O objetivo deste artigo consiste em aprofundar a intuição foucaultiana no livro As palavras e as coisas a respeito da máthêsis universalis como ciência geral da ordem e da medida, para tratar da Idade Clássica. Essa caracterização de Michel Foucault lhe permite afastar-se da percepção desta época pela lente do racionalismo, mecanicismo e matematização da natureza. Ao refletir sobre a ordem empírica dos seres, palavras e coisas pela relação entre máthêsis, taxinomia e teoria do signo, Foucault relativiza também certa percepção (...) da fenomenologia (husserliana) segundo a qual o racionalismo seria o solo fundante da Modernidade. The aim of this paper is to provide an appreciation of Michel Foucault’s The Order of Things reception, from the latest book by Ivan Domingues entitled “Foucault, a arqueologia e As palavras e as coisas: cinquenta anos depois” (Ed. UFMG, 2023). One of the scopes of the book is to examine the range of The Order of Things and its archaeological strategy to account for the presentation of the birth of human sciences, as well as its fragility and instability in (...) the face of a possible change in the disposition of knowledge. Or Episteme’s disposition, according to Foucault terminology, whose signs of change can be observed on the occasion of the advent, in the twentieth century, of Lacanian psychoanalysis, ethnology and structural linguistics. By privileging its repercussions, expansions and rectifications fifty years later, it is not intended to “correct” Foucault from an epistemological point of view, but to point out the fertility and power of his thoughts for posterity. It is about going through “fertile errors and anodyne truths” (DOMINGUES, 2020, p. 386). The bet is that possible gaps, errors or confusions identifiable by Foucault himself and by his critics at the time never invalidate the fertility of a discussion concerning human sciences, which were never the same after Foucault. O artigo mostra como Michel Foucault se afasta da referência à Revolução para pensar a política moderna, principalmente desde que aquela passou a ser interpretada pelos parâmetros estalinistas do Partido Comunista. Em contrapartida, ele indica que o ponto de partida da política é constituído pelas resistências à governamentalidade observáveis na atitude crítica, nas contracondutas e nas insurreições. Esses operadores conceituais procuram ressaltar não as teorias e os sistemas propositivos de uma política justa, e sim a perspectiva dos próprios governados quando (...) buscam desprender-se das obediênciasconsentidas, bem como do silenciamento diante de ações governamentais intoleráveis. Nesse sentido, a política tem como nova referência os processos de subjetivação a partir dos quais buscamos nos tornar completamente outros em um mundo inteiramente outro. A essas experiências políticas de dessubjetivação e transformação de nós mesmos, detectáveis principalmente nos movimentos de contracondutas, Foucault deduz uma espiritualidade política, irredutível às avaliações das lutas em termos de êxito ou fracasso. The article deals with the possibility of a critical history of truth in the thought of Michel Foucault, emphasizing its separation from the traditional relation between subject and knowledge of truth in favor of the articulation between historical practices and production of truth. It also emphasizes in which aspects his investigation is inserted in the critical project inaugurated by Kant and to what extent, paradoxically, it separates from it.O artigo versa sobre a possibilidade de uma história crítica da verdade no (...) pensamento de Michel Foucault, ressaltando seu distanciamento do vínculo tradicional entre sujeito e conhecimento da verdade em benefício da articulação entre práticas históricas e produção de verdade. No curso La société punitive, Michel Foucault indica até que ponto as lutas em torno do poder político produzem efeitos de realidade. Um deles é o nascimento de um novo sistema de penalidade no começo do século XIX. Ele surge de uma reconfiguração das lutas políticas em relação ao século XVIII. O conceito explicativo que fundamenta essa reconfiguração é o de ilegalismo, retomado mais tarde em Vigiar e punir. No século XVIII, ele designa um conjunto de transgressões de ordem política (...) que são toleradas e praticadas por diferentes agentes sociais, dentre eles a burguesia; no decorrer do século XIX, as lutas e resistências das camadas populares e trabalhadores contra o sistema político vigente deixam de ser toleradas e são tipificadas como infração à ordem estabelecida pela nascente penalidade burguesa. A transformação dos ilegalismos em ilegalidades é coetânea à elaboração de táticas de inserção da moral punitiva no interior do sistema penal. No artigo, percorremos a mudança estatuto das lutas políticas em torno do poder e em que sentido a nova penalidade não deixa de ser a continuidade da guerra social por outros meios. Enfatizamos, enfim, a importância do conceito de guerra civil introduzido nesse curso, tanto para a elaboração teórica da analítica do poder quanto pelo seu cruzamento com as lutas do presente em torno das práticas