Based on a survey of editors, publishers and staff members of 300 newspapers, this work documents the ethical confusion in the American press in the wake of the Watergate scandal and the Pentagon Papers controversy. It provides an analytical and historical framework to show how the press reached this point and argues for an ethical audit to give publications an independent check on their moral condition.

In a survey of newspaper staff members shows that, although implementation of public journalism projects is widespread at U.S. daily newspapers, tibe majority of jou!rnalists still adhere to traditional values in journalism practice and do not support public journalism values that depart from traditional journalism. Criticism of public journalism is that it poses a danger to traditional professional values of independence and objectivity. In the great majority of comparisons, we found thot journalists supporting certain public journalism practices were at least (...) as sensitive to traditional ethical concerns as those who did not support public journalism. Rural development and economic change has generally been associated with growth and the in-migration of nonlocal firms or their branch plants and offices. Such change has been critiqued and at times resisted because of its implicit “urbanism” and conflict with rural values and modes of social interaction. The inevitability of the conflict has always been assumed, given the perspectives of development groups and many rural residents. This paper examines the apparent conflicts between the rural ethos and the “growth ethos,” and (...) the considers the necessity for the pursuit of the forms of growth that tend to undermine rural values. The severely limited set of changes in the local economy considered by the common forms of growth-sponsoring economic development groups is then examined. Finally, the existence of alternative forms of economic change are hypothesized and their viability demonstrated. We conclude that improved economic well-being for rural residents need not sacrifice their values and lifestyles on the altar of urban-influenced “economic growth.”. (shrink)

Elles veulent, l'une et l'autre, hâter notre connaissance de l'homme et de son destin, mais leurs chemins, bien souvent, ne furent que parallèles. Or, avec le prodigieux développement des sciences du vivant, cette indifférence réciproque apparaît non seulement navrante, mais encore dangereuse. Le médecin, soucieux du comment, a besoin de donner un sens à sa pratique. Le philosophe, soucieux du pourquoi, ne peut ignorer ce que la (...) biologie lui permet désormais de penser dans des termes radicalement nouveaux. Cet ouvrage se propose ainsi de confronter médecine et philosophie. Et d'en tirer toutes les conséquences. Qu'il s'agisse, alors, de la vie, de la mort, du langage, de la théorie de la connaissance, de la pensée, ou même de " l'âme ", le philosophe trouvera dans cet ouvrage tout ce que la biologie lui fournit - du clonage aux sciences cognitives. Et, inversement, le biologiste-médecin, y trouvera, à travers les catégories de l'ontologie traditionnelle, l'horizon conceptuel qui, trop souvent, fait défaut à sa techné. En rétablissant ce dialogue entre deux disciplines majeures, Philippe Meyer entend dépasser l'opposition entre matérialisme et spiritualisme. Il définit ici le cadre à l'intérieur duquel l'honnête homme pourra donner toute sa dignité, à la singularité interindividuelle sans pour autant renoncer aux exigences des sciences dures. La question de ce petit livre est simple : peut-on aller au-delà du constat de crise et d'impuissance dont le philosophe se fait le prophète depuis plus d'un siècle? Peut-on parler de la science sans complexe d'infériorité, de Dieu sans obscurantisme, d'existence sans tomber dans la banalité du café du commerce, de politique sans consacrer le cynisme, de morale sans faire dans le sermon? Bref, la philosophie peut-elle aider à faire comprendre et à dépasser les apories du temps présent qu'elle (...) a fait siennes, comme un malade ressasse sa propre maladie pour se donner le sentiment qu'ainsi il peut la mettre à distance à défaut de la vaincre? Toutes ces questions sont aujourd'hui les nôtres, et il ne faut pas avoir peur de parler des grands problèmes qui agitent les hommes depuis l'aube des temps, car si la philosophie a un sens, c'est bien en ce qu'elle envisage les questions ultimes dans une plus ou moins grande systématicité selon les époques. Open peer commentary on the target article “Who Conceives of Society?” by Ernst von Glasersfeld. Excerpt: I will focus on one crucial step in von Glasersfeld’s argumentation, viz. his view that every individual constructs his own private meanings for linguistic expressions, so that linguistic interaction and even communication in general is based on a notion of compatibility between different speakers’ private conceptual schemes. The central question here is: “Just what does it mean that different private conceptual schemes are compatible, or (...) what constitutes a viable criterion to this end?” As von Glasersfeld himself stresses twice , the criteria to be looked for can only be “public,” residing in properties of verbal and non-verbal actions of the interacting individuals, properties that can be sensed and processed by the participating system.
