The aim of this study was to verify whether chimpanzees demonstrate an auditory laterality during the orientation reaction, and which hemisphere is responsible for processing the emotional stimuli and which for the species-specific vocalizations. The study involved nine chimpanzees from the Warsaw Municipal Zoological Garden. They were tested individually in their bedrooms. Chimpanzees approached a tube filled with food, located in the centre of the cage. Randomly selected sounds were played from the speakers when the subject was focused on getting (...) food. Individual reactions were observed and outcomes reported. The four types of sound used: thunderstorm, dog barking, chimpanzee vocalization and a zookeeper’s voice. To test whether chimpanzees demonstrate auditory laterality we used a single sample X2 test. The existence of auditory laterality has been confirmed. The sound of the storm caused the orientation reaction to the left, while chimpanzee vocalization - to the right. On this basis we can conclude that among chimpanzees, arousing stimuli are being processed by the right hemisphere, and species-specific vocalizations by the left. However, the set of stimuli was limited so the study did not unequivocally resolve this issue. (shrink)

W tym momencie zanikają ich pierwotne powiązania z innymi leksemami, które miały w języku wyjściowym. Wchodzą one w nowe relacje semantyczne w danym polu wyrazowym i w ten sposób stają się jego nieodłącznym elementem. Na płaszczyźnie semantycznej podlegają procesowi asymilacji, co znacznie wpływa na strukturę danego pola wyrazowego i przyczynia się do zmian w jego obrębie. Zapożyczenia z innego języka mogą ze względu (...) na swe znaczenie stać się w danych polach hiperonimami lub też pojawić się w nowym otoczeniu leksykalnym obok rodzimych synonimów i pojawić się tam jako hiponimy i kohiponimy. Ich użycie zależy jedynie od użytkownika języka, w zależności od kontekstu językowego i sytuacyjnego. Współczesny świat, zdominowany przez elektroniczne środki przekazu, to już zupełnie inne pojmowanie komunikacji językowej, zarówno tej w formie pisanej, jak i mówionej. Dominują w nim skrótowe i kompaktowe wypowiedzi; język z jednej strony traci na znaczeniu, z drugiej zaś - chłonie nowinki z innych systemów językowych, z którymi wchodzi w interakcje na różnych płaszczyznach. Niewątpliwe ogromną rolę odgrywają w tym procesie różnice kulturowe i związane z tym nie tylko kwestie mentalności, stereotypy, lecz także odmienne pojmowanie zjawisk dnia codziennego, w tym (...) również sposób definiowania poczucia humoru. Ciekawą rzeczą jest więc próba wskazania na podobieństwa oraz różnice między tzw. „typowo niemieckim” poczuciem humoru a niemieckim programem komediowym Was guckst du?, produkowanym i prowadzonym przez obcokrajowca. Kaya Yanar, autor i gospodarz tego programu, jest niewątpliwie najlepszym przykładem na to, że wymienione wcześniej „typowo niemieckie” poczucie humoru odbiega w znacznym stopniu od rodzaju żartu, proponowanego właśnie przez Yanara. Was guckst du? daje możliwość zanalizowania języka audycji komediowej, odwołującej się głównie do kultury świata arabskiego i wszelkich zjawisk z nią związanych, kwestii opanowania i posługiwania się językiem niemieckim właśnie przez obcokrajowców z tego kręgu kulturowego. W przełożeniu na leksykę i jej użycie w praktyce oznacza to wykorzystanie w programie zjawiska wieloznaczności, wynikających z braku znajomości języka, jako źródła sytuacji komediowych, które w połączeniu z niezwykle barwną osobą prowadzącego, odpowiednim obrazem, charakterem postaci oraz motywami muzycznymi, jest punktem wyjścia do całościowej analizy tegoż programu. The matter under consideration in this article is the problem of borrowed German lexical elements and their life in the borrowing Polish language. The starting point is a short overview of the elements of the lexical field of science and their change of meaning in the Polish language.