judiciárias. A constituição do sujeito na investigação do último Foucault geralmente é conhecida pela perspectiva de sua estética da existência. Tal abordagem deve-se sobremaneira à leitura dos dois últimos volumes de Histoire de la sexualité (1984). No entanto, o presente artigo aponta que nos cursos no Collège de France intitulados Subjectivité et verité (1981) e L’herméneutique du sujet (1982) outra leitura pode ser elaborada. A relação entre subjetividade e verdade evidencia-se como central em seu pensamento e seus desdobramentos são apresentados a (...) partir das diferenças estabelecidas entre filosofia e espiritualidade, das articulações entre cuidado de si e conhecimento de si, conhecimentos úteis e inúteis, cuidado de si e conversão a si, ascese e verdade. RESUMO O artigo estuda, em um primeiro momento, os processos de sujeição e subjetivação nos trabalhos de Michel Foucault e sua relação com a dupla dimensão, moral e material, da governamentalidade. Se em sua dimensão moral a produção de sujeições tem como contraponto os processos éticos de subjetivação, já em sua dimensão material predomina o governo biopolítico do meio vital no qual populações são reguladas e sujeitadas em detrimento das possibilidades de subjetivação. A ênfase do governo biopolítico é especialmente observável (...) entre as populações deslocadas em busca de sobrevivência. Em um segundo momento evoca-se, para além de Foucault, uma modalidade de população problematizada como objeto de recorrente normalização nos últimos decênios, constituída pelos migrantes de sobrevivência. O estudo percorre os traços do governo biopolítico dessa população, especialmente as reconfigurações dos processos de sujeição que a regulam. Conclui-se que ela apresenta poucas possibilidades de empreender processos de subjetivação como resistência às formas de sujeição operadas pela governamentalidade biopolítica. ABSTRACT At first, the article studies the processes of subjection and subjectivation in the works of Michel Foucault and their relationship with the double dimension, moral and material, of governmentality. If in its moral dimension the production of subjections has as its counterpoint the ethical processes of subjectivation, in its material dimension what predominates, in turn, is the biopolitical government of the vital means in which populations are regulated and subjected to the detriment of the possibilities of the subjectivation. The emphasis of the biopolitical government is especially noticeable among displaced populations seeking survival. In a second moment, besides Foucault, a modality of population that has been problematized as object of recurrent normalization in the last decades, made up by survival migrants, is evoked. The study goes through the traits of the biopolitical government of that population, especially the reconfigurations of the subjection processes that regulate it. We conclude that it presents few possibilities to undertake subjectivation processes as resistance to the forms of subjection operated by the biopolitical governmentality. (shrink)

Pretende-se analisar como, no pensamento de Michel Foucault, a investigação em torno da ética do cuidado de si pode ser lida como desdobramento da ideia de governamentalidade, problematizada a partir de 1978; procura-se indicar, ainda, que essa ética do cuidado de si é a condição do governo político dos outros, na leitura da tradição socrática, o que possibilita uma revisitação da política. Mas, desde a avaliação que Foucault faz da figura de Sócrates em relação à política ateniense até seu diagnóstico (...) da política contemporânea, essa revisitação tem sido conflitante, pelo menos quando se trata da constatação da maneira como as instituições políticas cuidam dos cidadãos. Esse conflito beira ao paradoxo, posto que, ao mesmo tempo em que a biopolítica afirma uma política da vida, no sentido de proporcionar seu cuidado, preservação, longevidade, observa-se também a atuação de uma política sobre a vida, enquanto vida controlada e submetida ao biopoder. Essa discrepância entre dispositivos discursivos e práticas efetivas demonstra uma ausência do cuidado da verdade, entendido aqui como coerência entre o que se diz e o que se faz. Enquanto desdobramento do cuidado de si, o cuidado da verdade pode ser interpretado como uma chave de leitura fundamental para o diagnóstico dos riscos e perigos que ameaçam recorrentemente a vida humana. This article deals with the importance that Foucault attributes to the Critic of Pure Reason, in his book, The Order of Things . According to Foucault, the Critic occupies a symbolic place because of the problematic of finitude that this work inaugurates in the history of philosophy. First of all, Kant thinks about finitude from itself, and this differentiates him from Descartes, to whom this concept is referred to the infinite. Then, the Kantian finite transcendental subject is not an empirical (...) one, in contrast to the modern analyses of finitude, which confuse the empirical with the transcendental. In this respect, the Critic does not belong to the Classical Age any longer, because it bypasses the