This article analyses the first 20 years of the journal Philosophyof Management to provide insight into how the journal has developed and delineated the field of philosophy of management. Our content analysis uses an inductively developed combination of thematic and frequency analysis. We present our findings in a descriptive tone, inviting scholars to reflect upon how the journal has shaped the field over the past two decades, and to trigger a discussion on a more deliberately inclusive future shaping of the (...) field. There is no consensus over the proper definition of ‘scientific misconduct.’ There are differences in opinion not only between countries but also between research institutions in the same country. This is unfortunate. Without a widely accepted definition it is difficult for scientists to adjust to new research milieux. This might hamper scientific innovation and make cooperation difficult. Furthermore, due to the potentially damaging consequences it is important to combat misconduct. But how frequent is it and what measures are efficient? Without (...) an appropriate definition there are no interesting answers to these questions. In order to achieve a high degree of consensus and to foster research integrity, the international dialogue over the proper definition of ‘scientific misconduct’ must be on going. Yet, the scientific community should not end up with the definition suggested by the Swedish Research Council. The definition the council advocates does not satisfy the ordinary language condition. That is, the definition is not consistent with how ‘scientific misconduct’ is used by scientists. I will show that this is due to the fact that it refers to false results. I generalise this and argue that no adequate definition of ‘scientific misconduct’ makes such a reference. (shrink)

The article shows how merit has been used to highlight pensioners as a special population in the claims-making activities of the senior rights movement in Sweden, as well as in debates about issues concerning old age. Simply put, merit refers to the claim that pensioners have built the society and they are entitled to special treatment – for instance welfare, reverence – for this reason. Merit is concluded to be a rhetorical tool with the potential of countering images of older (...) people as a burden to the young. It portrays seniors as a population worthy of welfare and reverence. Social movements that emphasize merit among seniors will however risk isolation, since such claims to some extent have become associated with populist attacks on immigrants, politicians and other groups labeled as non-merited. En Argentina, uno de los sectores que permaneció más tiempo en situación de Aislamiento Social Preventivo y Obligatorio fue la educación. La continuidad educativa en contextos de vulnerabilidad social fue errática. Si bien, el obstáculo más visible y sin dudas central en términos de inequidad fue la falta de conectividad y la carencia de tecnología para alcanzar la educación virtual, cabe reconocer otros componentes significativos como las dificultades de los adultos para acompañar los procesos educativos de sus hijos/as, especialmente de (...) los que transitaban la educación secundaria. Para las madres “hacer de maestras” fue frustrante, angustiante y motivo de preocupación por el futuro de sus hijos/as. Para los adolescentes la escuela perdió centralidad como regulador de sus rutinas, se alteró el tiempo de sueño, y trajo aparejado desequilibrios emocionales. La escuela, una vez más, ejerció un rol central en la asistencia alimentaria y gracias a ello muchos adolescentes tuvieron un contacto períodico con algún docente. El contexto pandémico profundizó las privaciones de los hogares, evidenció las carencias preexistentes, y la pobreza de las estructuras de oportunidades educativas de los espacios socioresidenciales segregados. Inspired by Koselleck’s approach to conceptual history, this essay presents a semantic analysis of management. Our inquiry into what management is, focuses on lingual and cognitive wholes of meaning and signification. The essay undertakes a periodization of management history, in an attempt to formulate expectations for a dystopian future management by artificial intelligence. Five periods are distinguished. Each period entails a specific characterisation for three questions: what is the activity of managing, what or who is managed, and who manages? Starting (...) from managing-by-hand, successive differentiation of meaning occurs with regard to different elements of the management relationship (object, activity, agent), followed by a rescaling of the whole relationship into an attitude that can be applied anywhere by anyone. The implication is a dissociation between manager and decision-maker. The essay also speculates how plausible this evolution makes non-human managers (i.e. artificial intelligence). Throughout these five periods, hierarchy is an immanent feature of management. For each period, the essay discusses differentiated meaning, corresponding social reality and characterizes its hierarchy and justification. (shrink)