Zmiany dokonujące się w języku na przestrzeni dziejów są wynikiem zmian w rzeczywistości pozajęzykowej. Nowe elementy leksyki są m. in. efektem procesu zapożyczenia z innych języków. Słowa te w momencie przejmowania ich przez inny język tracą swe wszelkie pierwotne powiązania z innymi leksemami, które miały w języku, z jakiego zostały przejęte, i wchodzą w nowe relacje semantyczne z istniejącymi już w danym poiu wyrazowym słowami, stając się jego nieodłącznym elementem. W procesie asymilacji na płaszczyźnie semantycznej wchodzą one w nowe dla (...) siebie relacje paradygmatyczne i syntagmatyczne, wpływając znacząco na strukturę danego pola wyrazowego i przyczyniając się do zmian w jego obrębie. Zapożyczone z innego języka wyrazy mogą ze względu na swe znaczenie stać się w danych polach elementami dominującymi lub też pojawić się w nowym otoczeniu leksykalnym obok rodzimych synonimów. We współczesnej polszczyźnie występuje wiele słów, będących zapożyczeniami z języka niemieckiego. Najstarsze zapożyczenia pojawiły się w języku polskim wraz z nowymi przedmiotami codziennego użytku i były jednocześnie zapożyczeniami fonetycznymi. Obecnie nie wyczuwa się już ich obcego pochodzenia. Słowa przejęte z niemieckiego podlegały w języku polskim licznym i różnorodnym procesom adaptacyjnym, dotyczącym m. in. ich formy gramatycznej, fonetycznej czy też morfologii. Ulegały one również licznym zmianom znaczeniowym, tzn. rozszerzały bądź zawężały swe pierwotne znaczenie, zmieniały również zabarwienie stylistyczne. Poza tym można też (...) mówić o przesunięciu znaczenia wyrazu zapożyczonego oraz o zjawisku przejmowania tylko niektórych znaczeń pierwotnych danego słowa, pochodzącego z języka niemieckiego. Ciekawym zjawiskiem jest również występowanie we współczesnej polszczyźnie takich wyrazów niemieckiego pochodzenia, które jednak nie posiadają już swych odpowiedników we współczesnym języku niemieckim, tzn. w nowo-wysoko-niemieckim, gdyż zostały one zapożyczone bardzo dawno, ale znaleźć je można jeszcze w słownikach etymologicznych języka polskiego, gdzie podawane są jak o odpowiedniki niemieckie danych wyrazów, np. fastryga, framuga itd. Całkowite podporządkowanie się regułom języka przejmującego dany wyraz obcego pochodzenia świadczy o jego zakorzenieniu się w danym języku oraz dopasowaniu się do nowego systemu językowego. Wyrazy pochodne od danego zapożyczenia, frazeologizmy, w których te zapożyczenia występują, synonimy, pojawiające się w danym języku obok wyrazów zapożyczonych oraz frekwencja zapożyczeń w danym języku świadczą o stopniu zakorzenienia się danego wyrazu obcego pochodzenia w języku polskim. W wyniku kontaktów polsko-niemieckich na płaszczyźnie kultury, polityki i gospodarki na przestrzeni dziejów pojawiły się w języku polskim liczne wyrazy pochodzenia niemieckiego. We współczesnej polszczyźnie występuje bardzo wiele zapożyczeń niemieckich, z czego większość stanowią rzeczowniki. Najczęściej jednak ich obce pochodzenie nie jest znane przeciętnemu użytkownikowi języka polskiego, gdyż wyrazy te zasymilowały się w polszczyźnie zarówno na płaszczyźnie fonologicznej, graficznej, jak i morfologicznej. Największą grupę rzeczowników pochodzenia niemieckiego stanowią te, w których przypadku zachowane zostało ich pierwotne znaczenie, co wiąże się z (...) faktem, że jako pojęcia i terminy fachowe nie miały w języku polskim swoich odpowiedników, pod wpływem których mogłoby ulec zmianie ich znaczenie. Wśród zapożyczeń znajdują się również takie, których znaczenie całkowicie różni się od pierwotnego znaczenia słowa niemieckiego. Znaczenie zapożyczeń ulegało zawężeniu, gdy dany wyraz pojawiał się w języku polskim nie we wszystkich swych znaczeniach pierwotnych lub też rozszerzeniu, gdy został on zapożyczony zс wszystkimi pierwotnymi znaczeniami i dodatkowo obok nich pojawiło się zupełnie nowe znaczenie. Częstym zjawiskiem jest występowanie równocześnie różnych typów zmian znaczenia wyrazu zapożyczonego, np. zawężenia i przesunięcia lub/i rozszerzenia znaczenia. (shrink)