representation. But it cannot be included in the modern analyses of finitude either, such as those of the naturalistic positivism, the dialectic, and the phenomenology. Foucault thus suggests that the Critic brings with itself the possibility of an anthropology, in the sense it is a thought that imparts a transcendental value to the empirical contents, even if it does not belong to them. No presente artigo pretendo apontar, primeiramente, a relação entre diagnóstico do presente e atitude crítica a partir do pensamento de Michel Foucault. Na sequência, indicarei que a noção de atitude crítica é ao mesmo tempo parceira e adversária da governamentalidade, no sentido de que ela designa uma arte plural de não ser governado de determinada maneira e pelos mesmos agentes, sem, contudo, se posicionar fora do jogo governamental. Mostrarei ainda que as lutas políticas contra a saturação do jogo governamental podem (...) ser pensadas como um desdobramento da atitude crítica. Finalmente, procurarei demonstrar que a tentativa cotidiana de viver e refletir democraticamente diante de um exercício autoritário do poder, como se pôde vislumbrar especialmente nos últimos anos no Brasil, pode ser entendida como um gesto de ressignificação da atitude crítica. A problematização deste campo de análise não foi diretamente tratada por Foucault, mas tem se tornado um objeto de estudo irrenunciável para o diagnóstico político de nosso presente. (shrink)

O artigo tem como objeto principal o curso de Michel Foucault no Collège de France, Subjectivité et vérité, ministrado em 1980-1981 e editado em 2014. Pretende-se mostrar de que maneira e mediante quais argumentos Foucault chega à afirmação de que a relação entre sujeito e verdade na experiência antiga dos aphrodisia é da ordem da incompatibilidade. Na pederastia grega os atos sexuais e seus prazeres foram considerados obstáculos para o acesso à verdade e para a constituição do sujeito ativo. No (...) entanto, o confisco da experiência sexual legítima no interior da reconfiguração do matrimônio romano, bem como a suspeita crescente em torno dos atos e prazeres, provocaram dois processos: a subjetivação dos aphrodisia, o que resultou em uma relação constante do sujeito com sua experiência sexual; e a objetivação do desejo, no sentido de que ele deixa de ser somente um elemento intempestivo e incontrolável situado ao lado da natureza, passando a ser algo problemático e objeto de conhecimento. Ainda que na Introdução aos dois últimos livros de Histoire de la sexualité Foucault escreva que pretende fazer a história do homem de desejo na cultura pagã antiga, o artigo sugere que não é propriamente nessa formação histórica que pode ser identificada sua emergência, e sim no monaquismo cristão dos séculos IV e V, objeto de seu livro inacabado Les confessions de la chair. Pelo menos no domínio da experiência sexual, o homem de desejo não teria surgido na erótica masculina grega ou no matrimônio romano, mas na sexualidade solitária do monaquismo cristão. (shrink)

RESUMO Neste artigo, objetivamos explorar os cruzamentos entre as lutas empreendidas por Michel Foucault no início dos anos setenta e o desenvolvimento de conceitos, como os de sobressaber e sobrepoder no curso "Théories et institutions pénales", a fim de entender como a insurreição dos saberes sujeitados, mencionada em "Il faut défendre la société", pode ser também identificada nos movimentos operários e em outras formas de luta, diante do excesso de saber posto ao serviço da concentração e burocratização do poder. Propomo-nos (...) analisar ainda os desdobramentos teóricos da dinástica do saber, tratada em "Théories et institutions pénales" e em passagens de "Dits et écrits", principalmente pela sua diferença em relação à leitura althusseriana do conceito de ideologia. Nesse sentido, pretendemos indicar até que ponto o permanente afastamento foucaultiano do conceito de ideologia no começo dos anos setenta permitiu-lhe isolar a ideia de dinástica do saber como uma primeira delimitação da analítica do poder. ABSTRACT In this paper we aim to explore the intersections between the struggles undertaken by Michel Foucault in the early seventies and the development of concepts such as over-learn and over- power in the course "Théories et Institutions pénales", in order to understand how the insurrection of subjected knowledges, mentioned in "Il faut défendre la société", can also be identified in labor movements and in other forms of clash, before the excessive knowledge put at the service of concentration and bureaucratization of power. We propose further examination on the theoretical developments of the dynastics of knowledge mentioned in "Théories et Institutions pénales" and in passages from "Dits et écrits", mainly because of its difference from Althusser's reading of that ideology concept. We intend to show to what extent the permanent removal of Foucault's ideology concept in the early seventies allowed him to isolate the dynastics of knowledge idea as a first delimitation of the analytics of power. A partir da análise do curso ministrado por Michel Foucault em 1979, Nascimento da Biopolítica, este artigo apresenta o neoliberalismo como uma racionalidade de governo que impregna tanto a lógica de atuação do Estado quanto a maneira de viver dos sujeitos. A indissociabilidade entre estes dois âmbitos de atuação tem como efeito principal o enfraquecimento da democracia, embora Foucault pouco trate dela neste curso. O Estado regido pela lógica do mercado e o indivíduo produzido como sujeito de interesse são considerados (...) as duas faces do neoliberalismo, em relação às quais é possível propor o exercício da atitude crítica. In 1939, the influential psychophysicist S. S. Stevens proposed definitional distinctions between the terms ‘number,’ ‘numerosity,’ and ‘numerousness.’ Although the definitions he proposed were adopted by syeveral psychophysicists and experimental psychologists in the 1940s and 1950s, they were almost forgotten in the subsequent decades, making room for what has been described as a “terminological chaos” in the field of numerical cognition. In this paper, I review Stevens’s distinctions to help bring order to this alleged chaos and to shed light on (...) two closely related questions: whether it is adequate to speak of a number sense and how philosophers can make sense of the claim by cognitive scientists that numbers are perceptual entities. Moreover, I offer further support to Stevens’s distinction between numerosity and numerousness by showing that they are relational properties that emerge through different relationships between agents and their environments. The final conclusion is that, by adopting Stevens’s distinctions, numbers do not need to be seen as perceptual entities, since the so-called number sense is better described as a sense of numerousness. The aim of this chapter is to discuss the relevance that emotions can play in our epistemic life considering the state of the art of the philosophical debate on emotions. The strategy is the one of focusing on the three main models on emotions as evaluative judgements, bodily feelings, and perceptions, following the fil rouge of emotion intentionality for rising questions about their epistemic functions. From this examination, a major challenge to mainstream epistemology arises, the one that asks to provide (...) prominence to the epistemic agent and to her affects. This chapter discusses these implications, also providing an overview of the many alternatives available nowadays in epistemology, arguing for an open, comprehensive, and interdisciplinary approach to emotions in knowledge. In this paper, I focus on the concept of embeddedness as the background against which eros is a force and a power in and through interactions. To go beyond an internalist account of eros, I engage in a dialogue with some philosophical accounts of desire from an enactive perspective.This enables me to shed light on the location of the embodied tension as “in-between” lovers and “all-around” them. Crucial to this tensional account of embedded eros is the intertwining between self and (...) others’ becomings in processes of participatory sense-making. Through participatory sense-making lovers make their worlds, creating new ways of being and knowing in the ensemble. I advance some steps towards an ethics of embedded eros where, I claim, the cultivation of the space in-between and all-around lovers is the key to avoid the traps of a degenerated form of eros. One important limitation of the current renditions of interpretivism is that its emphasis on the moral dimension of sport has overlooked the aesthetic dimension lying at the core of this account of sport. The interpretivist’s failure to acknowledge and consider the aesthetic implicitly distances this realm from the moral. Marcia Muelder Eaton calls this distancing the separatist mistake. This paper argues that interpretivism presupposes not only moral but also aesthetic principles and values. What it sets out to demonstrate is that (...) interpretivism is an integralist, or nonseparatist, account of sport, one in which ethical and aesthetic values are not exclusive. Making explicit and specifying interpretivism’s combined moral-aesthetic approach to sport not only helps to better distinguish the whole range of values that make up sport as well as their interconnection but also encourages sportspeople to pursue more coherent sport and, thus, more enriching lives. It is common in contemporary sport to liken the notion of the team to that of the family. That is, the family is used to evoke team life. Portraying the team as a family usually implies a positive evaluation. Despite its prevalence, the team as a family equation has not been analyzed in the sport philosophy literature. Thus, the purpose of this article is twofold. First, it explores whether the team is to be equated with the family. To discuss the (...) nature of the family and the team, I draw together the work of several sport philosophers with that of Laura Wildemann Kane. Second, and considering what characterizes the team, this article investigates whether teammates have special responsibilities to one another by virtue of their relationship and the value attached to it. I