This paper presents and illustrates the concept of sustainable corporate finance. Sustainability is a well-established concept in the disciplines of environmental economics and business ethics. The paper uses a broader definition of what is called the firm to pinpoint sustainability to the finance literature. The concept of sustainable finance is compared to traditional and behavioral finance. Four criteria are used to systematically analyze the basic differences. First on the order is the theory of the firm: the definition of the firm (...) is reconsidered by integrating behavioral aspects and by expanding financial analysis to a three-dimensional goal setting. Secondly, a closer look is taken at the assumed behavior of economic agents and its consequences for the applied methodology. The shareholders paradigm is discussed against the background of growing stakeholder importance. Finally, the fourth criterion deals with the different ethical framework and its implication for financial behavior. (shrink)

La opera flotante de John Barth tiene varias puertas de acceso para el análisis. Una de ellas nos lleva a indagar sobre el tema que circunda la obra: el suicidio. Para ello, en el presente trabajo vamos a contrastar las posibles características apocalípticas del personaje principal, Todd Andrews, con determinados postulados de la filosofía existencialista de Jean Paul Sartre. La propuesta estará centrada en revisar puntos de divergencia y de afinidad en ambas cosmovisiones.

In this topical section, we highlight the next step of research on modeling aiming to contribute to the emerging literature that radically refrains from approaching modeling as a scientific endeavor. Modeling surpasses “doing science” because it is frequently incorporated into decision-making processes in politics and management, i.e., areas which are not solely epistemically oriented. We do not refer to the production of models in academia for abstract or imaginary applications in practical fields, but instead highlight the real entwinement of science (...) and policy and the real erosion of their boundaries. Models in decision making – due to their strong entwinement with policy and management – are utilized differently than models in science; they are employed for different purposes and with different constraints. We claim that “being a part of decision-making” implies that models are elements of a very particular situation, in which knowledge about the present and the future is limited but dependence of decisions on the future is distinct. Emphasis on the future indicates that decisions are made about actions that have severe and lasting consequences. In these specific situations, models enable not only the acquisition of knowledge (the primary goal of science) but also enable deciding upon actions that change the course of events. As a result, there are specific ways to construct effective models and justify their results. Although some studies have explored this topic, our understanding of how models contribute to decision making outside of science remains fragmentary. This topical section aims to fill this gap in research and formulate an agenda for additional and more systematic investigations in the field. (shrink)

The mainly medical law and health economics treatise follows the interdisciplinary theoretical approach of health services research. The focus is on managing health care in Germany through minimum numbers of cases. What effects does this concept have on the quality aspect and the needs-based approach to inpatient care. Methodologically, a selective literature search is used. In a comparative analysis between the states of Saxony-Anhalt and Schleswig-Holstein, empirical data are examined. As a result, it can be stated that the actors have (...) experienced a power shift in the health system due to the relevant legislation. In the future, it will be less the hospital planning of the federal states than the intermediary Federal Joint Committee (G-BA) and corporate structural development that will drive the centralization of the care landscape. Designing bioethics curriculum for international postgraduate students is a challenging task. There are at least two main questions, which have to be resolved in advance: (1) what is a purpose of a particular teaching program and (2) how to respectfully arrange a classroom for students coming from different cultural and professional backgrounds. In our paper we analyze the case of the Erasmus Mundus Master of Bioethics program and provide recommendations for international bioethics education. In our opinion teaching bioethics to postgraduate (...) international students goes beyond curriculum. It means that such a program requires not only well-defined goals, including equipping students with necessary skills and knowledge, but also it should first and foremost facilitate positive group dynamics among students and enables them to engage in dialogue to learn from one another. At Providence St. Joseph Health in Oregon, many factors contribute to the integration and success of the ethics services. There are three principal lenses through which one can understand the distinct way in which the ethics services are operationalized and integrated: the theological foundations of ethics as a service, the institutional ecology, and the professionalization of the field of health care ethics. Apesar de as políticas públicas de apoio a inovação priorizarem o desenvolvimento das organizações, é necessário entender que seu impacto dá voz à população e possibilita inovações capazes de impactar de forma positiva o desenvolvimento social regional. Assim, este artigo tem como objetivo avaliar a importância da formulação de políticas regionais e iniciativas voltadas à inovação e impacto destas sobre atores sociais. Para tanto, a pesquisa foi desenvolvida a partir de pesquisa bibliográfica, valendo-se de consulta à periódicos e livros das (...) áreas de ciências sociais e ciências sociais aplicadas para contemplar os objetivos de pesquisa. Após o levantamento teórico, evidencia-se que a luta pelo poder e por recursos entre os grupos sociais é o cerne da formulação de políticas públicas, sendo essa luta mediada por instituições políticas e econômicas que levam as políticas públicas para certa direção e privilegiam alguns grupos em razão de outros. No que tange o impacto social de políticas públicas voltadas à inovação, verificou-se que a ação conjunta de empresas e outros agentes locais ocasiona a criação de diferentes tipos de instituições de ensino, pesquisa e prestação de serviços que impactam no aumento da capacidade de inovação do sistema e as externalidades positivas locais.
