Reading the Communist Manifesto against the contemporary background of massive unemployment, the author argues that Marx's theory of work is no longer adequate to tackle the problem of `workers without work' and suggests that it has to be reformulated in such a way that its normative intuitions and its critical impulses can be maintained. In the first part, he presents a philosophical critique of Marxism that is inspired by Jürgen Habermas and Hannah Arendt. In the second part, he presents a (...) sociological critique of Marxism and argues that the theory of the alienation of work implies a justification of work and the work society. Finally, in the last part, the author presents an ideological critique of Marxism that is inspired by Marcel Mauss' sociology of the gift. Criticising the contractualist assumptions of workfare solutions, he proposes a package solution for a radical decommodification of the labour market by means of a disjunction of income and work. Cet ouvrage vise à déployer la complexité de la philosophie cartésienne, à interroger l'effort de Descartes pour concilier les deux mouvements de l'existence humaine: la liberté qu'a le moi de mettre à distance ses objets de pensée et son plaisir à ressentir son incarnation corporelle, pourtant inexplicable. Il s'agit d'une présentation globale de la pensée cartésienne qui s'attache à dégager ses tensions problématiques.

La philosophie de Descartes est souvent associée à l'image d'une rationalité ascétique, fondée sur un exercice solitaire de la pensée, et hostile par principe aux passions humaines comme au sens commun. Cette image d'une rationalité hautaine, qui n'aurait rien à voir avec la tradition humaniste issue de la Renaissance, est celle que l'ouvrage entend remettre en question. L'oeuvre de Descartes s'y trouve éclairée par la problématique humaniste de la civilité et par son effort pour définir un moyen terme vertueux entre (...) une censure ascétique de la nature humaine et un abandon à la spontanéité aveugle de la sensibilité. Dégager la perspective d'une "civilité de la raison cartésienne" c'est aussi s'efforcer de construire pour l'humanisme un fondement métaphysique et rationnel, lié tout à la fois à l'idée théologique d'une "bonne nature" et à une description phénoménologique de notre expérience du monde. Aussi s'agit-il de restituer non pas seulement le dessin doctrinal et argumentatif de la philosophie de Descartes, mais également la couleur et la vitalité associées aux tonalités éthiques et affectives d'une écriture à travers laquelle seule se délivre la conception cartésienne de la subjectivité. Cet article étudie la présence de la valeur humaniste de "douceur" chez Montaigne et Descartes, dans le champ de l'éducation, des relations humaines, mais aussi de la méthode cartésienne pour bien conduire son entendement. Ainsi, la méthode doit faire preuve de douceur dans la culture de l'âme, et Descartes dans l'Epître à Voet décrit la douceur comme une composante essentielle des "lois de l'amitié" entre les hommes. We resolve a useful formulation of the question how a statistician can coherently incorporate the information in a consulted expert’s probability assessment for an event into a personal posterior probability assertion. Using a framework that recognises the total information available as composed of units available only to each of them along with units available to both, we show: that a sufficient statistic for all the information available to both the expert and the statistician is the product of their odds ratios (...) in favour of the event; that the geometric mean of their two probabilities specifies a contour of pairs of assertions in the unit-square that yield the same posterior probability; that the information-combining function is parameterised by an unknown probability for the event conditioned only on the unspecified information common to both the statistician and the expert; and that an assessable mixing distribution over this unspecified probability allows an integrable mixture distribution to represent a computable posterior probability. The exact results allow the identification of the subclass of coherent probabilities that are externally Bayesian operators. This subclass is equivalent to the class of combining functions that honour the principles of uniformity and compromise. (shrink)

The study of human origins is a kaleidoscopic field, a multitude of objects, reflections, and disciplines a swirl in an ever-changing tumult. The extreme diversity of the elements of information that are indispensable to this field of study (teeth, bones, apes, genes, ancient objects, present-day objects, biomechanical factors, cultural constructions …) appears all by itself to be enough to consign any attempt at synthesis to the realm of the Utopian. It hardly seems reasonable to expect the disparate sciences that fuel (...) the field (paleoanthropology, archaeology, molecular biology, physics, psychology, and others) and the contradictory conceptions of scientific activity that they defend (human sciences, natural sciences, experimental sciences, exact sciences) to be joined with any regularity. As for formulating an overall problematics of the interdependent phenomena encountered in the field, one would have to be more than optimistic to entertain such dreams. And yet this is exactly the program that prehistory and paleoanthropology are laboring to construct tinder the label “the study of the origins of man,” an expression that includes both diachronic processes (human evolution) and activities or behaviors from particular moments, elements that are exceedingly difficult to compare given the separation of their geographic and temporal contexts. In searching to recover that memory trace the writer discovers that the memory datum itself diffuses and breaks up into the present remembering action of the one who remembers. The essay anatomizes that process of diffusion, and tries to come up with a definition of memory.

This is a review of an interdisciplinary work of intellectual history on the Moscow philosophical-mathematical school. The author, Ilona Svetlikova, is primarily interested in the thought of the late nineteenth and early twentieth-century mathematician and philosopher Nikolai Bugaev, of his son Boris Bugaev — better known under his nom de plume Andrei Belyi —, of Nikolai Bugaev’s student Pavel Nekrasov, and of other disciples of Bugaev, especially Vissarion Alekseev, the Baron Mikhail Taube, and Pavel Florensky. The book explores the views (...) of these thinkers, all of whom were more or less closely associated with the Moscow Mathematical Society, on issues at the crossroads of mathematics, philosophy, literature, religion, and political ideology. Since he was the originator and pillar of the Moscow philosophico-mathematical circle, my critical comments focus on Nikolai Bugaev. (shrink)
