Wir betrachten hier jenen Teil der Grundlagenforschung, der die "intui­ tive" oder "inhaltliche" Mathematik, d. h. das, was ein gew6hnlicher Mathematiker unter Mathematik versteht, systematisch beschreibt und analysiert. Im deskriptiven Teil wird die informale Mathematik in einer formal en Sprache (z. B. der der Mengenlehre) neu formuliert. Eine solche Sprache hat, verglichen mit der Sprache der informalen Mathematik, ein sehr eingeschr~nktes Vokabular und eine vollkommen exakte Grammatik; dadurch wird naturlich die Pr~zision erh6ht und der Blick von Unwesentlichem befreit. Im Gegensatz (...) zu einer weitverbreiteten Ansicht, die weiter unten diskutiert wird, ist die Neuformulierung (die wie jede Beschreibung eines intuitiv erfa~ten Gegenstandes wesentlich von unserer Auffassung seiner Natur abh~ngt) nur ein Hilfsmittel der Grundlagenforschung: es handelt sich n~mlich darum, die Bedeutung von S~tzen der informalen Mathematik richtig wiederzugeben und nicht deren syntaktische Struktur; denn der ~u~eren Form nach haben die formale und die informale Sprache (glucklicherweisel) wenig gemeinsam. Auch sollte man bemerken, da~ die durch die Umformulierung erzielte Pr~zision zwar die technische Entwick­ lung f6rdert, aber kaum geeignet ist, Schwierigkeiten zu beseitigen, die aus Unzul~nglichkeiten der ursprunglichen Begriffe entstehen (gerade das Gegenteil ist der Fall: durch Nachdenken uber informale Begriffe werden wir zu einer guten Formalisierung gefuhrt). In den wohlbekannten "Krisen" (siehe z. B. Teil A, Abschnitt 1 weiter unten) ruhrten die Widerspruche von durchaus expliziten Prinzipien (Axiomen, Regeln) her, so da~ diese Schwierigkeiten nichts mit ungenugender formaler Pr~zision zu tun hatten; das Problem lag vielmehr darin, unter verschiedenen, formal pr~zisen Prinzipien die gultigen herauszufinden. This paper explicates Husserl’s usage of what he calls “radical Besinnung” in Formale und transzendentale Logik. Husserl introduces radical Besinnung as his method in the introduction to FTL. Radical Besinnung aims at criticizing the practice of formal sciences by means of transcendental phenomenological clarification of its aims and presuppositions. By showing how Husserl applies this method to the history of formal sciences down to mathematicians’ work in his time, the paper explains in detail the relationship between historical critical Besinnung (...) and transcendental phenomenology. Ultimately the paper suggests that radical Besinnung should be viewed as a general methodological framework within which transcendental phenomenological descriptions are used to criticize historically given goal-directed practices. A clear, compact, technical presentation of the traditional topics of symbolic logic. The propositional calculus, which Lorenzen develops for ten truth functions, is formulated in six axioms to enable comparison with intuitionism. An important part of the book is Lorenzen's "establishment" of the axioms of Brouwer's intuitionistic calculus by proving their universal admissibility for any calculus. If the and's and if's of these axioms are interpreted as metalinguistic terms used in stating inference rules for object calculi, then no matter what (...) calculus the axioms are added to, no new theorems become provable. In the process of this "establishment" of what he calls "effective logic," Lorenzen makes use of nine different kinds of implication.-J. B. B. (shrink)

This volume in the series ORBIS ACADEMICUS: Problemgeschicten der Wissenschaft in Dokumenten und Darstellungen, marks the first attempt to give a comprehensive history of logic since the monumental work of Prantl. In sharp contrast with that work, it does not share the opinion, voiced by Kant, that logic has no history after Aristotle; it uses the results of very extensive research into the history of ancient and scholastic logic, especially during the last 25 years; most important of all, it is (...) written with full knowledge of modern mathematical logic which was only beginning in Prantl’s time, and finally it also includes an account of Hindu logic. Questo articolo ricostruisce la dimensione formale dell’ontologia elaborata da Max Scheler fra il 1908-1909 ed il 1922, nel corso cioè della sua prima fase produttiva d’interesse fenomenologico. Particolare attenzione è riservata alla struttura “architettonica” della prima ontologia formale scheleriana, composta da un trivium di sotto-discipline formali. L’autore elabora in questo modo la distinzione, sostenuta dai maggiori rappresentanti dei primi Circoli tedeschi di fenomenologia realista, fra un’ontologia formale “pura” che indaga la regione formale analitica dell’“oggettività in generale” (...) e ontologie formali generali interessate alle forme o categorie oggettuali dell’essere reale, organizzato in sommi generi materiali. L’articolo mostra inoltre come l’approccio scheleriano all’ontologia formale apra percorsi di recupero e rielaborazione di un’idea tipicamente pre-moderna: l’ontologia è disciplina che tratta anche dell’ordine sovra-predicamentale delle relazioni trascendentali.
