  9. Past Negative Consequences of Unnecessary Delay as a Marker of Procrastination.Frode Svartdal & Efim Nemtcan - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
Standard definitions of procrastination underscore the irrational nature of this habit, a critical criterion being that the procrastinating individual delays despite expecting to be worse off for the delay. However, an examination of more than 175 items in 18 procrastination scales reveals that they do not address such a forward-looking criterion. Consequently, scales run the risk of not separating maladaptive and irrational delays from other forms of delay. We propose that forward-looking considerations may not be the best way of operationalizing (...)

Terminal sedation: an emotional decision in end-of-life care.Simon Noah Etkind - 2012 - Journal of Medical Ethics 38 (8):508-509.
A patient with end-stage motor neurone disease was admitted for hospice care with worsening bulbar symptoms. Although he initially walked onto the ward he became very distressed and asked for sedation. After much discussion, this man was deeply sedated, and after some harrowing days, died. Was it right to provide terminal sedation? What should the threshold be for such treatment? How should our personal reservations affect how we approach the distressed patient in an end-of-life situation?

  11. Beyond eugenics: The forgotten scandal of hybridizing humans and apes.Alexander Etkind - 2008 - Studies in History and Philosophy of Science Part C: Studies in History and Philosophy of Biological and Biomedical Sciences 39 (2):205-210.
This paper examines the available evidence on one of the most radical ideas in the history of eugenics and utopianism. In the mid-1920s, the zoology professor Ilia Ivanov submitted to the Soviet government a project for hybridizing humans and apes by means of artificial insemination. He received substantial financing and organized expeditions to Africa to catch apes for his experiments. His project caused an international sensation. The American Association for the Advancement of Atheism announced its fund-raising campaign to support Ivanov’s (...)

Extremes in the degrees of inferability.Lance Fortnow, William Gasarch, Sanjay Jain, Efim Kinber, Martin Kummer, Stuart Kurtz, Mark Pleszkovich, Theodore Slaman, Robert Solovay & Frank Stephan - 1994 - Annals of Pure and Applied Logic 66 (3):231-276.
Most theories of learning consider inferring a function f from either observations about f or, questions about f. We consider a scenario whereby the learner observes f and asks queries to some set A. If I is a notion of learning then I[A] is the set of concept classes I-learnable by an inductive inference machine with oracle A. A and B are I-equivalent if I[A] = I[B]. The equivalence classes induced are the degrees of inferability. We prove several results about (...)

    The Rational and the Irrational.N. S. Mudragei - 1995 - Russian Studies in Philosophy 34 (2):46-65.
The problem of the rational and the irrational has been one of the most important problems of philosophy since philosophy's birth, for what is philosophy if not meditation on the structure of the universe and of man, immersed in it: Is the universe rational, or is it at bottom irrational and hence unknowable and unpredictable? Are our means of coming to know being [bytie] rational, or can one reach the depths of being only through intuition, illumination, and so forth? Let (...)

The subject of the study is collective trauma and its manifestations in post-war Italy. The definition of collective trauma is given on the basis of the works of sociologists and its characteristics. The purpose and novelty of the work is to explain the "phenomenality" of the journalist and historian Giampaolo Pansa. The contribution he made to the Italian consciousness after the release of the books "Children of the Eagle" and "Blood of the Vanquished", devoted to methods of retaliation against fascist (...)

An Examination of Katta Langar Mushaf Dated to the Early Period in Terms of Mushaf Sciences.Şeyma Genan, Betül Genan, Elif Behnan Bozdoğan & Nevrin Nur Aslan - 2023 - Sakarya Üniversitesi İlahiyat Fakültesi Dergisi 25 (47):55-88.
This article deals with the Katta Langar manuscript, which is known as one of the earliest Qur'ān copies attributed to III. Caliph Uthman. The study consists of an introduction, a conclusion and two sections. The introduction section begins with the information that the Katta Langar Mushaf which is called by this name relative to the Katta Langar village of Uzbekistan, is in the library of the Tashkent Uzbekistan Muslims Administration. Only ninety-seven pages of the mushaf, which was lost for a (...)
