The original definition of a technical term, the paper argues, should not be altered without a good reason. This notion is applied to the conception of illocutionary acts suggested by Alston, which markedly differs from the conception originally introduced by John L. Austin. Alston appears to agree with the argument; at least, he does attempt to justify his re-definition. The paper argues, however, that the reasons he gives fail.

Gricean communication is communication between utterers and their audiences, where the utterer means something and the audience understands what is meant. The weak transmission idea is that, whenever such communication takes place, there is something which is transmitted from utterer to audience; the strong transmission idea adds that what is transmitted is nothing else than what is communicated. We try to salvage these ideas from a seemingly forceful attack by Wayne Davis. Davis attaches too much significance to the surface structure (...) of sentences of the type ‘S communicates the belief (desire …) that p to A’ by assuming that the communicated entity is denoted by the grammatical object following ‘communicates’. On our proposal, what is communicated in all Gricean cases is a thought. And since S communicates the thought that p to A only if S means that p and A understands what S means, the thought that p will be transmitted from S to A. (shrink)

A scholarly confusion of tongues, or, is promising an illocutionary act? Technical terms, I argued elsewhere, should not be re-defined without a profound reason; for such a re-definition furthers misunderstanding and is therefore undesirable. If my argument is on the right track, then we have reason to acknowledge the original definition of ‘illocutionary acts’ established by John L. Austin; any subsequent re-definition, unless it is specially justified somehow, must count as a terminological mistake. I use this argument, in order to (...) proceed against what appears to me a highly problematic terminological situation, namely, the present existence of a double-digit number of different definitions of the term "illocutionary act." Against my argument, I met the objection that the co-existence of several different intensional definitions of ‘illocutionary acts’ eventually is not very problematic, given the alleged fact that the extension of the term is indisputable. In this paper, I argue that the objection fails, because its central premise is false: William P. Alston, Bach & Harnish and John R. Searle have very different opinions as to whether, for instance, promising is an illocutionary act, even though promises are commonly supposed to be extremely obvious cases. Additionally, I consider the objection that the term "illocutionary act" is indispensable as a means of referring to those various things it is used for; I discard this objection by demonstrating that, and how, at least the accounts under consideration in this paper could easily do without the term. The idea motivating their account, Cappelen and Lepore (C&L) say in Insensitive Semantics (2005), is that semantic content is context invariant, and that all colleagues who take, or even consider, different accounts are just on the wrong track. It is the purpose of their book to disprove all alternative accounts by way of an argument ‘by elimination’. The conclusion they arrive at is that their own account must be accepted by everyone as the only game in town at the end (...) of the day . The present paper is intended to examine this conclusion; its more significant findings are these. Firstly, C&L’s account is not, as they suggest, strictly minimalist, but in fact just a moderate version of contextualism. Secondly, prematurely associating semantical incompleteness and context sensitivity, they overlook some possible alternatives to their own view, among them at least one that is attractive. Thirdly, their argument ‘by elimination’ has an inductive structure, but is inexhaustive, and therefore inconclusive. Fourthly, for several different reasons, their attempts to reject arguments in favour of semantical incompleteness do not work. Finally, their contention that arguments in favour of semantical incompleteness employ metaphysical premisses for semantical conclusions rests on a faulty interpretation of these arguments. In the light of these findings, it is concluded that the central argument of Insensitive Semantics fails. (shrink)

