:According to current interpretation of their ethics the Stoics incorporated in the theory of happiness the conception of attachment to oneself supposed to be changed into attachment to reason. This article aims to show that there is no textual evidence to corroborate this idea, and that, on the contrary, several texts and conceptual configurations tell against it. Dieser Artikel widerspricht der Deutung der sog. Schriftkritik am Ende des Phaidros, wie sie von den Vertretern der esoterischen Platoninterpretation vorgetragen wird. In esoterischer Sicht handelt es sich um den einzigen Abschnitt in den Dialogen, der ausdrücklich auf eine mündliche Lehre Platons hinweist. Der Hinweis soll in Sokrates' These liegen, im Unterschied zu anderen Autoren übertreffe der Philosoph seine Schriften mit wertvolleren Inhalten, die er nur mündlich lehre.Der Einwand gegen diese Interpretation lautet, daß Platon den inhaltlichen Wertunterschied nicht zwischen Schriften (...) und mündlichen Reden von Philosophen sieht, sondern zwischen kunstlosen Reden und Schriften konventioneller Autoren einerseits und kunstgerechten, d.h. dialektischen Reden und Schriften von Philosophen andererseits. The authors discuss Popper's and Kuhn's theories of science and consider whether these can explain the real course taken by the history of science, that is the real behaviour of scientists seen in an historical light. It has mainly to do with the problem of what criteria influence scientists in deciding on the acceptance of one of several possible theories. The authors postulate the necessity of introducing the category of "objective technological Erkenntnisinteresse" to help solve the problem. They illustrate this (...) by analysing the various models of the structure of Benzol, proposed by Kekulé, Claus and Ladenburg. According to the authors, Popper and Kuhn cannot explain the fact that the model of Kekulé was readily accepted. It can however be explained with the category of Erkenntnisinteresse. (shrink)

During sensory stimulation, visual cortical neurons undergo massive synaptic bombardment. This increases their input conductance, and action potentials mainly result from membrane potential fluctuations. To understand the response properties of neurons operating in this regime, we studied a model neuron with synaptic inputs represented by transient membrane conductance changes. We show that with a simultaneous increase of excitation and inhibition, the firing rate first increases, reaches a maximum, and then decreases at higher input rates. Comodulation of excitation and inhibition, therefore, (...) does not provide a straightforward way of controlling the neuronal firing rate, in contrast to coding mechanisms postulated previously. The synaptically induced conductance increase plays a key role in this effect: it decreases firing rate by shunting membrane potential fluctuations, and increases it by reducing the membrane time constant, allowing for faster membrane potential transients. These findings do not depend on details of the model and, hence, are relevant to cells of other cortical areas as well. (shrink)

In several of our articles we have drawn analogies between inattentional blindness paradigms and misdirection. Memmert however, has criticized this analogy and urged for caution in assuming too much of a close relationship between these two phenomena. Here we consider the points raised by Memmert and highlight some misunderstandings and omissions in his interpretation of our work, which substantially undermine his argument. Debating the similarities and differences between aspects of misdirection and inattentional blindness is valuable and has the potential to (...) highlight the utility of these two phenomena. However, it is important not to be misdirected by subtle differences between particular instances of each phenomenon, at the expense of failing to detect the opportunities that these phenomena present for extending our understanding of attention and awareness.