W świecie współczesnych mediów prasa nadal odgrywa znaczącą rolę w przekazywaniu informacji ze świata polityki, kultury, nauki i życia społecznego. Obok funkcji poznawczej ma ona za zadanie wprowadzić elementy rozrywki – w postaci karykatury, żartów rysunkowych czy krótkich śmiesznych tekstów, piętnujących ludzkie zachowania, przedstawiających w krzywym zwierciadle rzeczywistość, w której żyjemy. Ciekawą rzeczą jest znaczenie niemieckiego określenia Pressewitz, które może być rozumiane jako `żart prasowy` oraz `żart o prasie`. Niniejszy artykuł jest próbą udzielenia odpowiedzi na pytanie, jaką rolę odgrywają żarty (...) prasowe w kształtowaniu obrazu rzeczywistości poprzez ośmieszające przedstawienie zjawisk społecznych, ludzkich zachowań i postaw oraz jaki obraz funkcjonowania prasy pojawia się jako temat żartów. In this article an attempt is made to discuss the German joke regarding its assignment to the class of bad jokes in German. The question of what is a pun and what determines that a humorous text can be classified as bad or good is also important and very interesting. No less important are questions about the possibility of breaking all rules and norms, both of linguistic and social natures. These considerations are documented by examples of German jokes; on the (...) one hand Loriot’s texts, texts from “Was guckst du?” and on the other from websites. The question of whether an analysed joke is good or bad still remains open despite all possible classification attempts, because its interpretation is subjective, to be assessed for what it is by the recipient from the outset. Również kwestia zastosowania konkretnej leksyki obcego pochodzenia, brak znajomości jej znaczenia, wskazanie na brakującą wiedzę z zakresu danego słownictwa fachowego, w tym przypadku z dziedziny informatyki, staje się punktem wyjścia do stworzenia krótkich zabawnych form scenicznych. Znalezione i określone w trakcie przeprowadzonej analizy źródła komizmu, ewidentnie związane z życiem codziennym i słownictwem z różnych zakresów, odzwierciedlają zarówno językowe, jak i pozajęzykowe możliwości tworzenia zabawnych (...) tekstów, jakimi niewątpliwie są omówione w tym artykule skecze. The matter under consideration in this article is the ethnic joke as a primary element of the German TV comedy “Was guckst du?”. The starting point is a short overview of the ethnic joke and the extralingual phenomena that are associated with such jokes, and – above all – pointing at the function of stereotypes as causes for jokes about individual nations. Texts of jokes concerning individual nations were used to illustrate the reviewed problems. In this paper the authors address the issue of investments made by family businesses. Their study attempted to verify the level of investments made by Polish family businesses in comparison with the level of investments made by Polish non-family businesses. The study focused on the analysis of investment flows of Polish listed companies included in the WIG index for the years 2006-2018. A total of 233 companies were analyzed, including 177 non-family businesses and 56 family businesses. The results corroborated the (...) argument that Polish listed non-family businesses invest much more money than family businesses. It was also observed that only a small percentage of companies in both groups invest their finances in research and development. (shrink)

