Wenn Künstliche Intelligenz (KI) Texte generieren kann, was sagt das darüber, was ein Text ist? Worin unterscheiden sich von Menschen geschriebene und mittels KI generierte Texte? Welche Erwartungen, Befürchtungen und Hoffnungen hegen Wissenschaften, wenn in ihren Diskursen KI-generierte Texte rezipiert werden und Anerkennung finden, deren Urheberschaft und Originalität nicht mehr eindeutig definierbar sind? Wie verändert sich die Arbeit mit Quellen und welche Konsequenzen ergeben sich daraus für die Kriterien wissenschaftlicher Textarbeit und das Verständnis von Wissenschaft insgesamt? Welche Chancen, Grenzen und (...) Risiken besitzen KI-Textgeneratoren aus Sicht von Technikethik und Technikfolgenabschätzung? Und welche Kriterien sind für einen ethisch bewussten Umgang mit KI-Textgeneratoren im Bildungskontext anzulegen? Diese und ähnliche Fragen verdeutlichen die Komplexität und Tragweite der Herausforderung, die der stetig wachsende und zunehmend selbstverständliche Einsatz von KI-Textgeneratoren für das zukünftige Arbeiten mit und an Texten mit sich bringt. Hierbei kristallisieren sich Problematiken heraus, die sich an ein breites Spektrum von Disziplinen wenden, deren spezifischen Diskurse in diesem Band beleuchtet werden. (shrink)

Anerkennung soll die Leerstelle ausfüllen, die mit dem Zusammenbruch metaphysischer Systeme aufgetreten ist. Die Ethik sozialer Anerkennung wird damit aber mit Erwartungen überfrachtet. Durch technologische Veränderungen verändern sich permanent die Statusbestimmungen: Die Autonomie des Menschen konkurriert mit künstlich-intelligenten Maschinen, die Leidensfähigkeit mit der des Tieres, die Individualität mit der digitalen Selbstinszenierung und die Geschöpflichkeit mit der technologischen Selbstvergöttlichung. Die Beiträge suchen nach Bedingungen sozialer Anerkennung, die nicht zirkulär ausgehandelt werden können, sondern Kategorien einbringen, die auch von Menschen verwendet werden, wenn (...) sie von Gott sprechen. SummaryTo defend the common sense against solipsism Jean-Paul Sartre points out the evidence of the Other beyond an epistemological perspective. But his phenomenological framework leaves no room for an ontological evidence of the Other but only for an evidence of the Other in thinking. As the gap between the In-Itself and the For-Itself is not a real one, but only a construction of the For-itself Sartre calls “Nothing”, the difference between the Other and me does not really exist, too. It (...) is overlooked mostly that Emmanuel Levinas also uses a kind of ontological proof in order to give evidence of the Other. Furthermore he combines his thinking of Otherness with theology by his thinking of infinity. In order to avoid an elimination of the subject by the infinite supremacy of the Other, the article suggests that condescendence of the Other is necessary. This article points out the theological implications of Otherness and compares the result with christian thinking of Trinity and Christology.ZusammenfassungUm den Common Sense gegen den Solipsismus zu verteidigen, betont Jean-Paul Sartre die Evidenz des Anderen unabhängig von einer epistemologischen Perspektive. Allerdings lässt sein phänomenologischer Ansatz nicht wirklich Raum für eine ontologische Evidenz des Anderen, sondern nur für dessen Evidenz im Denken. Weil nämlich für Sartre die Differenz zwischen Ansich und Für-sich keine reale ist, sondern nur eine Konstruktion des Für-sich, die Sartre »Nichts« nennt, kann die Differenz zwischen mir und dem Anderen ebensowenig existieren. Es wird weithin übersehen, dass Emmanuel Levinas auch den Typ des ontologischen Beweises verwendet, um die Evidenz des Anderen herauszuheben. Außerdem ist sein Denken des Anderen mit theologischen Sachgehalten kombiniert über den Gedanken der Infinität. Um aber die Selbstauflösung des Subjekts in die Übermacht des Anderen zu vermeiden, schlägt der hier vorliegende Artikel vor, die Kondeszendenz des Anderen als notwendig mitzudenken. Die theologischen Implikationen von Alterität werden in diesem Artikel herausgehoben und mit einer christologischen bzw. trinitätstheologischen Perspektive verglichen. (shrink)