propose that the team as a family equation does not align with the constitution of these two social groups and that teammates have special responsibilities to one another, but such responsibilities are different from those observed in the family. A factibilidade da hipercognição está alicerçada na concepçãode cognição sustentada pelo externalismo ativo, em especial o de Andy Clark, para o qual o ambiente possuicaracterísticas relevantes o suficiente para desempenhar um papel protagonista no processo de cognição,uma vez que (...) os humanos já seriam, por natureza, peritos na tarefa de incorporar material não biológico emsuas rotinas físicas e cognitivas. A simbiose entre humanos e máquinasseria algo que decorreria naturalmente, sobretudo na acepção de que os processos cognitivos seriamdependentes de ajuda externas. No contexto da Convergência Tecnológica NBIC, essa simbiose é o quepossibilita a hipercognição. (shrink)

O objetivo deste artigo é analisar a postura antirrepresentacionista da abordagem incorporada da cognição em sua tentativa de fazer frente às possíveis limitações da ciência cognitiva clássica. Tal abordagem, propagada a partir da década de 1980, teve suas raízes na perspectiva ecológica de Gibson, com a noção de affordances, podendo uma versão mais acentuada ser identificada no texto Radical embodied cognitive science, de Chemero, em que o autor procura apontar a desnecessidade das representações mentais para a compreensão da cognição, tendo (...) como apoio a noção de affordances, porém numa perspectiva distinta de Gibson. Ao apresentar a distinção conceitual de affordances entre os autores em questão, pretende-se, por fim, discutir a contribuição epistemológica da abordagem radical de cognição incorporada de Chemero para o futuro da ciência cognitiva. Este artigo é uma apresentação dos fundamentos da teoria modular desenvolvida por Jerry A. Fodor e uma reflexão sobre seus principais desafios. A noção de modularidade da mente de Fodor, por um lado, procura superar as insuficiências metodológicas e epistemológicas do associacionismo e do localizacionismo a respeito das explicações da estrutura e do funcionamento mental; por outro lado, é uma oposição à postura culturalista de Vygotsky, para o qual as funções superiores da mente, como a cognição, são produtos artificiais, culturais. (...) A psicologia cognitiva de Chomsky converteu esse produto "artificial" em "natural", postulando a existência de módulos inatos para desempenhar funções cognitivas específicos. Com base nessa ideia de Chomsky, Fodor procura explicar a mente como um conjunto de módulos. No entanto, sua principal contribuição para as ciências cognitivas é a apresentação da arquitetura mental em dois níveis e a afirmação da existência de módulos centrais responsáveis pelas atividades cognitivas superiores, como criatividade, reflexão ou imaginação. In this paper, we introduce an enactive account of loving as participatory sense-making inspired by the “I love to you” of the feminist philosopher Luce Irigaray. Emancipating from the fusionist concept of romantic love, which understands love as unity, we conceptualise loving as an existential engagement in a dialectic of encounter, in continuous processes of becoming-in-relation. In these processes, desire acquires a certain prominence as the need to know (the other, the relation, oneself) more. We build on Irigaray’s account of (...) love to present a phenomenology of loving interactions and then our enactive account. Finally, we draw some implications for ethics. These concern language, difference, vulnerability, desire, and self-transformation. (shrink)

In this paper, I analyse a specific kind of loneliness that can be experienced in the networked life, namely “extended loneliness”. I claim that loneliness—conceived of as stemming from a lack of satisfying relationships to others—can arise from an abundance of connections in the online sphere. Extended loneliness, in these cases, does not result from a lack of connections to other people. On the contrary, it consists in the complex affective experience of both lacking and longing for meaningful relationships while (...) being connected to many people online. The recursive interaction with a digital assistant in a smart flat is my key example for defining the contours of this specific kind of loneliness that emerges when hyperconnectivity becomes pervasive in the user’s daily-life. In this paper, we provide a pragmatist conceptualization of affective habits as relatively flexible ways of channeling affectivity. Our proposal, grounded in a conception of sensibility and habits derived from John Dewey, suggests understanding affective scaffoldings in a novel and broader sense by re-orienting the debate from objects to interactions. We claim that habits play a positive role in supporting and orienting human sensibility, allowing us to avoid any residue of dualism between internalist and externalist conceptions of affectivity. We provide (...) pragmatist tools for understanding the environment's role in shaping our feelings, emotions, moods, and affective behaviors. However, we contend that in addition to environment, the continuous and recursive affective transaction between agent and environment are also crucially involved. We claim that habits are transformative, which is especially evident when we consider that emotions are often the result of a crisis in habitual behavior and successively play a role in prompting changes of habits. The final upshot is a conceptualization of affective habits as pervasive tools for feelings that scaffold human conduct as well as key features in the transformation of behaviors. (shrink)