Laktancjusz i Euzebiusz z Cezarei opisali wizję, którą miał Konstantyn Wielki przed decydującą bitwą z Maksencjuszem na Moście Mulwijskim: we śnie objawił mu się krzyż cały w świetle i pod nim napis: „Pod tym znakiem zwyciężaj”. Konstantyn zabrał krzyż na bitwę i to zapewniło mu zwycięstwo. Od czasów Konstantyna krzyż stał się nie tylko najważniejszym symbolem chrześcijaństwa, ale także symbolem chrześcijańskiego władcy, bronią jego zwycięstwa. W literaturze krzyż odnoszący się do władzy ziemskiej określany jest jako krzyż Konstantyna. Celem artykułu jest (...) przeanalizowanie funkcjonowania krzyża Konstantyna u Słowian południowych i na Rusi. Podjęto próbę udowodnienia tezy, że znaczenie krzyża Konstantyna u Bułgarów i Serbów było duże i bliskie bizantyńskiemu, natomiast na Rusi, pomimo podejmowanych prób upowszechnienia, krzyż nie odgrywał większej roli. Przyczyną były uwarunkowania polityczno-religijne, a przede wszystkim głęboki kult ikon maryjnych, który nie miał odpowiednika w żadnym innym państwie ekumeny wschodniochrześcijańskiej. To ikony maryjne w powszechnej świadomości Rusinów ingerowały w losy kraju i pojedynczego człowieka, one decydowały o zwycięstwach, przyczyniały się do ustanawiania ziemskiego porządku. Pełniły zatem taką rolę jaką u Słowian południowych krzyż Konstantyna. (shrink)

The research concerned the determinants of social competencies, which are significant indicators of the quality of interpersonal relations. The aim of the study was to verify the connection between social competencies and temperamental traits. The respondent group included 220 university students of different faculties aged 19-24. Social competencies were measured with the use of a Social Competencies Questionnaire by Anna Matczak, while temperamental traits were measured with The Formal Characteristics of Behaviour-Temperament Inventory, by Bogdan Zawadzki and Jan Strelau. The research (...) proved that activity, emotional reactivity and sensory sensitivity are significant predictors of social competencies. The predictive value of these traits differs depending on the kind of measured competency. (shrink)

The aim of the paper is to explore the interrelation between persuasion tactics and properties of speech acts. We investigate two types of arguments ad: ad hominem and ad baculum. We show that with both of these tactics, the structures that play a key role are not inferential, but rather ethotic, i.e., related to the speaker’s character and trust. We use the concepts of illocutionary force and constitutive conditions related to the character or status of the speaker in order to (...) explain the dynamics of these two techniques. In keeping with the research focus of the Polish School of Argumentation, we examine how the pragmatic and rhetorical aspects of the force of ad hominem and ad baculum arguments exploit trust in the speaker’s status to influence the audience’s cognition. The morning show is a new journalistic genre found in commercial broadcasting. This type of morning show consists of a few hours of block programming. A morning show consists of popular music, game shows, aspects of a talk show, call-in jokes, and news reports, but the most important feature is the personality DJs. This article is an attempt at characterizing this genre.

This paper is devoted to clarifying Hannah Arendt’s concept of political freedom by the means of analysing its structure. My analysis proceeds in three steps. Firstly, I distinguish a pre-political concept of freedom as exercising spontaneity, which is at the root of Arendt’s understanding of political freedom. Secondly, I analyse her account of freedom as exercising action and indicate its relationship to the elementary freedom of spontaneity. Arendt endowed action with a distinguished importance, since she assumed that it is the (...) only activity within the vita activa, which has a special anthropological and axiological significance. According to Arendt, only action allows one to truly experience the fundamental aspect of the human condition, which is the fact of human plurality; it is also the only activity which allows one to exercise specifically public principles, such as solidarity, equality, or justice. Thirdly, I indicate how these two accounts of freedom translate into Arendt’s concept of political freedom. This analysis reveals that the Arendtian concept of political freedom is markedly original. She did not define it in a usual manner, i.e. through indicating bundles of legal and political rights which determine the accepted scope of participation in the public affairs. The inherent part of her concept of political freedom is a specific account of how it must be exercised. Political freedom understood as the participation in governance exercised through action is not merely an activity of instrumental, but also anthropological and axiological importance, which is due to the special anthropological and axiological meaning of action. In the final section, I discuss the practical dimension of Arendt’s theory. She doubted whether the traditional representative democracy is capable of accommodating her ‘rich’ ideal of political freedom, therefore she proposed an alternative account of political system based on councils. I formulate objections against this proposition and demonstrate that councils would presumably fail to accommodate Arendt’s exacting account of political freedom. (shrink)

