Over the past 25 years, no religious institution in America has done more to explore the link between the environment and spirituality than the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. Now, for the first time, a selection of the finest of the Cathedral's ecological sermons appears in a single volume.

This study is designed to test the hypothesis that events like the Holly Bough service held in Liverpool Cathedral on the fourth Sunday of Advent that attracts a wide range of participants, including regular churchgoers and occasional (sometimes annual) visitors, contribute significantly to the psychological health and well-being of these participants. At the Holly Bough service held in 2019, a total of 383 participants (139 men, 229 women and 15 individuals who preferred anonymity) completed a recognised measure of psychological health (...) and well-being (the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire) whilst they were waiting for the service to begin and again during a 5-min organ improvisation just before the close of the service. The data demonstrated a significantly higher score on the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire at time 2 than at time 1, suggesting that the experience of the service functioned as an agent of psychological health and well-being. Contribution: Situated within the science of cathedral studies, this paper confirms by means of a repeated-measure study that cathedrals promote psychological health; 383 participants at a Christmas service completed the same well-being measure before and after the service, with a significant increase in scores at time two. High profile (and controversial) events and installations, like the Helter-Skelter in Norwich and the Crazy Golf Bridges in Rochester, have drawn attention to innovation and public engagement within Anglican cathedrals. The present study contextualised these innovations both empirically and conceptually. The empirical framework draws on cathedral websites to chronicle the wide and diverse range of events and installations hosted by Anglican cathedrals in England and the Isle of Man between 2018 and 2022. The conceptual framework draws on Edward (...) Bailey’s theory of implicit religion to classify and to explore these events and installations. Two insights from the theory of implicit religion emerged as of particular significance. First, the notion of implicit religion softens the boundaries between the sacred and the secular. This was exemplified by eight categories of events: scientific exhibitions, festivals, musical events, art exhibitions, theatre, markets, community events and installations. Second, the notion of implicit religion draws attention to the themes and activities that generate meaning and purpose. This was exemplified by seven themes: social justice and social conscience, violence and reconciliation, remembrance, migration and sanctuary, COVID-19 and lockdowns, personal well-being and nature and environment.Contribution: Situated within the science of cathedral studies, this article identifies the range of innovative events and installations hosted by Anglican Cathedrals in England and the Isle of Man and assesses the significance of these events and installations through Edward Bailey’s lens of implicit religion, discussing first the softening of boundaries between the sacred and the secular and then the generation of meaning and purpose through the core themes raised by these events and installations. Against this conceptual background, (...) this paper draws on data provided by 1234 participants attending one of the Christmas Eve carol services in Liverpool Cathedral to explore the perceived impact of attendance on the spiritual health of people who do not believe in God and yet feel that Liverpool Cathedral is their cathedral, and it is this sense of belonging that brings them back at Christmas time.Contribution: Situated within the science of cathedral studies, this paper links in an original way three fields of discourse: Edward Bailey’s notion of implicit religion, David Walker’s notion of the four ways of belonging to God facilitated by the Anglican Church and John Fisher’s conceptualisation and operationalisation of the notion of spiritual wellbeing. The hypothesis developed from this original integration of theoretical perspectives is then tested empirically on data provided by 404 participants at carol services who do not believe in God. The reconstruction of hominins’ cognitive evolution has always been a crucial but challenging task. Researchers from various disciplines have tried to approach this issue, among which British archaeologist Steven Mithen’s cathedral model is regarded as one of the earliest and most creative attempts. In this model, he proposed that the Neanderthal’s mind is like a cathedral with disconnected chapels. Specifically, Neanderthals possessed advanced social, natural history, technical, and even linguistic intelligence modules, but the first three modules are isolated from each (...) other, meaning they cannot effectively use the knowledge from one domain to address the issue of another domain. This article challenges his reconstruction of Neanderthals’ cognitive capacities by presenting multiple forms of archaeological evidence bearing on various kinds of cross-domain thinking that has arisen over the past two decades. But since then new kinds of organization have vastly outstripped these neurological differences to account for the enormous advancement of human technology leaving our remarkable evolutionary cousins far behind.

