본 논문은 초간본 『속삼강행실도』가 간행될 당시의 기록에는 없었으나, 이후에 사적의 하나로 중간본에 편입되어 『동국신속삼강행실도』의 부록 『속삼강행실도』에 첨입(添入)된 「심원척간」에 주목한다. 그 사적(事蹟)의 주인공 이심원의 ‘공리적(公利的)’ 행동을 중심으로 한 탐색이다. 탐색의 방향 하나는, 조선 전반에 교화서로서의 역할을 하였던 『삼강행실도』「충신도」라는 범주이며 나아가 하나의 사적으로서 「심원척간」이다. 둘은, 사적의 주인공 이심원의 공리적(公利的) 행적이 지향한 ‘척간(斥姦)’에 주목하여 그 행동의 의미를 탐색한다.BR 조선의 도학이 정몽주-길재-김숙자-김종직-김굉필·정여창-조광조-이언적-이황으로 이어지는 도통의 계보에서, 종친인 이심원은 김종직과는 사승(師承)관계, 김굉필과 정여창과는 교우(交友)관계로 연결되는 지점에 있다. 그리고 임사홍을 사랑하는 조부인 보성군의 불효고변으로 간언(諫言)이 와전되며 평생 고초를 (...) 겪다가, 결국 임사홍의 간흉에 의해 갑자사화 때 두 아들과 죽음을 맞은 이심원이 「충신도」에 사적이 기록됨으로 그 충의(忠義)의 이름을 후세에 전해야 한다고 진언한 인물이 조광조이다. 종친이라는 한계 속에 도통의 계보에 이름을 올린 이들과 밀접한 관계를 가졌던 이심원은 잊힌 인물이 분명하다.BR 『삼강행실도』「충신도」에 이름을 올린 이들은 효자이자 충신으로 대의(大義)를 위해 나라의 존망 앞에 죽음을 불사한다. 이심원의 경우는 대의를 위하다가 불효라는 죄명을 얻게 되는 상황에 까지 이른다. 당시 성리학적 사유가 심화되는 과정 속에 선공(先公)을 선택하며 멸친(滅親)함으로 후사(後私)를 결행하게 된 이심원의 공리적(公利的) 행적은 후일 오랜 논의 과정을 거치고서야 결국 「충신도」에 기록되며 이름을 전한다. 의(義)를 보고도 행하지 않으면 용기가 없는 것이며, 용기가 있는 자는 두려워하지 않으며, 어진 자는 반드시 용기가 있다고 하였다. 이심원의 행적에 대한 논의가 지금의 우리에게 여전히 시사하는 바가 적지 않을 뿐만 아니라 아직도 충분히 유효한 텍스트임을 확인한다. We investigate whether female board representation and firms’ financial performance are related and whether the relationship differs for firms located in more prejudicial environments. As a proxy for prejudicial environment, we use two geographical indicators: whether a firm is headquartered in a conservative “red” state or in a liberal “blue” state and whether the firm is located in regions where residents possess more stereotypical attitudes about gender equality. We find that both financial performance and female board representation are lower for (...) firms headquartered in red states when compared to those in blue states, and we find similar results for firms located in regions where residents hold more gender-stereotypical views. However, financial performance improves when female directors are present regardless of the firm’s location. Evidence also shows that the incremental improvement in performance measured by Tobin’s q is greater in red-state than in blue-state companies and in regions where residents hold more gender-stereotypical views. The overall results imply that gender stereotyping holds back financial performance and that female directors help improve financial performance. (shrink)

Negation is frequently found in every language, and many logicians or linguists have been carrying out research on it. Their investigations are, however, mostly confined to the languages of Europe. Although some of them pay attention to non-European languages, we can hardly find research on negation in Korean. In this paper, we carry out contra-linguistic analysis of four aspects of negation in Korean and English. First, we compare the expressions of negative elements in Korean and English sentences. Second, we contrast (...) the types of negation in Korean with those of English. Third, we draw a distinction between Korean and English in what decides the scope of negation. The precedent studies on the validity of Modus ponens and Modus tollens have been carried out with most regard to a major type of conditionals in which the conditional clause is a sufficient condition for the main clause. But we sometimes, in natural language arguments, find other types of conditionals in which the conditional clause is a necessary or necessary and sufficient condition for the main clause. In this paper I reappraise, on the basis of new definitions of Modus ponens (...) and Modus tollens, their validity/invalidity in natural language arguments in consideration of all types of conditionals. Siger conçoit sa critique à l’encontre de la théorie thomasienne de l’intellect en s’appuyant sur les adages tels que « agere sequitur formam » et « potentia non potest esse simplicior aut immaterialior quam eius substantia ». Structurant son argumentation autour de ces deux