Why Are Events, Facts, and States of Affairs Different?Ana Clara Polakof - 2017 - Disputatio 9 (44):99-122.
This article claims that events, facts and states of affairs need to be differentiated. It takes as a starting point Chisholm’s claim that only his ontology of states of affairs explains effectively thirteen sentences related to propositions and events. He does this by reducing propositions and events to states of affairs. We argue that our ontology also solves those problems. We defend a hierarchized Platonist ontology that has concrete entities and abstract entities. The distinctions we propose allow us to explain (...)

Behavioral Experiments: How and What Can We Learn About Human Behavior.Ana C. Santos - 2009 - Journal of Economic Methodology 16 (1):71-88.
This paper addresses the experimental trade?off between the exercise of control over the actions of the experimental participants and the potential to provide understanding about human behavior. Control is a requirement of the experimental method to produce pertinent and intelligible results for scientific inquiry. But the more control is exercised the more the experimental results are the outcome of economists' actions. Economic experiments must therefore achieve a difficult balance. They must elicit intelligible behavior while ensuring that the actions of those (...)

The 'Materials' of Experimental Economics: Technological Versus Behavioral Experiments.Ana C. Santos - 2007 - Journal of Economic Methodology 14 (3):311-337.
In the natural sciences there is a general consensus on the epistemic value conferred by the participation of the ?material world? in the experimental process of knowledge production. This is no different in experimental economics. However, an inquiry into the epistemic role of the ?materials? of economics is still underdeveloped. The present paper is meant as a contribution to this inquiry. Two categories of experiments are identified according to the differentiated role of the ?materials? of economics. It is argued that (...)

In this article the author attempts to establish whether we can find a “theory of appearance” in the philosophy of Jan Patočka. The “appearance” for Patočka is basically composed of two elements. First there is a “primeval movement” which accounts for an infinite possibility of phenomena. The second element is the relation of this movement with an “addressee”, the subjectivity. If we begin to analyse the unity of these two elements we fundamentally come across three problems: what is it that (...)

Although the gender composition of assemblies is slowly changing in order to include more women, very little is known about citizens’ attitudes towards women’s descriptive representation. Using data from a representative sample of the Portuguese population, this article aims to offer an explanation of citizens’ attitudes towards women in parliament. It demonstrates that the Portuguese population is willing to see the presence of women in political power increase, but only up to a certain point: although most people support an increase (...)

Geological and Geophysical Expression of a Primary Salt Weld: An Example From the Santos Basin, Brazil.Christopher A.-L. Jackson, Clara R. Rodriguez, Atle Rotevatn & Rebecca E. Bell - 2014 - Interpretation: SEG 2 (4):SM77-SM89.
Primary salt welds form at the base of minibasins in response to complete evacuation of autochthonous salt. Analytical and numerical models suggest it is difficult to completely remove salt from a weld by viscous flow alone, which is especially true in multilayered evaporites, within which flow is likely heterogeneous due to lithologically controlled viscosity variations. Welds are important in the hydrocarbon industry because they may provide a hydrodynamic seal and trap hydrocarbons, or may allow transmission of fluids from source to (...)

This article proposes to analyse some aspects of the appropriation of New School thinking in Brazil, particularly Deweyan pragmatism, in the 1950s and 1960s. The analysis is based on the assumption that the developmentalist ideology that punctuated the debate on the economic, political and social restructuring of the country in these two decades constituted fertile ground for the return and expansion of pragmatist thinking amongst Brazilian educators, articulating itself, sometimes in contradictory ways, with this ideology. The focus of the analysis (...)

Any experimental field consists of preparing special conditions for examining interesting objects for research. So naturally, the particular ways in which scientists prepare their objects determine the kind and the content of knowledge produced. This book provides a framework for the analysis of experimental practices - the Social Epistemology of Experiment - that incorporates both the ‘material’ and the ‘social’ dimensions of knowledge production. The Social Epistemology of Experiment is applied to experimental economics and in so doing, it introduces the (...)

Contemporaneous seismic data acquisition in the Santos and Campos Basins offshore Brazil have focused on image characterization of deepwater and ultra-deepwater reservoirs and their relationship with hydrocarbons originating from synrift source rocks. Our interpretation has mapped the stratigraphy of postsalt turbidite reservoirs, and, on the presalt lithology, it has uncovered the underlying synrift sequences that embrace oil-bearing source rocks and the prolific, recently discovered, microbialite carbonate reservoirs. The new phase in geophysical data acquisition and offshore drilling that started in (...)

Assessing Intervention Effects in Sentence Processing: Object Relatives Vs. Subject Control.João Delgado, Ana Raposo & Ana Lúcia Santos - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
Object relative clauses are harder to process than subject relative clauses. Under Grillo’s Generalized Minimality framework, complexity effects of object relatives are construed as intervention effects, which result from an interaction between locality constraints on movement and the sentence processing system. Specifically, intervention of the subject DP in the movement dependency is expected to generate a minimality violation whenever processing limitations render the moved object underspecified, resulting in compromised comprehension. In the present study, assuming Generalized Minimality, we compared the processing (...)

This study was used to evaluate whether the proximity of dogs to their human companions during sleep is associated with common problematic behaviors in canines, such as destroying objects, vocalizing excessively, urinating/defecating in inappropriate places, and aggressive threats and acts toward people. Over 60,000 dog keepers answered an online questionnaire that addressed where their dogs slept at night and the frequency with which they exhibited such behaviors. Except urinating/defecating in inappropriate places and biting people, other problematic behaviors were less frequent (...)