The present study investigates the association between mental health problems and criminal behavior among adolescents in Sweden. Community crime prevention in a Swedish context is also discussed. Every two years, pupils from schools in Stockholm answer the Stockholm School Survey with questions and statements about their social situation, alcohol and drug use, attitudes, school climate, school grades and criminal behavior. Data collected from pupils who answered the survey in 2014, 2018 and 2020 form the basis of this study. A significant (...) association between mental health problems and criminal behavior was shown, even after controlling for factors suggested in international literature. Mental health problems were shown to be a strong explanation for criminal behavior among adolescents. (shrink)

Siyasal sistemler, kitlelerin duyguları ile bilgilerini mobilize etmek, etkilemek ve yönlendirmek için çeşitli yol ve yöntemlere başvurur. Bunların belki de en etkilisi renk sembolizmidir. Zira renkler, hafızada kalıcı iz bırakan ve anlam zenginliği olan kültür sembolleridir. Bu sebeple bazen bir bayrakta, bazen bir afişte, bazen de bir sloganda siyasi bir araç olarak kullanılmaktadır. Hâl böyle olunca siyaset alanında gerçek niteliklerinden uzaklaşan renkler, simgesel anlam ve işlevler kazanmaktadır. Bu yolla siyasiler ile halk arasında hem hızlı bir iletişim hem de güçlü bir (...) dayanışma sağlanabilmektedir. Bu yüzden siyasiler, ideolojik söylemlerini güçlü kılmak adına deyim, özlü söz, vecize gibi dilin söz varlıklarından faydalanmaktadır. Söz konusu ifadelerde geçen renklerin (siyah, beyaz ve kırmızı vb.) siyasi ideoloji ve kavramların yerini tuttukları varsayılmaktadır. Buradan hareketle bu çalışmada, Sovyetlerden beri Rus siyasetinde gelişen sosyo-politik olaylarda sembol değer olarak kullanılan renkler analiz edilmiştir. Bu incelemede siyaset dilinde zikredilen ve aynı zamanda medya ve halkın diline yansıyan “renkli” ifadelere başvurulmuştur. Bu siyasi söylemlerin betimsel yöntemle tanımları yapılmış, renklerin taşıdıkları metaforik ile metonimik anlamları belirlenmiş ve kullanım alanları örneklerle gösterilmiştir. Böylelikle, Rus siyasetinde renklerin anlam, imaj ve fonksiyonları belirlenmeye çalışılmıştır. İnceleme neticesinde, beyazın geçtiğimiz asrın başında demokrasinin, düzenin ve meşrutiyetin simgesi; günümüzde ise hükümet karşıtı sergilenen yasadışı eylemlerin sembol ifadesi olduğu saptanmıştır. Sovyetler zamanında direnişin, isyanın, devrimin simgesi kızıl renk iken eski Sovyet coğrafyasında batı destekli gerçekleşen devrim hareketlerinde kızılın yerini turuncuya bıraktığı anlaşılmıştır. Çarlık rejimi yanlısı ve devrim karşıtı Ortodoks, muhafazakâr, milliyetçi örgütlerin temsil renginin ise siyah olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Çalışmanın sonunda ise araştırmadan elde edilen bilgi ve bulgular derlenerek kısaca değerlendirilmiştir. (shrink)

