Given that translation is always an imperfect process, why do people single out certain words as simply untranslatable? This article looks at one such supposedly untranslatable term, the German word Wissenschaft. Rather than take the word’s status as a given, it examines the historical processes through which Wissenschaft came to be seen as a word impossible to render into English. The article examines a mid-nineteenth century debate about Francis Bacon to show that as late as the 1860s “science” (...) and “ Wissenschaft” were still treated as comparable terms. Wissenschaft began to seem untranslatable only later in the nineteenth century, as part of a critique that set German national character in opposition to the supposedly shallow materialism of the British. After this initial divergence, scholars in the twentieth century continued to elaborate on the difference between the terms, with lasting implications for our retrospective understandings of nineteenth-century intellectual life. Skeptiker aller Schattierungen nicht gern zur Kenntnis, daft sie ihren Standpunkt nicht beweisen konnen. Eine solche komplexe Feststellung provoziert geradezu das emporte Aufbegehren: "Dies kann doch unmoglich dein letztes Wort sein. Irgendeine Losung in der einen oder anderen Richtung muB es doch geben!" Dazu kann ich nur sagen: "Diese,Losung' hast du jederzeit in der Hand: Entscheide dich!" Hier trage ich allerdings an einer gewissen, bei man chen Lesern entstandenen Begriffsverwirrung vermutlich selbst Schuld. Obwohl es mir schien, daB aus dem jeweiligen (...) Kon­ text hinreichend klar hervorgehe, was ich mit "unentscheid­ bar" meine, sind einige Leser tiber die Doppeldeutigkeit dieses Wortes gestolpert. Wenn ich sage, daB das Problem der Metaphysik absolut unentscheidbar sei, so verwende ich das Wort "entscheidbar" in einem rein theoretischen Sinn (in Analogie zu dem allerdings viel spezielleren Sprachge­ brauch, nach dem man sagt, Godel habe ftir sein Unvoll­ standigkeitstheorem einen formal unentscheidbaren Satz konstruiert). Gemeint ist, grob gesprochen: "Diese Frage laBt sich nicht durch reines Nachdenken entscheiden". Da­ gegen ist es gerade meine Auffassung, daft das Problem, ob hie et nunc eine echte, gelten zu lassende und anzuerkennende Einsicht vorliegt, allein durch meine personliche Gewissens­ entscheidung, fur die ich nur mir selbst gegenuber verant­ wortlich bin, gelost werden kann. Mein personliches Gewis­ sen ist nicht nur bei ethischen Entscheidungen die oberste Instanz, sondern auch bei den scheinbar ganz entsubjekti­ vierten objektiv-wissenschaftlichen Sachfragen. Practical Knowledge, Science and Disasters. The History of Social Science Disaster Research, 1949–1979. During the second half of the twentieth century several US-American social science “disaster research groups” conducted field studies after earthquakes, factory explosions and “racial riots”. Their aim was to provide practical knowledge that could be applied in the planning and managing of future disasters of both peace- and wartime nature. In this paper, I will elaborate on how this research goal conflicted with some scientists’ aspirations to develop (...) more theoretical knowledge and their own ideals of “scientificity”. I will also show how the generated research results came to be ‘impractical knowledge’, which was difficult or impossible to apply. Furthermore this paper analyzes the scientific practices that were involved at different stages of the knowledge production process and contributed to disaster research's ‘precarious’ character. ZusammenfassungIn der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts begannen die meisten europäischen Staaten, Wetterbeobachtungsnetze zu finanzieren. Damit veränderten sich die klimatologischen Datenpraktiken fundamental. Am Beispiel der Schweiz beleuchtet dieser Aufsatz die politischen, institutionellen und methodologischen Dimensionen nationaler Datenarchive. Die Institutionalisierung der Datenproduktion im nationalen Rahmen führte einerseits dazu, dass mehr und systematischere Beobachtungen angestellt und publiziert wurden. Andererseits waren die Erhebungen an staatliche Grenzen gebunden, was nicht ausschloss, dass die nationalen Institutionen entsprechend ihrem universalistischen Wissenschaftsverständnis eine Standardisierung auf internationaler Ebene anstrebten. (...) Die nationale Rahmung prägte auch die Verarbeitung der Wetterbeobachtung zu statistischen Größen. Diese bildeten die Grundlage für nationale Klimatografien und entfalteten so eine nationsbildende