Lester Embree is very concerned with the issue of culture in his philosophical thinking. Besides his preoccupation with the cultural disciplines, he explores the notions of culture in Schutz and Gurwitsch. He even brings up the term “phenomenology of culture.” With inspirations from Embree, the present paper intends to explore culture as a phenomenological theme. Starting with elaboration on the concept of cultural object in both Husserl and Schutz, the paper focuses on the question of cultural difference and universalism. I (...) contend that despite apparent differences between Schutz and Husserl, there is close positioning between them. In the final part of my paper, I make a deeper reflection on the problem of cultural difference.Lester Embree está muy preocupado con el tema de la cultura en su pensamiento filosófico. We begin by providing an overview of Duncan Pritchard's epistemological disjunctivist account of perceptual knowledge, as well as the theoretical advantages of such an account. Drawing on that account, we present and motivate our own Pritchardean epistemological disjunctivist account of memory knowledge. After distinguishing different sorts of memory and the different roles that memory can play in knowledge acquisition, we set out our account and argue that (...) the case for epistemological disjunctivism enjoys parity with the case for epistemological disjunctivism of perceptual knowledge. We also consider objections to our account. The first is from Joe Milburn and Andrew Moon, who argue against a general epistemological disjunctivism of memory on the basis of differences in memory types. In this paper, I attempt to demonstrate the role emotions play in the reflexive process of the rational knowledge of God in Anselm’s Monologion and Proslogion. Special attention has been paid to the Proslogion, containing the renowned “unum argumentum”, which itself was commonly understood as a special form of Anselm’s methodology of the “sola ratione” for the knowledge of God. It could be seen as a significant argument against the emotions as affective expression of the soul, disqualifying the relevance of (...) the “affectus”. Introduced in the Monologion, the emotion is there a basic concept in the argument for the knowledge of God, and it assumes its full shape in the Proslogion. The aim of my contribution is to give an insight in the cognitive attitude, in respect to “affectus” as a “leading power” of the soul, as it unites with “ratio” and “fides” for the knowledge of God as a whole in the Proslogion. An energy efficiency scenario (Joint Institute for a Sustainable Energy and Environmental Future) demonstrates that an energy future built on the use of cost-effective, high-efficiency technologies is clearly within the grasp of South Korea and would justify a nuclear power moratorium with significantly lower carbon dioxide emissions. This is a promising result, especially because applications of other sustainable energy options, such as renewables, decentralized technologies, material recycling/reuse, ecologically based land use planning, forest conservation, sustainable agriculture, and redirection of economic development (...) toward an environment-friendly industrial base, are not included in the analysis. Here lies one of the most fundamental policy choices of the newcentury: Will we build a sustainable energy and environmental future, or will we send forward the burdens and risks of a policy regime that is unwilling to value the future beyond the satisfaction of short-term interests and convenience? It is a critical time for South Korean policy making. (shrink)

Spécialiste de la pensée arabo-musulmane, plus particulièrement de la pensée de Ghazali, Farid Jabre mit à profit cet approfondissement pour envisager l'ouverture de leur legs à l'humanisme contemporain. Il procéda à l'analyse critique des catégories de pensée et des critères de vérité de la raison arabe. Il remania et réhabilita la terminologie philosophique arabe. Il fixa les conditions et les procédés de l'éclatement et du renouveau de la pensée philosophique arabo-musulmane en la soumettant à la raison parvenue à l'âge de (...) l'herméneutique. Mais sa principale contribution fut l'élaboration du projet de la création d'un courant de pensée philosophique humaniste d'expression authentiquement arabe. (shrink)

At the beginning of the 9th century, anatomists aimed at detaching themselves from a mere classifying and descriptive approach to establish a philosophic science studying form patterns and relationships. Organic forms were part of a research program, grounded on how their components were related from a structuralist perspective, as it is for Étienne and Isidore Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, founders of teratology. Résumé Dans cet article, je défends la signification contemporaine de la pensée de Hegel sur la subjectivité et la dialectique en impliquant Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel et Hans-Georg Gadamer dans un dialogue, puis en clarifiant les caractéristiques de l'esprit et du concept. La théorie de la subjectivité de Hegel et sa pensée sur la dialectique font face à de nombreuses critiques. L'un de ces critiques est Gadamer ; cependant, la philosophie de Gadamer est, en fait, assez proche de celle de (...) Hegel. Je prends la relation Hegel-Gadamer comme une illustration de la pertinence et de l'influence de Hegel. Je démontre ensuite l'importance contemporaine de Hegel en analysant les caractéristiques de l'esprit et du concept. Enfin, je propose que l'esprit absolu et le concept de Hegel restent significatifs. (shrink)

One challenge involved in integrating so-called ‘non-Western’ philosophies into ‘Western’ philosophical discourse concerns the fact that non-Western philosophical texts frequently differ significantly in style and approach from Western ones, especially those in contemporary analytic philosophy. But how might one bring texts that are written, for example, in a literary, non-expository style, and which do not clearly advance philosophical positions or arguments, into constructive dialogue with those that do? Also, why might one seek to do this in the first place? This (...) paper addresses these questions by means of a case study involving the Daoist classic, theZhuangzi.L’un des défis posés par l’inclusion des soi-disant philosophies «non-occidentales» dans le discours de la philosophie «occidentale» a trait au fait que plusieurs textes philosophiques non-occidentaux diffèrent de façon significative, en termes de style et d’approche, des textes occidentaux, principalement ceux issus de la philosophie analytique contemporaine. Comment établir un dialogue constructif entre des textes écrits de façon littéraire, qui n’ont pas l’allure d’un exposé et qui n’avancent pas clairement des positions ou des arguments philosophiques et des textes qui, au contraire, prennent la forme d’un exposé avançant des positions ou des arguments? Pourquoi, de prime abord, voudrait-on ouvrir un tel dialogue? Cet article pose ces questions par le biais de l’étude du cas du classique taoïste, leZhuāngzǐ. (shrink)