Technological developments in recent years have brought about a rapid increase in the number and variety of organ transplants, leading to problems in finding enough organs to meet the need. Organ transplantation has also become a particularly significant issue in medical ethics, especially regarding the question of how and from whom organs are procured. Many methods have been tried in order to solve these problems and discussed from an ethical perspective. This study investigates the Spanish, Belgian and Iranian approaches to (...) solving the organ procurement problem. The Spanish model, which is based on persuading patients and their relatives, is ethically less problematic and is also an improved version of the model applied in Turkey. This study argues that an ideal solution can be found without disregarding ethical rules. In particular, nurses can contribute by helping to run the system more efficiently. The principal aim of this article is to demonstrate the contribution of nurses to solving the current organ procurement problem in Turkey and offer some reflections on what can be done to improve the efficiency of the system. The purpose of this study was to examine how different inquiry experiences affect in-service science teachers’ performance in terms of their questions and classroom actions. Teachers in a workshop experience proceeded through structured, guided, and full inquiry stations where materials to make foam were provided. Participants were 26 in-service science teachers who were enrolled in an 8-day workshop learning about science-technology-society (STS) approaches to teaching. Those who experienced full inquiry first resulted in more curiosity, more questions, and more unique experiments (...) than at the other two stations. Success in guided inquiry was observed when the guidance was provided by more open-ended questions posed by the leader teachers. The study raises questions concerning the limitations on student thinking when in structured and guided laboratories that characterize traditional science teaching. An analysis of this study may contribute important direction and information for science teaching and learning and encourage more moves for STS successes. (shrink)

Notch signaling plays an essential role in the processes of embryogenesis and cellular differentiation, and it is believed that the oncogenic effects of dysregulated Notch signaling are an anomalous reflection of the normal functions of this cascade. Nonetheless, the cellular events associated with oncogenic Notch signaling have thus far remained elusive. In a recent report, Ferres‐Marco et al.1 described how they used the Drosphila eye as a model system and found that elevated Notch signaling in combination with activation of components (...) of the Polycomb complex of transcriptional repressors led to metastatic growth of tumors through epigenetic silencing of the Rbf gene. Rbf is the Drosophila homologue of the retinoblastoma tumor‐suppressor gene (Rb), thus it represents a novel link between Notch signaling, tumor growth and metastasis. El autor pasa revista a la concepción de la historia como disciplina que exhibe el filósofo Fernando Miguel Pérez Herranz. El motivo de este concienzudo análisis es la publicación en marcha del magno proyecto Más allá de imperios y naciones (4 vols.) iniciado en 2023 y que ya cuenta con dos tomos en el mercado: Rutas, fronteras y complejidad y Singularidad imperial: del Mediterráneo al Atlántico. Esta concepción del estatuto gnoseológico de la historia tiene en Lindos y tornadizos (2016) y (...) en Ambiguus proetus (2019) dos momentos esenciales que dibujan el paso Herranz a su perspectiva (la morfología filosófica) en el debate entre Gustavo Bueno y Ricardo Sánchez Ortiz de Urbina a cuenta del sujeto trascendental. En tal contexto cobran relevancia las hipercategorías formuladas por Pérez Herranz y cuyo estatuto resulta problemático. (shrink)

La propuesta gnoseológica de Ricardo Sánchez Ortiz de Urbina de retirar al Ego trascendental sus funciones gnoseológicas no es inocua para el materialismo. Tiene consecuencias ontológicas y socio-antropológicas. En esta primera parte se ilustran las primeras, discutiendo las diferencias entre el materialismo filosófico del Gustavo Bueno, tal como aparece formulado en sus textos canónicos, y el materialismo fenomenológico, que propone Urbina a propósito de lo «trascedental». Para ello uso como filtro crítico un tercer materialismo, el de Gilles Deleuze, sobre cuya (...) filosofía nómada sólo se efectúan unos apuntes esquemáticos, pero suficientes para «espantar» a los fantasmas de la razón. La referencia a Deleuze en el debate sobre las consecuencias ontológicas que trae el planteamiento de Urbina es obligada, no sólo por las prevenciones que manifiesta Urbina en su texto «a causa de su radicalidad», sino sobre todo, porque sus propuestas estaban ya presentes (como referencia implícita) en las propias formulaciones iniciales del materialismo filosófico. Alberto Hidalgo evoca a instancias de Juan Velarde Fuentes en los XI Cursos de La Granda la vida filosófica de Gustavo Bueno en el ámbito de la Universidad de Oviedo, a donde llegó en 1960 y cuya sede abandonó como catedrático emérito, no sin polémica, en 1998. Una relación que trasciende la institución y se incardina con la vida social, política e intelectual de la región donde se enclava.