Wirkung. Die Schweizerische Meteorologische Zentralanstalt schrieb ihren Klimadaten sowohl einen praktischen Nutzen als auch ein großes Potenzial für die Forschung zu. Der epistemische Status der Datenerfassung war aber unsicher, zumal physikalisch orientierte Ansätze an Bedeutung gewannen. Für die Aufrechterhaltung der Datenproduktion erfüllte die Antizipation wissenschaftlicher und praktischer Potenziale eine zentrale Funktion. Das präsentierte schweizerische Fallbeispiel zeigt, dass die Klimatologie unter dem Einfluss der Nationsbildung eine Transformation durchlief, die ihre institutionelle Verankerung, ihre Raumbezüge und ihre Epistemologie erfasste. A theme like “town and science” invites to comparative analysis, and suggests questions like these: Is the urban context a particularly fertile soil for the development of scientific thinking? Or rather the contrary? Is it fertile or barren under specific circumstances? Or does it favour a particular kind of scientific activity?General answers to such questions can hardly be found; still, they may provide case studies with a guiding perspective. Case studies, on the other hand, may lead to better understanding of (...) the implications of the general questions if not to answers. In the following I therefore try to read the emergence of Mesopotamian mathematics into the context of the “urban revolution” and the rise of states (c. 3300 to c. 2300 B.C.).Mesopotamian city states appeared in the late fourth millennium B.C., and were eventually absorbed in larger territorial states a thousand years later. Contemporary with the incipient state formation was the creation of a script and of genuine, coherent mathematics. Both were based on earlier accounting techniques, both were used by Temple officials for administrative purposes, and both were marked decisively by this application. At the same time, both presuppose modes of thought which are not produced directly by their application but only as mediated by a school system.In the mid‐third millennium, an autonomous scribal profession appears for the first time. At the same time emerge the first literary texts and the first “pure” mathematical problems (i.e., problems not directed at or following the pattern of genuine application). It seems as if the scribes, as soon as they were emancipated as a craft, tried out the range of their professional tools.Neither the use of writing for literary purposes nor the possibility to use numbers for “higher” computation were forgotten when the city states were absorbed in larger social systems. Both, however, were subsumed by the interest of the new territorial state, the former as a means to propagate royal ideology, the latter in the royal administration.The final section of the article compares this early Mesopotamian development with other instances of the “urban revolution” and with the development of scientific thought in the Ancient Greek city state and in the context of Medieval city communes. Marcus trouva dans le livre de Dingier, L’Effondrement de la science [Dingier 1926], des arguments importants en faveur de sa propre lut­te contre la crise scientifique et culturelle de l’époque, contre l’induction et le relativisme. Une correspondance s’engagea alors entre Dingier et Marcus. Elle fut poursuivie, après la mort de ce dernier en 1928, par son ami Friedlaender/Mynona. Marcus était conscient que Dingier refusait l’apriorisme kantien, il le voyait malgré tout comme un allié. Friedlander/Mynona critiqua sévèrement l’ambivalence de Dingier, en (...) particulier ses tendances irrationalis­tes. La constellation de ces trois auteurs a été jusqu’ici ignorée par les cher­cheurs, à l’exception de H. Lütdtke [Lüdtke 1989] qui a édité la correspondance Marcus-Dingler. Cet article, qui rassemble tous les documents connus ainsi que des inédits, permet d’exemplifier le débat intemporel entre un volontarisme empiriste et opportuniste d’une part, l’idéalisme kantien d’autre part. Life-world as the world of our concrete experiences is permanently modified by science. All experimental actions even of pure science are just as much scientific practice as a form of life-wordly practice. Above alt it is the technological consequences of science that reorganize life-world, and in such a way that we lack more and more understanding of what they realty are. This paper wants to show that several discrepancies and paradoxes, rising from this fact, contribute to structural changes in our (...) experiences of the world as well as of our own self. (shrink)
