This book examines, above all, the relationship between reason and Vedic revelation, and the philosophical responses to the idea of the Veda. It deals with such topics as dharma, karma and rebirth, the role of man in the universe, the motivation and justification of human actions, the relationship between ritual norms and universal ethics, and reflections on the goals and sources of human knowledge. Halbfass presents previously unknown materials concerning the history of sectarian movements, including the notorious "Thags" (thaka), and (...) relations between Indian and Iranian thought. The approach is partly philosophical and partly historical and philological; to a certain extent, it is also comparative. The author explores indigenous Indian reflections on the sources, the structure and the meaning of the Hindu tradition, and traditional philosophical responses to social and historical realities. He does not deal with social and historical realities per se; rather, basing his work on the premise that to understand these realities the reflections and constructions of traditional Indian theorists are no less significant than the observations and paradigms of modern Western historians and social scientists, he explores the self-understanding of such leading thinkers as Sankara, Kumarila, Bhartrhari and Udayana. Tillich develops a non-intentional understanding of faith in his essay “The Courage to Be”. Just as the “ontological fear” belongs to the human being so also the act of faith which Tillich reinterprets with the concept of courage. Believing does not mean believing in God, but being able to live from the power of unconditional trust. This article makes it clear that for Tillich faith, understood as unconditional trust, is just as much a part of being human as the “ontological (...) fear” that alone the act of faith can cope with. Finally, the significance of this understanding of faith for preaching and pastoral care which Tillich presented in his “Religious Speeches” and with which he gave important impulses to the church’s praxis is shown conclusively. Instead of talking about the ruin of religion one has to think about the crisis ofconcept and practice ofthe »Volkskirche«. The article tries to show how the >>Volkskirche« could find a new way to the religion ofthe people. Therefore it needs great efforts for a re-staging ofthe Christian culture and symbols. Seine oftmals variierte Formel vom "größten Glück der größten Zahl" fehlt in kaum einem als Überblick angelegten Standardwerk der Moralphilosophie oder der politischen Ideengeschichte. Mit seiner materialreichen Studie liefert Wilhelm Hofmann die erste deutschsprachige Gesamtdarstellung der politisch-utilitaristischen Aufklärungsphilosophie des englischen Denkers. Ausgangsüberlegung seiner Rekonstruktion der politischen Theorie Benthams ist die These, dass sich an dessen Werk die paradigmatische Formulierung des Selbstverständnisses von Politik in modernen Gesellschaften ablesen lässt.

Seit über hundert Jahren wartet eine interessierte Öffentlichkeit auf eine umfassende, kritische, kommentierte Edition der Briefe Wilhelm von Humboldts. Die lange Reihe prominenter Akteure der Goethe-Zeit (bzw. der Napoleonischen Ära), die zu den Briefpartnern dieses Staatsmannes, Bildungsreformers und Sprachforschers zählen, sowie die Vielfalt der Themen – neben den bereits genannten sind dies vor allem Philosophie, Literatur, Philologie, bildende Kunst, Politik, diplomatische Korrespondenz, Geschichte – und nicht zuletzt die literarischen Qualitäten der Brieftexte selbst machen dieses umfangreiche Briefcorpus zu einem der (...) bedeutendsten der Epoche: ein Zeitgemälde auf höchstem Niveau. Die Ausgabe wird in drei Abteilungen erscheinen: I. Jugendbriefe, Brautzeit, erste Ehejahre (1781–1802) II. Amtszeit (1802–1819) III. Altersmuße (1820–1835). Die I. Abteilung wird fünf Bände umfassen. Band 1 beginnt mit Briefen des 13-jährigen Knaben; erster Schwerpunkt ist die Reihe schwärmerischer Briefe an Henriette Herz und weitere Mitglieder der „Verbindung“, einer Vereinigung zur gegenseitigen moralischen Vervollkommnung, die Humboldt bis zur Verlobung mit Karoline von Dacheröden intensiv beschäftigte; danach stehen die Briefe an die Braut im Vordergrund. Außerdem spielen die Briefe an Georg Forster und Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi eine wichtige Rolle; auch die später umfangreiche Korrespondenz mit Carl Gustaf von Brinkman beginnt bereits in dieser Periode. Mit der Eheschließung im Juni 1791 wird der Band abgeschlossen. Der Band enthält 198 Briefe, davon 21 bisher ungedruckte. (shrink)

Unser Wissen von Sprache können wir in Form von Begriffen, Erzählungen oder Bildern objektivieren, wobei die begriffliche Repräsentation üblicherweise als höchste Stufe der Wissensbildung gilt. Gleichwohl sollten wir die narrativen und sinnbildlichen Objektivierungen von Sprache keineswegs nur als defizitäre Vorstufen der begrifflichen ansehen, sondern eher als ergänzende Formen. Die begriffliche Erschließung von Sprache hilft uns, Sprache als Erfahrungsgegenstand kategorial einzuordnen und uns argumentativ über sie zu verständigen. Die narrative hilft uns, das pragmatische Funktionspotenzial der Sprache in konkreten Lebenszusammenhängen kennenzulernen. Die (...) sinnbildliche hilft uns, die komplexen Strukturen und Funktionen von Sprache über Analogien zu empirisch fassbaren Erfahrungsgegenständen in den Blick zu bekommen. Deshalb lassen sich Sinnbilder über Sprache als hermeutisch-heuristische Hypothesen verstehen, die mehr als ornamentale Funktionen haben. Sie gehen aus einem experimentellen Denken hervor und wollen unserer Nachdenken über Sprache dialektisch in Fluss halten. Sie veranschaulichen uns die Genese und die Substrukturen unseres Wissens von Sprache und wollen dieses nicht abschließend auf statische Begriffe bringen. (shrink)