This abridged and revised edition of the original book (Springer-Verlag Vienna, 2001) offers the only comprehensive history and documentation of the Vienna Circle based on new sources with an innovative historiographical approach to the study of science. With reference to previously unpublished archival material and more recent literature, it refutes a number of widespread clichés about "neo-positivism" or "logical positivism". Following some insights on the relation between the history of science and the philosophy of science, the book offers an accessible (...) introduction to the complex subject of "the rise of scientific philosophy" in its socio-cultural background and European philosophical networks till the forced migration in the Anglo-Saxon world. The first part of the book focuses on the origins of Logical Empiricism before World War I and the development of the Vienna Circle in "Red Vienna" (with the "Verein Ernst Mach"), its fate during Austro-Fascism (Schlick's murder 1936) and its final expulsion by National-Socialism beginning with the "Anschluss" in 1938. It analyses the dynamics of the Schlick-Circle in the intellectual context of "late enlightenment" including the minutes of the meetings from 1930 on for the first time published and presents an extensive description of the meetings and international Unity of Science conferences between 1929 and 1941. The chapters introduce the leading philosophers of the Schlick Circle (e.g., Hans Hahn, Otto Neurath, Rudolf Carnap, Philipp Frank, Felix Kaufmann, Edgar Zilsel) and describe the conflicting interaction between Moritz Schlick and Otto Neurath, the long term communication between Moritz Schlick, Friedrich Waismann and Ludwig Wittgenstein, as well as between the Vienna Circle with Heinrich Gomperz and Karl Popper. In addition, Karl Menger's "Mathematical Colloquium" with Kurt Gödel is presented as a parallel movement. The final chapter of this section describes the demise of the Vienna Circle and the forced exodus of scientists and intellectuals from Austria.The second part of the book includes a bio-bibliographical documentation of the Vienna Circle members and for the first time of the assassination of Moritz Schlick in 1936, followed by an appendix comprising an extensive list of sources and literature. Im "Bruno" bemüht sich Schelling um eine allgemeinverständliche Erläuterung der Grundgedanken seiner Identitätsphilosophie und stellt sie daher nach dem Vorbild eines platonischen Dialogs dar. Das Beispiel der Verschmelzung von Grundgedanken einer monistischen Konzeption im Sinne Spinozas mit der Ideenlehre Platons in ihrer neuplatonischen Ausprägung, das hierbei im Hintergrund steht, fand Schelling in den Schriften des Renaissancephilosophen Giordano Bruno, der dem Dialog auch den Namen gab. Schellings Ziel liegt darin, die alten Theorien über die Struktur der Materie und die Bildung des (...) Kosmos neu zu etablieren, um so die epistemologische Sackgasse der modernen, mechanistischen Wissenschaft zu überwinden. Der Dialog "Bruno" (1802) erschien ein Jahr nach der Veröffentlichung von Schellings "Darstellung meines Systems der Philosophie" (PhB 524b), die eine neue Phase in seiner denkerischen Entwicklung eröffnete, die Epoche des sogenannten Identitätssystems (1801–1809). Mit ihr sollte die Dichotomie von Natur- und Transzendentalphilosophie und deren Prinzipien (Produktivität der Natur einerseits, Spontaneität des Ich andererseits), wie sie Schelling (1775–1854) in seinen Schriften der vorhergehenden Jahre entwickelt hatte, aufgehoben werden und beide in einem höchsten Prinzip ihre Einheit finden. Dieses wird 1801 bestimmt als "absolute Vernunft", die weder subjektiv noch objektiv zu denken ist, sondern als bestimmungslose "absolute Indifferenz" das identische Wesen alles Seienden darstellt. "Die Sätze der Sittenlehre dürfen nicht Gebote sein, weder bedingte, noch unbedingte", sondern sie müssen "das wirkliche Handeln der Vernunft auf die Natur ausdrücken". So umriß Schleiermacher (1768-1834) seine radikale Kritik an der von Kant vertretenen Ethik des Sollens: nicht in der Beugung unter das allgemeine Gebot der Pflicht, sondern in der tätigen Verwirklichung der in jedem Menschen angelegten sittlichen Individualität erkannte er das Wesen der Ethik.

"One must assume we are all familiar with what is commonly called 'education.'" This is how Schleiermacher begins his famous 1826 lecture on the Art of Education. But in proceeding further-and unlike Rousseau or Locke before him-Schleiermacher carefully avoids assuming that education is primarily about a return to nature or about "soundness" of mind and body. Education is instead an ethical and political undertaking and a pragmatic art whose ultimate object and morality has differed greatly over time. It is exercised (...) as a form of practical influence by the older generation on the younger: "A significant part of the activity of the older generation extends toward the younger," Schleiermacher reasons, and it "is more complete and perfect the more it is governed by an idea of what should happen-the more it has an exemplar to guide its action-the more it is an art." This book offers these and other insights on education-long canonical in Central and Northern Europe-for the first time for an English audience.