This innovative new volume analyses the role of emotions in knowledge acquisition. It focuses on the field of philosophy of emotions at the exciting intersection between epistemology and philosophy of mind and cognitive science to bring us an in-depth analysis of the epistemological value of emotions in reasoning. No entanto, Tyler Burge rejeitou essa tese, e Putnam veio a adotar a posição de Burge. A rejeição de Burge está apoiada na distinção entre crenças de dicto e crenças de re. Despite society’s increasing sensitivity toward green production, companies often struggle to find effective communication strategies that induce consumers to buy green products or engage in other environmentally friendly behaviors. To add clarity to this situation, we investigated the effectiveness of negative versus positive message framing in promoting green products, whereby companies highlight the detrimental versus beneficial environmental consequences of choosing less versus more green options, respectively. Across four experiments, we show that negatively framed messages are more effective than positively framed (...) ones in prompting consumers to engage in pro-environmental behaviors. More importantly, we find that anticipated shame is the emotion responsible for this effect. Furthermore, both environmental concern and the type of product promoted serve as moderators; thus, the mediating role of anticipated shame is attenuated when environmental concern is low and the product is a luxury one. Finally, we discuss the theoretical and managerial implications of our work, along with its limitations and some directions for future research. (shrink)

In this paper, I discuss the intrinsic value of truth from the perspective of the emotion studies in virtue epistemology. The strategy is the one that looks at epistemic emotions as driving forces towards truth as the most valuable epistemic good. But in doing so, a puzzle arises: how can the value of truth be intrinsic and instrumental? My answer lies in the difference established by Duncan Pritchard between epistemic value and the value of the epistemic applied to the case (...) of subjective motivations to knowing. I argue that the value of truth is intrinsic as epistemic value and that this is not only compatible with the idea that truth can have different kinds of instrumental values but also that the subjective value of truth, disclosed by epistemic emotions, can make the value of truth stronger if regulated within patterns of virtuous enquiry. The aim of the chapter is to discuss and evaluate the epistemic role of emotions in participatory sense-making, assuming 4Ecognition as background. I first ask why could emotions be beneficial for the collective processes of knowledge, especially discussing Battaly and arguing for a conceptualisation of emotions as socially extended motivations in virtue epistemology; then, I discuss participatory sense-making, both conceptually and phenomenologically, arguing for a fundamental role played by emotions in boosting epistemic cooperation and determining the quality of social bonds. (...) I advocate their specific function in epistemic cooperation. Epistemic cooperation is what brings about the generation of a shared meaning in participatory sense-making and thus, since emotions function as socially extended motivations, they boost the relationships among the agents, bonding them to the aims of their epistemic community. In this paper we suggest an understanding of the self within the conceptual framework of situated affectivity, proposing the notion of an affectively extended self and arguing that the construction, diachronic re-shaping and maintenance of the self is mediated first by affective interactions. We initially consider the different variations on the conception of the extended self that have been already proposed in the literature. We then propose our alternative, contextualising it within the current debate on situated affectivity. While the idea (...) that we exploit the external environment in order to manage our affective life is now rather widespread among philosophers, its potential consequences for and connections with the debate on the self remain underexplored. Drawing on James’ intuition of the “material self”, which clearly connects the self and the emotions in agency, and broadly envisioning an extension of the self beyond its organismic boundaries, we propose our pragmatist conception of the self: an affectively extended self that relies on affective artifacts and practices to construct its identity extended beyond skin and skull.
