Causal Structure Learning in Continuous Systems.Zachary J. Davis, Neil R. Bramley & Bob Rehder - 2020 - Frontiers in Psychology 11.
Real causal systems are complicated. Despite this, causal learning research has traditionally emphasized how causal relations can be induced on the basis of idealized events, i.e. those that have been mapped to binary variables and abstracted from time. For example, participants may be asked to assess the efficacy of a headache-relief pill on the basis of multiple patients who take the pill (or not) and find their headache relieved (or not). In contrast, the current study examines learning via interactions with (...)

Redressing the emperor in causal clothing.Victor J. Btesh, Neil R. Bramley & David A. Lagnado - 2022 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 45:e188.
Over-flexibility in the definition of Friston blankets obscures a key distinction between observational and interventional inference. The latter requires cognizers form not just a causal representation of the world but also of their own boundary and relationship with it, in order to diagnose the consequences of their actions. We suggest this locates the blanket in the eye of the beholder.

Observing effects in various contexts won't give us general psychological theories.Chris Donkin, Aba Szollosi & Neil R. Bramley - 2022 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 45.
Generalization does not come from repeatedly observing phenomena in numerous settings, but from theories explaining what is general in those phenomena. Expecting future behavior to look like past observations is especially problematic in psychology, where behaviors change when people's knowledge changes. Psychology should thus focus on theories of people's capacity to create and apply new representations of their environments.

Young People’s Community Engagement: What Does Research-Based and Other Literature Tell us About Young People’s Perspectives and the Impact of Schools’ Contributions?Ian Davies, Gillian Hampden-Thompson, John Calhoun, George Bramley, Maria Tsouroufli, Vanita Sundaram, Pippa Lord & Jennifer Jeffes - 2013 - British Journal of Educational Studies 61 (3):327-343.
ABSTRACT This narrative synthesis based on a literature review undertaken for the project ?Creating Citizenship Communities? (funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation) includes discussion, principally, about what research evidence tells us about young people?s definitions of community, of types of engagement by different groups of young people, actions by schools and what they might do in the future to promote engagement. Community is seen as a highly significant and contested area. Young people are viewed negatively by adults but are in (...)

Youth key persons’ digital discipleship process during the pandemic and post-pandemic era.I. Putu A. Darmawan, Jamin Tanhidy & Yabes Doma - 2024 - HTS Theological Studies 80 (1):8.
Discipleship is a responsibility of the Church. It is an outlet in which the regeneration of Church leadership to the younger generation is conducted. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, discipleship and mentoring of youth leaders, especially key persons of GKII (Gereja Kemah Injil Indonesia) youth were provided by means of in-person activities. During the pandemic, digital media has been utilised for various church activities, including mentoring these key persons. Hence, this research intends to explore: (1) the method by which key persons (...)

The evolution of sexual reproduction as a repair mechanism. Part I. a model for self-repair and its biological implications.I. Walker - 1978 - Acta Biotheoretica 27 (3-4):133-158.
The theory is presented that the sexual process is a repair mechanism which maintains redundancy within the sub-structure of hierarchical, self-reproducing organisms. In order to keep the problems within mathematically tractable limits , a simple model is introduced: a wheel with 6 spokes, 3 of them vital and 3 redundant, symbolizes the individual . Random accidents destroy spokes; the wheels replicate at regular cycles and engage periodically in pairing and repair phases during which missing spokes are copy-reproduced along the intact (...)

Written as a dialogue between Socrates and a hypothetical contemporary CEO,Socrates Comes to (...)