ZUSAMMENFASSUNGMaterialisten in der Bewusstseinsphilosophie sprechen von der Subjektivität als von einem »Homunkulus«, von einem Konstrukt des Gehirns. Wäre Subjektivität tatsächlich nur eine Illusion, so hätte dies auch religionsphilosophische Konsequenzen. Der vorliegende Beitrag zeigt aber anhand von Thomas Metzingers Konzeption, dass weder die Kritik am Subjektivitätsphänomen klar formuliert ist noch Metzingers Repräsentationstheorie die Homunkulus-These rechtfertigt. Vielmehr lässt sich sogar mit Metzingers eigener Theorie ein Modell der Auferweckung des Subjekts formulieren.SUMMARYMaterialists in the philosophy of mind usually call subjectivity a »homunculus«, that is (...) an illusionary construction of the brain. If this illusion of the I was true, it would also have serious consequences for religious thinking. Damit überschreitet dieser Ansatz die Alternative deduktiver und induktiver Ethik-Ansätze. Die Kirche ist eine Anerkennungsgemeinschaft. Ihr theologisches Wesen ist politisch. Im Anschluss an Axel Honneth kann in ihr ein Vorrang des Rechts vor Liebe und Solidarität begründet werden. Mit Dietrich Bonhoeffer kann die Anerkennungstheorie Honneths für die Kirche weiterentwickelt werden.

Mit Hilfe einer logischen Analyse des Schleiermacherschen Begriffs »schlechthinnige Abhängigkeit von Gott« und der leiblichen Erfahrung der erkenntnismäßigen Selbstentzogenheit des menschlichen Erkenntnissubjekts ergibt sich der Gedanke der Allwissenheit Gottes folgerichtig, weil ansonsten die Abhängigkeit von Gott nicht schlechthinnig sein kann. Christi Himmelfahrt enthält die Ambivalenz, dass Christus einerseits universal abwesend ist, dass er andererseits aber von allen Sachverhalten und Gegenständen als abwesend repräsentiert wird. Diese Ambivalenz von Präsenz und Abwesenheit wird mit Rudolf Ottos Konzeption des Heiligen als »Präsenz eines Unnahbaren« in Vergleich gebracht. Der Aufsatz entwickelt Ottos Konzeption phänomenologisch weiter und skizziert die Konsequenzen dieser Ambivalenz für theologisches Denken.SUMMARYThis essay attempts to portray the specific character (...) of the ascension of Christ for systematic Theology. This article offers an argument against the equal state of embryosinhuman right. It uses S.A. Kripke's theory of reference and defends it against newer objections. According to Kripke's premise about the necessity of origin the article describes a moral dilemma since embryos are treated as individual humans. Ethics has many more resources to defend embryos against the claims of scientific research.

The opposition between creation and evolution is invalid because humans are creators of new life, such as synthetic life or artifical intelligence. Thus the problem ofhow it is possible that reality arises at all needs a new answer. The phenomenological framework of this volume combines scientific and theological knowledge to offer a new theory of reality.

Sentences with disjunction in the scope of a universal quantifier, Every A is P or Q, tend to give rise to distributive inferences that each of the disjuncts holds of at least one individual in the domain of the quantifier, Some A is P & Some A is Q. These inferences are standardly derived as an entailment of the meaning of the sentence together with the scalar implicature that it is not the case that either disjunct holds of every individual (...) in the domain of the quantifier, \Every A is P &\Every A is Q. As we show, this derivation faces a challenge in that distributive inferences may obtain in the absence of plain negated inferences. We address this challenge by showing that on particular assumptions about alternatives, a derivation of distributive inferences as scalar implicatures can be maintained without in fact necessitating plain negated inferences. These assumptions accord naturally with the grammatical approach to scalar implicatures. We also present experimental data that suggest that plain negated inferences are not only unnecessary for deriving distributive inferences, but might in fact be unavailable. (shrink)

Ethical statements and position papers on genome editing often refer to “the public” that should get involved, and a public discussion that should take place. It is not self-evident what this reference to the public means and why such a public engagement should take place. This chapter explores the concept of the public as discussed in key position papers on genome editing and puts it into relationship with the notion of the public in political theory. The fuzzy notion of the (...) public is presented in these statements on genome editing as a tool to solve problems and to allow for hitherto unheard points of view to be considered. It is sometimes understood as a general tool for reciprocal education and social self-determination. Other times still it is used in an instrumental way to gain public support and foster an environment friendly to research and innovation. There is disagreement about the aims, the reason, and the norms guiding public discussion and the possibility of a neutral form of communication. Last but not least awareness is required for the way the public debate is framed by the very use of “genome” and “editing” rather than other concepts. (shrink)

