    Defensor pacis.Marsilius of Padua & Cary J. Nederman - 2001 - Columbia University Press.
As Cary J. Nederman writes in the foreword to this new edition, "Marsilius continues to speak to many of the salient issues of modern political life, expressing his doctrines in a language that has resonance and relevance. Whether in addressing the role of citizenship as a buffer between individual and community, or in explicating the foundations of religious toleration, the _Defensor pacis_ (and Marsilius' other writings) affords a distinctive theoretical perspective that rivals that of any of the great thinkers of (...)

From "Defensor Pacis" to "Defensor Minor": The Problem of Empire in Marsiglio of Padua.C. J. Nederman - 1995 - History of Political Thought 16 (3):313.
When read as Marsiglio asks us to read it, the Defensor minor looks a great deal less like a change of heart on its author's part than an extension and application of the principles that he had formulated fifteen years earlier in the Defensor pacis. The inconsistency some scholars have detected turns out to be based on a sort of false expectation about Marsiglio's political theory, namely, that it must ultimately advocate a single system of government or form (...)

  5. Defensor Rationes: Essays in Honour of Colin Cheyne.James Maclaurin (ed.) - 2012 - Springer.
Rationis Defensor is a volume of previously unpublished essays celebrating the life and work of Colin Cheyne. It celebrates his dedication to rational enquiry and his philosophical style. It also celebrates the distinctive brand of naturalistic philosophy for which Otago has become known. Contributors to the volume include a wide variety of philosophers, all with a personal connection to Colin, and all of whom are, in their own way, defenders of rationality.

La ley en el "Defensor Minor" de Marsilio de Padua.Pedro Roche Arnas - 1995 - Revista Española de Filosofía Medieval 2:91-100.
Defensor Minor follows the basic objective of the works of Marsilio de Padua: the critique of the theocratic conception of papal power. Some of the aspects here studied include the nature of power, the differences and relationships between divine law and human law and the coactive character of both.

The series of Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought is in the process of putting into the hands of students useful, inexpensive editions of the most important works of Western political thought, especially suitable for classroom use. Here we have another welcome addition to the series, the minor texts of Marsiglio of Padua previously unavailable in the English language.

The Glorious Excess of Peace in Marsilius of Padua's Defensor Pacis.Richard A. Lee Jr - 2019 - Theoria 66 (159):23-51.
In Defensor Pacis Marsilius of Padua grounds the legitimacy of the kingdom, or the state, on the peace that rule provides the citizens. Looking at Aristotle’s claim that the civitas strives to be like an animal in which all parts in the right proportion for the sake of health, Marsilius argues that ‘the parts of the kingdom or state will be well disposed for the sake of peace [tranquilitas].’ Marsilius goes on to define peace as the agreeable ‘belonging together’ (...)

The article has as point of departure the idea that for Saint Augustine biological life is intimately linked with spiritual life; moreover, biological life itself is nothing but a metaphor of the real life. It is also presented that for Saint Augustine life is ultimately a Christological matter. The basic Augustinian anthropological idea of the human being as mendicus Dei is also developed, starting from the text of 1 Cor 4, 7, and developing the image of the human being as (...)

Las paradojas de la Ley en Marsilio de Padua: formalismo y/o naturalismo jurídico en el Defensor Pacis / The Paradoxes of Law in Marsilio of Padua: Formalism and/or Legal Naturalism in Defensor Pacis.Francisco Bertelloni - 2016 - Revista Española de Filosofía Medieval 23:55.
The Defensor pacis offers the possibility of solving the contradiction between formal law and material law. Marsilius of Padua proposes a reconciliation between harmonisation of law as formal positive rule and law as a material norm. If that antinomy admits conciliation, the Defensor pacis can be said to reconcile successfully two heterogeneous grounds of law, which in this case contradict each other only in appearance.

Marsilius of Padua and Peter of Abano: the scientific foundations of law-making in Defensor Pacis.Alessandro Mulieri - 2018 - British Journal for the History of Philosophy 26 (2):276-296.
This article shows that a forgotten source of Marsilius’ scientia of law-making in the Defensor Pacis is the Lucidator, the main astrological work of Peter of Abano. A compared analysis of these two works demonstrates that the theories of experientia and scientia that Marsilius considers necessary to make laws in the first dictio of the Defensor Pacis entirely draw on Peter of Abano’s views on the epistemological status of ‘the science of the stars’. It is shown that the (...)

Character and Community in the "Defensor Pacis": Marsiglio of Padua's Adaptation of Aristotelian Moral Psychology.C. J. Nederman - 1992 - History of Political Thought 13 (3):377.
Although it has become commonplace to regard Marsiglio of Padua's Defensor Pacis (completed in 1324) as a quintessential work of medieval Aristotelian political theory, this view has been challenged for various reasons in recent years. Some scholarship has pointed to the superficial quality of Marsiglio's appeal to Aristotle's authority. Others have emphasized Marsiglio's decisive reliance on sources and doctrines which were quite at odds with his overtly Aristotelian commitments. A revealing measure of the depth of his Aristotelianism is perhaps (...)

El "positivismo jurídico" en el "Defensor Pacis" de Marsilio de Padua.Martín Oliveira - 2012 - Revista Española de Filosofía Medieval 19:159-170.
Many scholars of Medieval Political Philosophy have suggested that Marisilius of Padua’s Defensor Pacis defends a «positivist» approach to law. In this article we try to show that such claim is wrong. We begin by sketching a brief summary of Marilius’ legal doctrine and then we turn to many scholarly pieces that have found it either in favor of or against «juridical positivism» in the Defensor Pacis. By reviewing the most recent theories on «juridical positivism» we argue that (...)

Controversy over the Power Between the Papacy and the Empire in the light of Marsilius’ of Padua Defensor pacis.Anna Białas - 2010 - Peitho 1 (1):145-159.
The most famous medieval controversy over the power and the temporal dominion took place between the papacy and the empire. One of the greatest advocates of the imperial domination was Marsilius of Padua, the author of an original work that demonstrated the advantage of acknowledging the emperor’s superiority over the Pope’s. The Defensor pacis, written between 1319 and 1324, was devoted to the dispute on such sovereignty issues as proving that the Pope should be subordinate to the Emperor, and (...)