The application of financial market criteria to the art world has profoundly changed the reception of works of art. It is channelled through a private circuit of auction houses, galleries and collections, which monopolise the modalities of exhibition to the public and arbitrarily select works and artists, often conforming the taste of the spectators essentially to market criteria. This phenomenon is particularly important in the case of photography, which still remains, especially in some countries, on the fringes of the cultural (...) system of museums and large exhibition spaces. I happen to believe that though human experiences are to be characterized as pluralistic they are all rooted in the one reality. I would assume the thesis of pluralism but how could I maintain my belief in the realism? There are various discussions in favor of realism but they appear to stay within a particular paradigm so to be called “internal realism”. In this paper I would try to justify my belief in the reality by discussing a special use of (...) indexicals. I will argue for my indexical realism by advancing the thesis that indexicals can be used as an inter-agentic referential term. Three arguments for the thesis will be presented. The first argument derives from a revision of Kaplan-Kvart’s notion of exportation. Their notions of exportation of singular terms can be analyzed as intra-agentic exportation in the context of a single speaker and theirs may be revised so as to be an inter-agentic exportation in the context of two speakers who use the same indexicals. The second is an argument from the notion of causation which is specifically characterized in the context of inter-theoretic reference. I will argue that any two theories may each say “this” in order to refer what is beyond its own theory. Two theories address themselves to ‘this’ same thing though what ‘this’ represents in each theory turn out to be different objects all together. The third argument is an argument which is based on a possibility of natural reference. Reference is used to be taken mostly as a 3-place predicate: Abe refers an object oi with an expression ej. The traditional notion of reference is constructive and anthropocentric. But I would argue that natural reference is a reference that we humans come to recognize among denumerably many objects in natural states: at a moment mi in a natural state there is a referential relation among objects o1, o2, o3, . . , oj, o j+1, . . which interact to each other as agents of information processors. Natural reference is an original reference which is naturally given and to which humans are passive as we derivatively refer it by using ‘this’. (shrink)

Le but de cette these consiste a degager l'influence constitutive de l'heritage kantien dans l'elaboration contemporaine du paradigme cosmopolitique en ethique internationale. Cependant, une certaine ambivalence caracterise les ecrits politiques de Kant, oscillant entre un realisme politique et un idealisme moral. L'interpretation rawlsienne du foedus pacificum, quant a elle, reconduit une conception fondamentalement etatiste du projet de paix kantien. Face au fait du pluralisme, Rawls tente d'accommoder certaines preoccupations communautariennes au detriment de l'individualisme normatif et de l'egalite politique des citoyens (...) constitutifs de la democratie liberale. Nous soutenons, contre Rawls, qu'une perspective cosmopolitique d'obedience kantienne ne peut accorder une telle preseance indue aux droits collectifs au prejudice des droits fondamentaux des individus. ;Par contraste, nous soutenons la justification normative d'une theorie particuliere de la democratie cosmopolitique fondee sur la notion de souverainete differenciee dont les representants les plus importants sont David Held et Thomas W. Pogge. Ce modele de gouvernance globale sans gouvernement s'inspire du foedus pacificum kantien qui concoit la possibilite d'une communaute cosmopolitique sans Etat mondial. Nous affirmons que la theorie de la souverainete differenciee, fondee sur le principe de l'autonomie, permet de concilier le fait du pluralisme avec l'universalisme moral des droits fondamentaux. ;Une telle perspective cosmopolitique s'appuie sur une approche pragmatique qui tient compte des criteres de plausibilite historique et institutionnelle. De sorte qu'elle tente d'articuler les prescriptions normatives a partir des caracteristiques empiriques de la globalisation. Or, une analyse attentive du phenomene de la globalisation atteste d'un changement de paradigme en relations internationales qui bouleverse les parametres conceptuels en relations internationales. Ce changement de paradigme libere de nouvelles possibilites conceptuelles en ce qui a trait aux notions traditionnelles de la souverainete de l'Etat et de la democratie. C'est dans la foulee de ces transformations, a la fois structurelles et philosophiques, que l'ideal regulateur d'un partage plus equitable de la souverainete, audela et en deca des bornes territoriales de l'Etat, parait plausible. Dans l'esprit de certaines intuitions kantiennes, il est possible d'elaborer une conception de la citoyennete cosmopolitique et de la sphere publique transnationale capable de surmonter, d'une certaine facon, le deficit de democratie et de representation electorale qui caracterisent presentement les changements inherents a la globalisation. ;Cette these tente de demontrer en quoi le projet de paix kantien constitue la genese philosophique du modele de gouvernance cosmopolitique, fondee sur la theorie de la souverainete differenciee, nous permettant d'envisager certaines propositions de reformes institutionnelles en relations internationale.