In this paper, we explore an under-investigated question concerning the class of formal models that aim at providing normative guidance. We call such models normative models. In particular, we examine the question of how normative models can successfully exert normative guidance. First, we highlight the absence of a discussion of this question – which is surprising given the extensive debate about the success conditions of descriptive models – and motivate its importance. By focusing on the nineteenth-century debate between William Whewell and Augustus De Morgan on the nature and scope of scientific method and induction, this article captures an important episode in the history of Baconianism. More specifically, it sheds new light on the social and intellectual construction of Francis Bacon as an emblem of modern science and on British Baconianism as part of the creation of a vision of the modern enterprise. A critic of Whewell’s renovated Baconianism and an advocate of (...) an alternative anti-Baconian (or pro-Newtonian) view of science, De Morgan is presented for the first time as a philosopher of science (or metascientist), one who pioneered the application of probability theory to scientific reasoning. Linguistic theories often suffer from the dilemma that their explanatory power is based on extra-linguistic assumptions. The book delineates the essence of linguistic theory and linguistic explanation and, in doing so, proposes a solution to the dilemma. Simultaneously, the book is one of the first attempts to profile the philosophy of linguistics as a distinct sub-discipline of the contemporary philosophy of science.

Scholars disagree about the plausibility of preference purification. Some see it as a familiar phenomenon. Others denounce it as conceptually incoherent, postulating that it relies on the psychologically implausible assumption of an inner rational agent. I argue that different notions of rationality can be leveraged to advance the debate: procedural rationality and structural rationality. I explicate how structural rationality, in contrast to procedural rationality, allows us to offer an account of the guiding idea behind preference purification that avoids inner rational (...) agents. Afterward, I address two pressing challenges against preference purification that emerge under the structural rationality account. (shrink)

The idea that particular legal institutions are artifacts is not new. However, the idea that the “law” or “legal system” is itself an artifact has seldom been directly put forward, due perhaps to the ambiguities surrounding philosophical inquiries into law. Nevertheless, such an idea has recently been invoked more often, though not always developed in detail in terms of what the characterization of the “law” or “legal system” as an artifact entails ontologically, and what consequences, if any, this has for (...) philosophical accounts of law. As a result, the primary aim of this paper is to attempt an inquiry into what the claim that “law” by its nature or character is an artifact entails, and what an artifact theory of law might look like. Subverting a once widely held Quinean paradigm, there is a growing consensus among philosophers of logic that higher-order quantifiers (which bind variables in the syntactic position of predicates and sentences) are a perfectly legitimate and useful instrument in the logico-philosophical toolbox, while neither being reducible to nor fully explicable in terms of first-order quantifiers (which bind variables in singular term position). This article discusses the impact of this quantificational paradigm shift on metaphysics, focussing on theories of properties, propositions, and identity, (...) as well as on the metaphysics of modality. The role of artificial intelligence (AI) in organizations has fundamentally changed from performing routine tasks to supervising human employees. While prior studies focused on normative perceptions of such AI supervisors, employees’ behavioral reactions towards them remained largely unexplored. We draw from theories on AI aversion and appreciation to tackle the ambiguity within this field and investigate if and why employees might adhere to unethical instructions either from a human or an AI supervisor. In addition, we identify employee characteristics affecting this (...) relationship. To inform this debate, we conducted four experiments (total N = 1701) and used two state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms (causal forest and transformers). We consistently find that employees adhere less to unethical instructions from an AI than a human supervisor. Further, individual characteristics such as the tendency to comply without dissent or age constitute important boundary conditions. In addition, Study 1 identified that the perceived mind of the supervisors serves as an explanatory mechanism. We generate further insights on this mediator via experimental manipulations in two pre-registered studies by manipulating mind between two AI (Study 2) and two human supervisors (Study 3). In (pre-registered) Study 4, we replicate the resistance to unethical instructions from AI supervisors in an incentivized experimental setting. Our research generates insights into the ‘black box’ of human behavior toward AI supervisors, particularly in the moral domain, and showcases how organizational researchers can use machine learning methods as powerful tools to complement experimental research for the generation of more fine-grained insights. Higher-order realists about properties express their view that there are properties with the help of higher-order rather than first-order quantifiers. They claim two types of advantages for this way of formulating property realism. First, certain gridlocked debates about the nature of properties, such as the immanentism versus transcendentalism dispute, are taken to be dissolved. Second, a further such debate, the tropes versus universals dispute, is taken to be resolved. In this paper I first argue that higher-order realism does not in (...) fact resolve the tropes versus universals dispute. In a constructive spirit, I then develop higher-order realism in a way that leads to a dissolution, rather than a resolution, of this dispute too. (shrink)
