Technical delusions are highly significant for the diagnosis of schizophrenia. What can we learn from the content and the formal aspects of this kind of delusion about the primary schizophrenic experiences underlying the technical delusion and about its meaning and purpose for the patient? In a phenomenological investigation of six schizophrenics, comparing their experiences in technical delusion with the normal experience of technical phenomena, I describe the patient's relationship to himself, to his world, and to others and the modalities of (...) his hallucinatory perceptions. Finally, I discuss the effect of the technical delusion on the patient's relationship to reality. (shrink)

_Requiem for the Ego_ recounts Freud's last great attempt to 'save' the autonomy of the ego, which drew philosophical criticism from the most prominent philosophers of the period—Adorno, Heidegger, and Wittgenstein. Despite their divergent orientations, each contested the ego's capacity to represent mental states through word and symbol to an agent surveying its own cognizance. By discarding the subject-object divide as a model of the mind, they dethroned Freud's depiction of the ego as a conceit of a misleading self-consciousness and (...) a faulty metaphysics. Freud's inquisitors, while employing divergent arguments, found unacknowledged consensus in identifying the core philosophical challenges of defining agency and describing subjectivity. In _Requiem_, Tauber uniquely synthesizes these philosophical attacks against psychoanalysis and, more generally, provides a kaleidoscopic portrait of the major developments in mid-20th century philosophy that prepared the conceptual grounding for postmodernism. Alfred North Whitehead (1861-1947) was a prominent English mathematician and philosopher who co-authored the highly influential Principia Mathematica with Bertrand Russell. Originally published in 1922, this book forms the follow-up volume to "The Principles of Natural Knowledge" (1919) and "The Concept of Nature" (1920). In it, Whitehead puts forward an alternative theory of relativity, one which goes against the heterogeneity of Einstein's later theories in deducing that 'our experience requires and exhibits a basis in uniformity'. Sie geht da bei von der Erwagung aus, daB wir zwar die in der Geschichte ange hauften Gedanken kennen miissen, urn nicht ins Bodenlose zu versinken, dabei aber nicht vergessen diirfen, daB die Betrachtung der Geschichte fUr uns nur insoweit von Wert ist, als sie zur (...) Losung der Gegenwarts probleme beitragt. Daher folgt auf den historischen, durch verschiedene Erganzungen erweiterten Hauptteil ein ganz neu bearbeiteter Abschnitt, der die gewonnenen Ergebnisse in einer kritischen Wiirdigung zusammen faBt und sich auch bemiiht, einige MiBverstandnisse zwischen der Natur rechtslehre und dem Rechtspositivismus zu bereinigen.