The urgency of the chosen topic is due to the situation of multiculturalism and polyconfessionality of the modern world, in which the numerical superiority among the religious population belongs to the Roman Catholic Church, which has more than 1 billion followers. Therefore, being the most numerous among religions, the Roman Catholic Church has a significant influence on the religious situation in the world and on the world community as a whole. By shaping the outlook of its followers, the Church can (...) make a significant contribution to stabilizing interdenominational relations, in particular, in the formation of religious tolerance in general. Professor Warrington translates with care and grace the third of a herculean series of five Church history volumes, which have been widely successful in the original French edition. It is economically understandable but unfortunate that the bibliography of its rich French and German sources is omitted as well as the cross-references to its two (...) predecessors, although a useful twenty-five page index is provided. In an age of specialists who find the humane sharing of discovery increasingly difficult, M. Daniel-Rops is a publicist-prodigy—a practised littérateur with a comprehensive grasp of ideas, events and writings, sacred and profane, which he diffuses widely in works properly described as being de haute vulgarisation. This vivid view of the medieval Church as a whole—spiritually, politically and culturally—is personally rethought as a live unity, and should benefit both the exacting specialist in constant danger of failing to see the wood for his pet trees and the serious beginner trying to recapture the events and mentality of a remote past. Nor should one cavil at the author’s presentation in terms of his own unconcealed belief in its value. A definitive history, in which the observer conceals his own viewpoint and muffles his personal conviction, is an artificial ideal healthily rejected nowadays, as at best producing a stale record of uninspiring fact. This personal testament frankly judges the interaction of Christian belief and institution in the High Middle Ages, which saw the Christianisation of the whole continent, its cultural manifestation in cathedral and university and its militant challenge in the wars of Investiture and crusade. The inclusion of Eastern Slavs in the sphere of religious and cultural influences of Byzantium was a tremendous event both in national and in world history. Since then, the main center of the culture of Kievan Rus, incorporating a complex of ideas and functions of the spiritual, public and private life of ancient Russian society, became the Eastern Christian temple in its local version.

This study was designed to test the hypothesis that events such as the Christmas Eve Carol Services at Liverpool Cathedral that include some regular churchgoers (people who attend services most weeks) and much larger numbers of occasional visitors (who may attend church only once or twice a year) make a significant impact on the psychological health and well-being of the participants. Using a repeat-measure design, participants were invited to complete a copy of the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire while they were waiting (...) for the service to begin and then to complete a second copy during a five-minute organ improvisation just before the close of the service. An important event of the Orthodox world of the last year was the Cathedral, which took place on June 19-28 on. Mole. The extraordinary nature of this council is that it was convened 1229 years after the last Ecumenical Council in 787, which was not yet split into Orthodoxy and Catholicism of a single Christian Church. The Catholic Church then independently held its 22 councils, the last of which - the Second Vatican Council was held in 1962-1965. In Orthodoxy, extraterrestrial (...) silence prevailed, since its hierarchs believed that for the "fullness and maturity" of the Christian Church there was enough canonical work of the seven Ecumenical Councils that took place during 325-787 years. The First All-Ukrainian Council of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church, which took place on October 14-30, 1921, in Sofiyivsky Cathedral, Kiev, became a major event in the life of the Ukrainian church, for the first time it declared it collectively as an autocephaly, Ukrainianization, catholicity and apolitical. But the course and decisions of this forum have also become a significant phenomenon in the development of Ukrainian culture.

Thomas Becket's miracles formed the chief subject of the early thirteenth-century stained glass installed in the twelve ambulatory windows surrounding Becket's magnificent shrine in the Trinity Chapel of Canterbury Cathedral. This article argues that three of the five surviving miracle stories portrayed in the glass of nlV, a well-preserved window on the north aisle, have been misread. Rather than picturing miracles of pilgrims from Oxford, Essex and Warwickshire, these panels recount the miracles experienced by people from the environs of Canterbury (...) and Dover, namely William of Dene, a paralysed knight; Goditha, a crippled laywoman of Canterbury; and Saxeva, a laywoman of Dover suffering from an abdominal complaint and pain in her arm. With these new readings in place, it is possible to see that all the surviving narratives in nIV are devoted to local miracles, a remarkable and hitherto unrecognised commemoration of Thomas Becket's Kentish cult in the cathedral's glass. The focus on local pilgrims in Canterbury's nIV is comparable to the 'trade', 'donor' or 'signature' panels in the contemporary stained glass at Chartres Cathedral. (shrink)

Mediaeval psychological theory was a “faculty psychology”: a confederation of semiautonomous sub-personal agents, the interaction of which constitutes our psychological experience. One such faculty was intellective appetite, that is, the will. On what grounds was the will taken to be a distinct faculty? After a brief survey of Aristotle's criteria for identifying and distinguishing mental faculties, I look in some detail at the mainstream mediaeval view, given clear expression by Thomas Aquinas, and then at the dissenting views of John Duns (...) Scotus and William of Ockham. I conclude with some reflections on why the mainstream mediaeval view was discarded by Descartes. (shrink)

