The focus of this paper is the analysis of the epistemological and practical role played bypathe/affections in Epicurus’ philosophy. Epicurus firstly considered the affections not as emotional/passional conditions, but as firm criteria of truth and more specifically as the third criterion of the canonic (i.e. the epistemological part of his philosophical system). In this article the critical reactions (in particular by the Peripatetic side: Aristocles of Messene) against the Epicurean position about the function of the affections will be investigated too. This short note deals with an epigram preserved by the Anthologia Palatina Book IX (360) attributed to a Metrodorus whom, especially for chronological reasons, one tends to identify with the Epicurean Metrodorus of Lampsacus, at least from the Phoinix von Kolophon by Gustav Adolph Gerhard (1909). This epigram looks like a “symmetrical” polemical reply to the immediately preceding one (AP IX 359), which can be attributed (but not without difficulty) to the Hellenistic poet Posidippus. The careful historical-philosophical examination of the (...) contents of this alleged Epicurean epigram (360) leads to believe that it is basically impossible that the author is an Epicurean philosopher such as Metrodorus. This book examines the phenomenological anthropology of Edith Stein. It specifically focuses on the question which Stein addressed in her work Finite and Eternal Being: What is the foundational principle that makes the individual unique and unrepeatable within the human species? Traditional analyses of Edith Stein's writings have tended to frame her views on this issue as being influenced by Aristotle and Thomas Aquinas, while neglecting her interest in the lesser-known figure of Duns Scotus. Yet, as this book shows, with (...) regard to the question of individuality, Stein was critical of Aquinas' approach, finding that of Duns Scotus to be more convincing. In order to get to the heart of Stein's readings of Duns Scotus, this book looks at her published writings and her personal correspondence, in addition to conducting a meticulous analysis of the original codexes on which her sources were based. Written with diligence and flair, the book critically evaluates the authenticity of Stein's sources and shows how the position of Scotus himself evolved. It highlights the originality of Stein's contribution, which was to rediscover the relevance of Mediaeval scholastic thought and reinterpret it in the language of the Phenomenological school founded by Edmund Husserl. La question de l’analogie – fondamentale pour toute la néoscolastique, de Gilson à Maritain – trouva sa consécration en 1932 dans le fameux Analogia entis d’Erich Przywara. À la suite de l’influence de Przywara, l’analogie a eu un rôle décisif aussi dans la pensée d’Edith Stein. Mais en décrivant la dialectique phénoménologique entre être fini et être éternel Stein confère à l’analogie de l’être une tournure que l’on peut qualifier de « personnelle ». Il s’agit du rapport entre deux « (...) je suis » : le « je suis » humain et créatural et le « je suis » divin. L’analogia entis originelle est donc pour Stein le rapport entre deux personnes. Na última fase da sua evolução, Feuerbach propõe um materialismo que não anule a originalidade do sujeito e lhe reconheça um âmbito de liberdade. Confrontando-se com Schopenhauer e com Kant, ele examina o sentimento de remorso e de arrependimento, bem como as condições de imputabilidade de um ato. Enquanto aqueles recorriam à distinção entre a esfera inteligível e a esfera sensível do homem, Feuerbach procura reconduzir tudo ao único principio da sensibilidade. Esta, mudando no tempo, torna possível reconhecer como erro (...) um ato realizado e operar em si uma mudança. Contra Schopenhauer, Feuerbach afirma que o caráter do homem não é inato, nem imodificável, por isso é equivocada a pena de morte. O fundamento da liberdade é o eu que age no jogo das paixões e é essencialmente em relação com os outros. As sugestões no campo moral e jurídico são interessantes, mas permanecem abertas algumas questões éticas, como aquela do fundamento absoluto da obrigação moral, já posta por Kant na explicação da consciência moral. Nel 2015 si è svolto a Milano l’Expo, una manifestazione fieristica dal titolo “Nutrire il pianeta. Energia per la vita” che in 184 giorni e con 145 nazioni partecipanti, fra cui ovviamente il Brasile, ha avuto 21 milioni di visitatori. Sull’onda di questo evento è tornato di attualità il celebre motto di Feuerbach: «L’uomo è ciò che mangia ». Nella lingua tedesca l’assonanza fra le terze persone del verbo essere e del verbo mangiare è evidente e suggerisce una stretta relazione (...) fra essere e mangiare. Non a caso i critici dell’epoca vi videro un’espressione di rozzo materialismo, che poteva essere avvicinata alla frase di Karl Vogt: «I pensieri stanno press’a poco nel medesimo rapporto col cervello, come la bile al fegato o l’urina alle reni». Vogt era ben consapevole di usare un’espressione «in un certo senso rozza», ma intendeva dire che «tutte le attività psichiche» erano «solo funzioni della sostanza cerebrale» [...]. (shrink)

An apparently paradoxical tendency in contemporary Philosophy of Religion consists in no longer seeking transcendence starting with invisible and immaterial elements, such as the soul, the spirit, or God known to reason. Instead a bridge between philosophy and theology has been singled out in the body. But how can one reach an idea of transcendence starting from the body? In these short reflections, I will try to show how finitude and immanence are the phenomenological meaning of the body. Consciousness itself (...) is finite because it is embodied. So it is not possible to transcend the body. It is only possible to decide how to live out one’s finitude: The body can be oriented to the consumption of the other, by periodic attempts to prolong one’s own life and power. Or, on the contrary, it is possible to let the others eat and consume me. Only others, indeed, can survive me and transcend my finitude.
