Ludwig Binswanger (1881-1966) came from a distinguished Swiss psychiatrist dynasty which had run the internationally-renowned sanatorium Bellevue in Kreuz-lingen for generations. In 1907 he spent a year at the Zurich Burgh lzli under Bleuler and Jung, and indeed it was Jung who took Binswanger with him to Vienna that year for his first visit to Freud.

Rêve et existence occupe une place singulière à l'intérieur du corpus binswangerien, de ce vaste ensemble d'articles, conférences et ouvrages par lesquels la Daseinsanalyse avait déjà atteint son plein développement en 1954, au moment où parut la première traduction en français de ce texte. O presente artigo começa por mostrar até que ponto a influência cultural derivada da publicação, em 1927, de Sein und Zeit de Martin Heidegger contagiou também o campo psicopatológico, tendo sido especialmente Ludwig Binswanger (1881-1966) quem colheu e transferiu estes conteúdos filosóficos para o campo psiquiátrico. A autora salienta que enquanto Heidegger se ocupava com os aspectos ontológicos do ser, Binswanger se interessava particularmente pelos aspectos ônticos, factuais do ser, ou melhor, pela presença humana que se exprime (...) mediante a sua estrutura a priori de ser-no-mundo e de ser-com. O artigo mostra também até que ponto ao homo natura das ciências positivistas e da psicanálise Binswanger contrapoõe o homo existentia, superando dessa forma a dicotomia sujeito-objecto. Finalmente, coincidindo a nossa existência com a nossa possibilidade de ser no mundo, ou seja, de nos exprimirmos no mundo, o artigo mostra ainda até que ponto os conceitos de são e de doente constituem duas categorias que pertencem ao mesmo mundo, ou seja, ao mesmo modo de estar no mundo, pelo que da antropoanálise se pode dizer ela não fazer uma distinção de fundo entre a saúde e a doença. /// The present article seeks to demonstrate to what degree the publication of Heidegger's Sein und Zeit in 1927 had a cultural influence that extended to the field of psychopathology. It was particularly Ludwig Binswanger (1881-1966) who received and then transferred the work's philosophical contents into the domain of psychiatry. The author underscores the fact that, while Heidegger was concerned with the ontological aspects of being, Binswanger focused his interest on the ontical, factual dimension of being, i. e., on the human presence expressed in his a priori structure as being-in-the-world and as being-with. The article also demonstrates the degree to which the homo natura conceived in the positive sciences and psychoanalysis can be countered by Biswanger's concept of homo existentia, that overcomes the subject/object dichotomy. Finally, recognizing the coincidence of our existence with our possibility of being, i. e., of expressing the world, the article endeavors to show how the concepts of healthy and sick constitute categories belonging to the same world. It is thus that anthropoanalysis can be said to make no fundamental distinction between the two aforesaid concepts. (shrink)

The Swiss psychiatrist Ludwig Binswanger is best known for his existential analysis (Daseinsanalyse) presented in a series of case studies in the 1940s, but his existential anthropology of mania of the early 1930s has received less attention. He introduced this new existential science as a disciplinary hybrid of existential philosophy and clinical psychiatry, and, in doing so, transformed the genre of narrow medical case study into a broader discourse of philosophical anthropology. The very ambitiousness of his method, however, (...) tended to eclipse the individuality of his manic patient; its delineation of the conditioning structures of manic experience rendered the patient’s life-history and her functional state as secondary to these structures. La psiquiatría nace con el siglo XIX, la fenomenología con el XX. Desde el advenimiento de la segunda ha querido la primera ver en ella una vía para la superación del positivismo que la atenazaba desde su mismo origen. Uno de sus intentos más logrados fue el del psiquiatra Ludwig Binswanger a lo largo de los años veinte del pasado siglo. Recorrió en ese tiempo las Investigaciones lógicas de Husserl y ensayó su acercamiento a la psicología estructural. Proponemos (...) que una deficiente lectura de las posibilidades de la fenomenología ―comprensible en su prematuridad, desgraciada en su ímpetu anti-(neo)kantiano― impidió que reconociera su horizonte trascendental y así pudiera entrever caminos de acceso al mundo, a la persona y a su concreto sufrimiento. Para concluir presentamos el intento que supone el proyecto La mirada filosófica como mirada médica por recuperar aquella problematicidad y ahondar en una aproximación respetuosa al padecer, tal como aparece, sin violentarlo por el concepto. This paper focuses on one of the original moments of the development of the “phenomenological” current of psychiatry, namely, the psychopathological research of Ludwig Binswanger. By means of the clinical and conceptual problem of schizophrenia as it was conceived and developed at the beginning of the twentieth century, I will try to outline and analyze Binswanger’s perspective from a both historical and epistemological point of view. Binswanger’s own way means of approaching and conceiving schizophrenia within the (...) scientific, medical, and psychiatric context of that time will lead us to grasp the epistemological stakes at the origins of his project of reforming psychiatry by means of phenomenology. I will finally attempt to upgrade and update Binswanger’s project in light of the current reappraisal of phenomenology within the ongoing debate on psychopathology engaged by studies in the field of science and philosophy of mind. How much the sense of an event depends on the one who lives it? According to Erwin Straus, there are some phenomena, which impose their sense, and no one in the audience of a performance, for example, can see a wildfire without being afraid of and escaping from it. Binswanger criticizes such a conception and claims that the sense of the event depends on the freedom and the biography of the subject. In this paper we would like to replace (...) the issue in its phenomenological context and to establish that Straus as well as Binswanger are right and wrong but not of course in the same way. RésuméCet article examine la manière dont Michel Foucault se rapporte à la psychologie et à la psychopathologie phénoménologiques dans les années 1950, à la lumière des nouvelles sources documentaires que nous avons aujourd’hui à notre disposition. Notre contribution se concentre en particulier sur le manuscrit inédit de l’un des cours donnés par Foucault à l’université de Lille entre 1952 et 1954 : le cours sur « Binswanger et la phénoménologie ». L’analyse de ce cours, conçu par Foucault dans le (...) contexte d’une réflexion philosophique sur le problème anthropologique de la psychopathologie, nous permettra enfin de restituer à Foucault la place qui lui revient dans le domaine de la « philosophie de la psychiatrie ».
