects, artists, theorists, three symposia and four exhibitions attempt to find answers to questions such as: Could the architectonic study and/or deconstruction of space play a decisive role in the shift of attention to (...)

  43. Does Life's Rapid Appearance Imply a Martian Origin?P. C. W. Davies - unknown
The hypothesis that life’s rapid appearance on Earth justifies the belief that life is widespread in the universe has been investigated mathematically by Lineweaver and Davis (Astrobiol- ogy 2002;2:293–304). However, a rapid appearance could also be interpreted as evidence for a nonterrestrial origin. I attempt to quantify the relative probabilities for a non-indigenous ver- sus indigenous origin, on the assumption that biogenesis involves one or more highly im- probable steps, using a generalization of Carter’s well-known observer-selection argument. The analysis is (...)