The Uppsala School in philosophy and the Vienna Circle are prima facie similar currents in contemporary philosophy. Both reject metaphysics, claim that reality is a spatio­‑temporal realm and adhere to noncognitivism in terms of values. However, justifications of these assumptions are quite different. In the following article we reconstruct main theses of both mentioned currents and then we indicate their impact on one of the major jurisprudential movements, namely Scandinavian Legal Realism. We focus on Alf Ross’ legal philosophy, as it (...) was an attempt to accommodate both: the philosophy of the Uppsala School and of the Vienna Circle. We trace those two sources of inspiration in Ross’ theory of legal validity and of legal concepts. (shrink)

The aim of this paper is to provide a model that allows the representation and analysis of circularity in ethotic structures, i.e. in communication structures related to the speaker’s character and in particular, his credibility. The paper studies three types of cycles: in self-referential sentences, embedded testimony and ethotic begging the question. It is shown that standard models allow the reconstruction of the circularities only if those circular utterances are interpreted as ethotic arguments. Their alternative, assertive interpretation requires enriching the (...) existing models with a purely ethotic component related to the credibility of the performer of any (not necessarily argumentative) speech act. Frankfurt-style examples aim to undermine the principle that moral responsibility requires the ability to do otherwise, which in turn requires the availability of alternate possibilities.1 They are thus considered a reason for refuting incompatibilism. One lesson drawn from Frankfurt-style examples is exemplified by the compatibilist account of Fischer and Ravizza.2 They accept the impact of Frankfurt-style cases and hold that the incompatibilist requirement of regulative control, which involves the agent’s ability to perform the action and her ability to perform the (...) contrary action, must be dropped. In its stead, they propose the weaker requirement of guidance control, which only demands the agent’s causal control over the action for which she is to be held responsible. (shrink)

Building on our diverse research traditions in the study of reasoning, language and communication, the Polish School of Argumentation integrates various disciplines and institutions across Poland in which scholars are dedicated to understanding the phenomenon of the force of argument. Our primary goal is to craft a methodological programme and establish organisational infrastructure: this is the first key step in facilitating and fostering our research movement, which joins people with a common research focus, complementary skills and an enthusiasm to work (...) together. The paper focuses on the issue of truth-telling in non-fictional narratives of (in)justice. Based on examples of rape narratives, domestic abuse narratives, human trafficking narratives and asylum seeker narratives, I examine the various difficulties in telling the truth in such stories, particularly those related to various culturally conditioned ideas of how the world works, which at the same time form the basis of, among other things, legal discourse and officials’ decision-making processes. I will also demonstrate that such culturally conditioned ideas, (...) which are the basis of official discourse, can be considered within the category of both the social imaginary of the just world in the Taylorian sense of the term, and the social master narrative, which in the case of stories of (in)justice is often based on the just world hypothesis. This book is about beliefs, language, communication and cognition. It deals with the fundamental issue of the interpretation of the speaker's utterance expressing a belief and reporting on beliefs of other people in the form of oratio obliqua. The main aim of the book is to present a new account of the problem of interpreting utterances expressing beliefs and belief reports in terms of an approach called Default Semantics.

Pragmatics and dialectics are two disciplines which have been amongst the first and most important partners for argument studies in the exploration of the complex realm of communication. Treating argumentation as a construct consisting of premises and conclusion allows for investigating some interesting properties of the phenomenon of reasoning, but does not capture a variety of aspects related to the usage of natural language and dialogical context in which real-life argumentation is typically embedded. It is widely assumed that Frankfurt-style cases provide a reason for rejecting incompatibilism because they provide a reason for rejecting the requirement that the agent be able to do otherwise. One compatibilist strategy for dealing with the cases, pursued by Fischer and Ravizza, is to weaken the mentioned requirement. An analogous strategy on the part of the incompatibilist, which appears to be unexplored in the literature on moral responsibility, is exemplified in Belnap and Perloff ’s logic of agency. I show (...) how their stit theory can handle Frankfurt-style cases and defend it from Fischer’s criticism of “flicker-of-freedom” strategies. I also note some of the limitations of the stit rendition of the cases. (shrink)

We show that the variety of equivalential algebras with regularization gives the algebraic semantics for the -fragment of intuitionistic propositional logic. We also prove that this fragment is hereditarily structurally complete.