principes, il tente de démontrer que la position de Thomas d’Aquin se réduit finalement à une position matérialiste ou, se révèle encore être philosophiquement intenable lorsque ce dernier soutientces deux thèses qui, pour Siger, sont contradictoires, à (...) savoir que l’intellect est, d’une part, une des parties de l’âme humaine et d’autre part une puissance indépendante et séparée du corps. Or, Siger semble faire l’économie de l’une de ses arguments les plus puissants qui peut, a priori saper le fondement même de la théorie de l’intellect chez Thomas, à savoir le problème de se séparation du corps. Cependant, une analyse détaillée de la terminologie thomasienne nousrévèle la raison qui a poussé Siger à ne pas utiliser cette critique majeure ; en effet, il était conscient que cet argument qui semblait indiquer un possible incompatibilité entre l’intellect et le corps ne se réduisait en réalité qu’à un problème unsinnig. Cette retenue et cette maîtrise témoignent de de la perspicacité de Siger qui a su précisément demeurer à l’intérieur de la limite conceptuelle où il lui est possible de se présenter non pas comme un critique manqué deThomas d’Aquin, mais comme un véritable philosophe capable de mettre sa position en parallèl avec celle thomasienne concernant l’homme pensant ou « cet homme-ci qui pense ». The way Cambodian patients and health professionals judge the priority of HIV-infected patients in relation to the allocation of antiretroviral drugs was examined. Participants were either HIV-infected patients attending the HIV/AIDS Care and Support Centre for People Living with HIV/AIDS in Phnom Penh (29 females and 21 males) or members of the staff (9 physicians, 6 pharmacists and 15 health counsellors and health educators). They were presented with stories of a few lines depicting a patient's situation and were instructed to (...) judge the extent to which the patient should be given priority for HIV drugs. The stories were composed according to a four within-subject factor design: (a) the patient's family responsibilities, (b) the severity of infection, (c) the time elapsed since the first consultation, and (d) the financial difficulties of the family. Most patients expressed the view that the drugs should be used for the patients who are most important from a familial point of view, namely, when the family contains small children and/or is already in a precarious financial condition. Past research suggested that when individuals feel that it is their free choice to perform a task, they are more likely to succeed. However, little has been known about the effect of perceived choice of self-control and the psychological processes underlying the benefits of this perception in everyday contexts. To fill this gap, a 7-day experience sampling study was conducted to test whether confidence in sustaining the current self-control activity and perceived value of current self-control could mediate the link between (...) perceived choice and success in the current self-control activity. The results of multilevel analysis suggested that the perceived choice can boost self-control success by increasing expectancy and value of self-control. These findings add mechanistic understanding of the effect of perceived choice on self-control success. (shrink)

In this paper, we devise a network that consists of argumentation schemes and critical questions that participants in debates can use to easily construct arguments that attack or support former arguments. As a prototype, we build a potential network of argumentation schemes and critical questions with a practical reasoning scheme at its center. The usefulness of a NASCQ in constructing and reconstructing complex arguments and in formal argumentation is also explored along with argumentation more broadly.