Es obligatorio comenzar reconociendo que la «identidad» es una palabra inevitable. Pero es que, nos guste o no nos guste, se ha puesto de moda la «búsqueda de la identidad» y su reafirmación como una suerte de propiedad esencial, en la que anida el alma o el genio de los pueblos. Está bien que se critique ese esencialismo identitario (y yo lo haré también con herramientas filosóficas), que se recuerde la naturaleza contingente de toda identificación, la historia cambiante que hace (...) de toda identidad un proceso, una realidad en perpetuo movimiento. Es cierto que este asunto se suele abordar en el marco de la globalización contra cuya supuesta uniformización y homogeneidad han surgido las respuestas identitarias de tipo étnico y cultural o la reafirmación de nacionalismos identitarios. Pero aquí no intentamos plantearlo en el abstracto plano de la geopolítica, sino en el muy concreto de la convivencia social. (shrink)

Partiendo de la presentación que el autor hizo del libro de Manuel Cruz, El Gran Apagón (Galaxia Gutenberg, 2022), se investigan las razones que llevaron al filósofo catalán, como filósofo de guardia, a convertirse en transeúnte de la política, con la asunción de la presidencia del Senado español en 2019. Unas razones que se rastrean principalmente en su obra previa que ya desde principios de los ochenta del siglo XX trata de tomar nota tanto de las críticas (analíticas y posmodernas) (...) como de los hechos históricos irreversibles (estalinismo y hundimiento del socialismo real). Pero esto no supone renunciar a al racionalismo que toma pie en la ética para combatir desde la política los nuevos monstruos que proliferan cuando la razón sueña. (shrink)

Posición filosófica crítica, que considera a la materia como principio, origen y causa de todo lo existente. El término fue utilizado por primera vez en 1647 por Robert Boyle y fue adoptado por los philosophes de la Ilustración en el siglo XVIII para designar su posición naturalista en física y fisiología, su crítica radical a la religión, su moral hedonista y su oposición a las convenciones educativas y morales del Antiguo Régimen. El materialismo filosófico clásico sufrió los efectos del criticismo (...) de Kant y del idealismo a lo largo del siglo XIX como lo prueba en Alemania la llamada «disputa del materialismo» (Materialismusstreit), que provocó la consolidación de distintas variedades de materialismo: fisicalista, fenomenista, moral, histórico, dialéctico, etc. Es imposible dar cuenta de las variedades teóricas del materialismo, que se han ido multiplicando en el siglo XX a medida que se iba refinando nuestro conocimiento científico de la materia y del universo. Sin embargo, el carácter originario e inderivable de la materia estuvo asociado desde la Antigüedad con el atomismo cosmológico. Desde que los átomos dejan de ser «indivisibles» y no figuran como los últimos componentes de la realidad, el materialismo cobra un aspecto más metodológico y en todas sus variedades subraya la primacía ontológica de la materia frente al espíritu y la prioridad del conocimiento científico frente a otros tipos de conocimiento: religioso, místico o extrasensorial. Las prácticas docentes deben consistir en la adquisición de capacidades y habilidades operatorias por parte de los alumnos. ¿Cómo trasmitir la capacidad crítica en lo que concierne reflexivamente a la propia institución universitaria, al proceso mismo de la investigación científica y a sus productos cognitivos? Se presentan en este texto introductorio las clases prácticas de la asignatura sociología del conocimiento llevadas a cabo por Pablo Infiesta Molleda durante el curso 2009‐2010 como un modelo para vincular investigación, enseñanza y capacidad crítica.

Se recogen aquí las palabras introductorias a las Jornadas sobre Identidad Cultural como Factor de Exclusión Social. El Papel de la Cooperación al Desarrollo, que sirvió para presentar ante la sociedad una situación paradójica donde las haya, a saber, que la misma idea que sirve para nuclear todo proceso de inclusión e integración social produce alternativamente los gérmenes de la exclusión.