This study applied psychographic segmentation theory to explore the psychological type profile of 1082 visitors to four cathedrals (three in England and one in Wales) and to set this profile alongside the published national normative data. Data provided by the Francis Psychological Type Scales demonstrated that among cathedral visitors there were more introverts (60%), sensing types (72%) and judging types (80%), with a balance between thinking types (49%) and feeling types (51%). Comparisons with the population norms demonstrated that extraverts (...) and perceiving types were significantly underrepresented among visitors to these four cathedrals. The implications of these findings are discussed for enhancing the visitor experience of those currently visiting and for attracting those psychological types currently less likely to visit. CONTRIBUTION: Situated within the science of cathedral studies, this article demonstrates (by means of applying psychographic segmentation theory and gathering data from four cathedrals) that extraverts and perceiving types were significantly under-represented among cathedral visitors. These data are important for understanding limitations on the reach of cathedrals within the wider community. (shrink)

Kyle Stanford claims we have historical evidence that there likely are plausible unconceived alternatives in fundamental domains of science, and thus evidence that our best theories in these domains are probably false. Accordingly, we should adopt a form of instrumentalism. Elsewhere, I have argued that in fact we do not have historical evidence for the existence of plausible unconceived alternatives in particular domains of science, and that the main challenge to scientific realism is rather to provide evidence that there are (...) likely not plausible unconceived alternatives. In the present paper, I contend that we may come to have such evidence in the long run of science. I then investigate the epistemic consequences of the claim that we presently do not have evidence for or against the existence of plausible unconceived alternatives, but that in the future we may come to have evidence against the existence of plausible unconceived alternatives. I argue there are prima facie reasons to endorse a form of voluntarism in this situation according to which scientists and others may rationally be more optimistic or more pessimistic about the truth of our best theories, on the grounds that the widespread acceptance of an obligation to be an instrumentalist threatens to disrupt the proper functioning of science, in part because the domain of application of the problem of unconceived alternatives is unclear. Using the concept of purposeful action, I define the necessary and sufficient aspects of any property. These qualities are derived though noticing that property is those things which are the object of a set of past, present, and future actions of individuals. The result is that property is the result of a change in the physical world which lends itself to control and is expected to grant a future value to the actor. By deconstruction, these qualities are used to show (...) that aggression upon another actor is equivalent to a property claim in that other actor, enforcement of a property claim may involve an aggression, and conflicting aggressions may only be compared subjectively. Thus the novel concept of net coercion is introduced to delineate which actors are making an over-reaching property claim. This incorporates the common term of aggression as used by modern libertarian theorists, but allows for a further analysis when there are conflicts of possible or perceived aggressions; certainly attempting to minimize the net coercion of a system of actors is equivalent to the special case of striving for zero-aggression. After establishing the value-free concepts that entail property regimes I define the seeking of justice as trying to minimize the net coercion of any system. From this single necessary definition of justice, a number of problems are analyzed including the stereotypical commons, a construction equivalent to hostile encirclement, and claims of property in intellectual creations. The ultimate conclusion of this analysis is that property regimes with a positive net coercion are unjust and equivalent to property claims in the individual actors subject to the more aggressive actors, in essence, that they are the chattel slaves of the dominant actors in proportion to the amount of net coercion used against them. From these foundations, a philosophical system by which to analyze particular property claims is created and a suggestion of how law and economics should treat property claims is implicit. (shrink)

Gothic cathedrals like Chartres were built in a discontinuous process by groups of masons using their own local knowledge, measures, and techniques. They had neither plans nor knowledge of structural mechanics. The success of the masons in building such large complex innovative structures lies in the use of templates, string, constructive geometry, and social organization to assemble a coherent whole from the messy heterogeneous practices of diverse groups of workers. Studies in economics and humanities generally have intrinsic problems that this work illustrates, along with innovations for overcoming them. The main limitations and weak-points of orthodox theory necessitate the use in their stead of other multi-disciplinary approaches, like complexity science, agent-based simulations and artificial life simulations. An example of an artificial life simulation applied in the economics field concerning the exchange process shows the benefits of such new conceptual and methodological instruments.

Policy-based corporate law scholarship has come to be dominated by law and economics contractarian theory. Contractual focuses have obscured three deficiencies of the theory: inadequate attention to post-contractual bargaining, reductionist approaches to legal rights, and indifference to distributional considerations. Calabresi and Melamed's framework for examining the allocation and protection of legal entitlements, as explored and refined over more than 25 years of scholarship, offers a systematic means of analysing these neglected areas without compromising an economic orientation. The author uses this (...) analytical tool to demonstrate that, under conditions of relatively low bargaining costs, traditional strict fiduciary doctrine achieved bargaining outcomes that are likely to be both efficient and equitable.
