Modern society is post-secular: It reflects a broad spectrum of religious and ideological convictions, which flow into the normative self-understanding debates of a deliberative public. The state, on the other hand, is ideologically neutral and in this sense secular. In this respect, the influence of religious convictions on state action and especially on its legislature is increasingly in need of justification. The article discusses the self-image as well as the chances and limits of religious convictions in state-related political consultation, using (...) the example of the participation of theologians in the German Ethics Council. This participation is at the same time an impressive case study for the relationship between morality and law. (shrink)

Otto Weininger’s controversial book Sex and Character, first published in Vienna in 1903, is a prime example of the conflicting discourses central to its time: antisemitism, scientific racism and biologism, misogyny, the cult and crisis of masculinity, psychological introspection versus empiricism, German idealism, the women’s movement and the idea of human emancipation, the quest for sexual liberation, and the debates about homosexuality. Nietzsche's unpublished notes are extraordinary in both volume and interest, and indispensable to a full understanding of his lifelong engagement with the fundamental questions of philosophy. This volume includes an extensive selection of the notes he kept during the early years of his career. They address the philosophy of Schopenhauer, the nature of tragedy, the relationship of language to music, the importance of Classical Greek culture for modern life, and the value of the unfettered pursuit of truth and knowledge which (...) Nietzsche thought was a central feature of western culture since it was first introduced by Plato. They contain startling and original answers to the questions which were to occupy Nietzsche throughout his life and demonstrate the remarkable stability and consistency of his fundamental concerns. We argue that Löb's Theorem implies a limitation on mechanism. Specifically, we argue, via an application of a generalized version of Löb's Theorem, that any particular device known by an observer to be mechanical cannot be used as an epistemic authority (of a particular type) by that observer: either the belief-set of such an authority is not mechanizable or, if it is, there is no identifiable formal system of which the observer can know (or truly believe) it to be the (...) theorem-set. This gives, we believe, an important and hitherto unnoticed connection between mechanism and the use of authorities by human-like epistemic agents. (shrink)

We study the variety of Löb algebras , the algebraic structures associated with formal propositional calculus. Among other things, we prove a completeness theorem for formal propositional logic with respect to the variety of Löb algebras. We show that the variety of Löb algebras has the weak amalgamation property. Some interesting subclasses of the variety of Löb algebras, e.g. linear, faithful and strongly linear Löb algebras are introduced.

We present a semantic proof of Löb's theorem for theories T containing ZF. Without using the diagonalization lemma, we construct a sentence AUT T, which says intuitively that the predicate autological with respect to T (i.e. applying to itself in every model of T) is itself autological with respect to T. In effect, the sentence AUT T states I follow semantically from T. Then we show that this sentence indeed follows from T and therefore is true.

Von Heraklit und Parmenides, Platon und Aristoteles bis zu Kant und dem Deutschen Idealismus und daruber hinaus bis heute hat die Philosophie sich als filosofia a solo, nicht aber als filosofia in compagnia verstanden. Der Einzelne steht vor ihr, zu dem kein Zweiter und Dritter tritt. Der auf ihn gerichtete Blick ist ein denkender und zugunsten des Denkens wertender. Weil die Philosophie es am liebsten mit der reinen Geistigkeit halt, gilt ihr Vernunft als selbstgenugsam: Sie hat hinreichend mit sich selbst (...) zu tun. Sieht Philosophie in der Denkkraft den ganzen, weil, wie sie emphatisch sagt, den wahren und wesentlichen Menschen und somit sich selbst als das Humanum, dann ist der Weg beschritten, das Denken mit dem Zudenkenden einswerden zu lassen. Daraus erwachsen vielfaltige Spekulationen des innigsten geistigen Einsseins, sei es in der Einheit von Sein und Nichtsein oder von Gott und Mensch. Krisen, heißt es manchmal, erfordern klare Ansagen: Bei Behauptungen wissen wir, woran wir sind. Vermutungen hingegen sind unklar und stehen der Übernahme von Ver­ant­wor­tung entgegen. In diesem Essay wird mit den Mitteln der Sprachphilosophie ge­zeigt, dass vermutende Sprechakte für die Krisenkommunikation in der Corona-Pandemie richtig und wichtig sind. Weder sind Vermutungen anfälliger für Unklarheit als andere Sprechakte noch sind sie besser dazu geeignet, Verantwortung abzuweisen. Im Gegen­teil: In einer Situation, die durch Unsicherheit geprägt ist, sind Vermutungen besonders wertvoll für das (...) Kommunizieren ungesicherter Hypothesen. (shrink)

