Do Molecular Clocks Run at All? A Critique of Molecular Systematics.Jeffrey H. Schwartz & Bruno Maresca - 2006 - Biological Theory 1 (4):357-371.
Although molecular systematists may use the terminology of cladism, claiming that the reconstruction of phylogenetic relationships is based on shared derived states , the latter is not the case. Rather, molecular systematics is based on the assumption, first clearly articulated by Zuckerkandl and Pauling , that degree of overall similarity reflects degree of relatedness. This assumption derives from interpreting molecular similarity between taxa in the context of a Darwinian model of continual and gradual change. Review of the history of molecular (...)

The Origin of Metazoa: An Algorithmic View of Life.Rafaele Di Giacomo, Jeffrey H. Schwartz & Bruno Maresca - 2013 - Biological Theory 8 (3):221-231.
We propose that the sudden emergence of metazoans during the Cambrian was due to the appearance of a complex genome architecture that was capable of computing. In turn, this made defining recursive functions possible. The underlying molecular changes that occurred in tandem were driven by the increased probability of maintaining duplicated DNA fragments in the metazoan genome. In our model, an increase in telomeric units, in conjunction with a telomerase-negative state and consequent telomere shortening, generated a reference point equivalent to (...)

  4. Facing Gaia: eight lectures on the new climatic regime.Bruno Latour - 2017 - Medford, MA: Polity. Edited by Catherine Porter.
The emergence of modern sciences in the seventeenth century profoundly renewed our understanding of Nature. For the last three centuries new ideas of Nature have been continuously developed by theology, politics, economics, and science, especially the sciences of the material world. The situation is even more unstable today, now that we have entered an ecological mutation of unprecedented scale. Some call it the Anthropocene, but it is best described as a new climatic regime. And a new regime it certainly is, (...)

  9. Ontological Pluralism and Notational Variance.Bruno Whittle - 2021 - Oxford Studies in Metaphysics 12:58-72.
Ontological pluralism is the view that there are different ways to exist. It is a position with deep roots in the history of philosophy, and in which there has been a recent resurgence of interest. In contemporary presentations, it is stated in terms of fundamental languages: as the view that such languages contain more than one quantifier. For example, one ranging over abstract objects, and another over concrete ones. A natural worry, however, is that the languages proposed by the pluralist (...)

Objects and Pseudo-Objects Ontological Deserts and Jungles from Brentano to Carnap.Bruno Leclercq, Sébastien Richard & Denis Seron (eds.) - 2015 - Boston: de Gruyter.
Which entities should be accepted as part of the furniture of the world, and which not? What are pseudo-objects, if they are not properly objects? This collection explores the answers given to these questions by some key philosophers throughout the 20th century. It brings together essays by leading scholars on a subject of central importance to both metaphysics and the history of philosophy.".

  12. On infinite size.Bruno Whittle - 2015 - Oxford Studies in Metaphysics 9:3-19.
This chapter challenges Cantor’s notion of the ‘power’, or ‘cardinality’, of an infinite set. According to Cantor, two infinite sets have the same cardinality if and only if there is a one-to-one correspondence between them. Cantor showed that there are infinite sets that do not have the same cardinality in this sense. Further, he took this result to show that there are infinite sets of different sizes. This has become the standard understanding of the result. The chapter challenges this, arguing (...)

Rejoicing: or The Torments of Religious Speech.Bruno Latour & Julie Rose - 2013 - Cambridge, UK: Polity Press Ltd. Edited by Julie Rose.
Bruno Latour’s long term project is to compare the felicity and infelicity conditions of the different values dearest to the heart of those who have ‘never been modern’. According to him, this is the only way to develop an anthropology of the Moderns. After his work on science, on technology and, more recently, on law, this book explores the truth conditions of religious speech acts.Even though there is no question that religion is one of the values that has been (...)

Isolationism, instrumentalism and fiscal policy.Bruno Verbeek - forthcoming - Economics and Philosophy:1-19.
When reading contemporary theories of distributive justice, one could easily get the impression that questions of fiscal design are normatively speaking merely instrumental for realizing the distributive ideal. Once the overall conception of justice is settled upon, questions of how the state should arrange its institutions and policies are settled if they effectively and efficiently promote the preferred distribution. I argue that such pure instrumentalism is mistaken in the context of fiscal policy. As a result, there is nothing problematic or (...)

Habiter la Terre: entretiens avec Nicolas Truong.Bruno Latour - 2022 - [Issy-les-Moulineaux]: Arte éditions. Edited by Nicolas Truong.

Quineanism, Noneism and Metaphysical Equivalence.Bruno Jacinto & Javier Belastegui - forthcoming - Studia Logica.
In this paper we propose and defend the Synonymy account, a novel account of metaphysical equivalence which draws on the idea (Rayo in The Construction of Logical Space, Oxford University Press, Oxford, 2013) that part of what it is to formulate a theory is to lay down a theoretical hypothesis concerning logical space. Roughly, two theories are synonymous—and so, in our view, equivalent—just in case (i) they take the same propositions to stand in the same entailment relations, and (ii) they (...)

Physics in crisis: from multiverses to fake news.Bruno Mansoulié - 2022 - New Jersey: World Scientific.
Today's physics has led to incredible advances in the technology we use in daily life - from cell phones and GPS systems to PET scans and more. Current theories in physics have been amazingly effective in practical terms. Yet all is far from well: the two foundational concepts in physics - Quantum Theory and General Relativity - are incompatible with each other, and observations of the universe show that our theories are incomplete - at best. While physicists have tried to (...)

Politiques de sobriété.Bruno Villalba - 2023 - Paris: Le Pommier.