W historii filozofii występują dwa przeciwstawne ujęcia ludzkiego istnienia. 1. Filizofie esencjalistyczne, które upatrują istotę człowieka w spójności i harmonii Jego bytu, równowadze zewnętrznej i wewnętrznej, w zgodności jednostki ze sobą i otoczeniem. Od czasów Platona postulowały one utożsamienie się jednostki z funkcją pełnioną przez nią w społeczeństwie i państwie. Dla myśli filozoficzno-politycznej, określającej warunki harmonijnego współżycia ludzi w społeczeństwie było ważne wyodrębnienie przede wszystkim stałych składników istnienia tworzących tożsamość bytu człowieka oraz regularność i przewidywalność jego zachowań. 2. W innym (...) nurcie filozoficznej refleksji nad człowiekiem widzi się swoistość istnienia w egzystencjalnym ruchu samotworzenia się jednostki, w jej nieustającym stawaniu się człowiekiem w procesie stałego przezwyciężania nieodłącznych od egzystencji napięć. Myśl egzystencjalna (np. Pascal, egzystencjaliści, ale podobne intuicje można też spotkać u innych filozofów) traktuje istnienie człowieka jako strukturalne "transcendowanie" - przekraczanie przez wolny wybór jednostki przedmiotowo-tożsamościowego składnika egzystencji, jej harmonii i równowagi. Tożsamość jednostki (także jej roli społecznej) jawi się w tej optyce jako zjawisko ontologicznie względne, wtórne w stosunku do swobodnego określania przez jednostkę globalnego sensu swego życia. Z kolei, na płaszczyźnie ontycznej człowiek istnieje, wedle koncepcji egzystencjalnej, w dwóch równoległych niesprowadzalnych do siebie sposobach istnienia. Uwzględnienie tego faktu wymaga dualnego patrzenia na człowieka zarówno jako na tożsamość (określonej osobowości i roli społeczno-zawodowej) i jako na transcendencję - egzystencjalny proces samotworzenia się jednostki. Filozofia polityczna uważa za najważniejszy tożsamościowy aspekt istnienia, zaś filozof-moralista interesuje się przede wszystkim aspektem transcendencji, wolności jednostki do ustanawiania sensu swego istnienia. Każdy z tych punktów widzenia powinien akceptować dwoistość egzystencjalnej sytuacji człowieka i nie rościć pretensji do posiadania globalnej wiedzy o człowieku i jego obowiązkach. Zarówno polityk-ustawodawca mający na uwadze harmonię i stabilność społeczną (tożsamość ról społecznych, stałość zachowań jednostki, przewidywalność jej działań), jak i filozof-moralista ma swoje dobrze uzasadnione racje. Rozwojowi kultury służy utrzymanie na zasadzie komplementarności obu odmiennych poglądów na człowieka i zachowanie między nimi pewnych napięć, które nigdy całkowicie usunąć się nie dadzą. (shrink)

Den Beteiligten des Politikbetriebs einschließlich Wählern, Aktivisten und Spitzenpolitikern fehlt häufig der grundlegende Sachverstand für die jeweiligen politischen Entscheidungen. Selbst Experten verstehen gesellschaftliche Mechanismen kaum und können deren Auswirkung kaum vorhersagen. Nur auf einfachste und unstrittige politische Behauptungen ist Verlass. Teilweise rührt das daher, dass politisches Wissen schwer zu erlangen ist, und teilweise daher, dass der Einzelne keinen ausreichenden Ansporn hat, es zu erlangen. This article presents both the legal regulations concerning lobbying in Poland and an evaluation of lobbying practices. It makes reference to the results of sociological research conducted among Polish members of Parliament, professional lobbyists and journalists who cover parliamentary issues. The research was conducted in cooperation with the S. Batory Foundation’s Anti-Corruption Program from May to July 2008.

Die alttestamentliche Gottesrede kennt in ihren unterschiedlichen Spielarten ein wechselseitiges Verweisverhältnis zwischen Gott und Mensch. Darin begegnet die Perfektion Gottes als Grenzbestimmung und das Imperfekte als Modus der Darstellung Gottes. In der Konsequenz lassen sich weder der Mensch noch Gott in den Vorstellungen des Perfekten oder des Imperfekten allein angemessen erfassen.

ZusammenfassungWir möchten der Charter on Medical Professionalism, die wir für vorbildlich halten, eine durchdachte Anreicherung hinzufügen. Wir beginnen mit einer skeptischen Note gegen das verbreitete theoretische Vorurteil, die wichtigsten Probleme im Gesundheitssystem seien Gerechtigkeitsprobleme und diese seien theoretisch gut beherrschbar. Unter Bezug auf Norman Daniels, der John Rawls’ Theorie der politischen Gerechtigkeit auf die Bewertung und Gestaltung von Gesundheitssystemen anwendet, sowie auf die biomedizinische Ethik, die von Beauchamp und Childress vertreten wird, analysieren wir das komplexe Verhältnis zwischen moralischer Integrität von (...) Strukturen und Organisationen einerseits und natürlichen Personen, die in ihnen arbeiten, andererseits. Anschließend interpretieren wir die Charta als eine Spezifizierung der ärztlichen professionsmoralischen Verantwortung auf mehreren Ebenen, die Tugend- und Organisationsethik verklammern. (shrink)

The present paper undertakes a hermeneutic analysis of the hitherto little investigated preface of Theodore Metochites᾽ Paraphrase of the natural scientific works of Aristotle. Based on a problematic quotation at the very beginning of the proem, the article shows that paraphrase does not only mean, for Metochites, the language-specific clarification of the obscure Aristotelian texts but mainly the elucidation and simplification of the relationship of physics to the rest of the philosophical curriculum, as well as of the interconnection between Aristotle‘s (...) separate treatises of natural sciences. The preface proves to be an indirect, i.e. encoded testimony for the exegetical competition of Theodore Metochites with his coeval George Pachymeres and the most prominent ancient paraphraser of Aristotle, namely Themistius. In this paper, we show how to construct for a given consistent theory U a $$\varSigma ^0_1$$ Σ 1 0 -predicate that both satisfies the Löb Conditions and the Kreisel Condition—even if U is unsound. We do this in such a way that U itself can verify satisfaction of an internal version of the Kreisel Condition.
