This paper presents a framework for exploring the temporal and behavioral aspects of the responses of various involved parties that may lead to governmental intervention in situations involving exposure of the public to hazardous substances. The activities of key individuals are closely scrutinized. Relevance of the framework to agricultural and food concerns is also indicated. The exemplary case is the contamination of livestock in Michigan that began in 1973, but other cases are discussed that conform closely to the pattern described (...) by the framework. (shrink)

Objectives: Childhood cancer is a life-threatening disease that poses significant challenges to the life of the diagnosed child and his/her family members. Based on the ABCX-model, the aim of the current study was to explore the association between family functioning, cancer appraisal and the individual adjustment of patients, parents and siblings. Method: Participants were 60 children with leukemia or non-Hodgkin lymphoma, 172 parents and 78 siblings (115 families). Time since diagnosis varied from zero to 33 months. Patients, parents and siblings (...) completed the Family Environment Scale, Perceived Stress Scale, Situation-Specific Emotional Reactions Questionnaire and Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory/Maudsley Marital Questionnaire. Results: Family functioning and the appraisal of the cancer diagnosis proved to be related to patients’, parents’ and siblings’ cancer-related emotions and quality of life post-diagnosis. In addition, family members differed in their perception of some family functioning domains, the appraisal of the cancer diagnosis, positive feelings and quality of life. Discussion: Our findings led to the conclusion that family functioning and the appraisal of the cancer diagnosis are important for the individual adjustment of patients, parents and siblings when facing a diagnosis of cancer in the child. Differences across members within one family speak to the need of screening all family members and intervening at the level of the family unit. (shrink)

이 논문은 이른바 놀이하는 존재Homo ludens로서의 인간에 대한 정의를 중심으로 인간을 이해하기 위한 의도로 기획한 글이다. 전통적인 관점에서 인간에 대한 정의는 이성적 존재Homo sapiens, 도구적 존재Homo faber 등으로 이해되어왔으나, 그러한 이해는 인간에 대한 특수적 관점만을 부각시키고 있기에 인간에 대한 전일적 이해에 걸림돌이 되어왔다. 이성적 존재로 인간을 이해하는 한 21세기에 비약적인 과학적 발전을 바탕으로 전개되고 있는 초인류 사회에서 인간에 대한 이해는 새로운 문제점에 봉착하게 된다. 이러한 논의를 유발 하라리의 『사피엔스』와 『호모데우스』에서의 주장에 근거해서 논의를 전개하였다. 한편, 인간에 대한 도구적 존재로서의 이해 방식 (...) 역시 인간이해에 있어서 단편적인 이해라는 난점을 지니고 있다. 신체의 확장으로서 도구의 제작과 사용이 인간을 정의하는데 있어서는 매우 유효할 것 같지만 인간의 문화를 이해하는 차원에서 한계를 드러낸다고 하겠다. 필자는 놀이하는 존재Homo ludens로서의 인간이야말로 인간을 이해하는데 매우 적절한 이해 방식이라고 본다. 이른바 피로사회로 정의되는 현대사회의 지평에서 인간의 이해방식을 통해 피로사회의 극복 방안을 모색하는 차원에서 이 글을 작성하였다. Die Bedeutung des Spiels in der Lebenswelt der mittelalterlichen Klöster und Orden ist bislang nicht als Phänomen von kultureller Tragweite erörtert worden, denn der (scheinbare) Antagonismus aus kontemplativem Leben einerseits und heiterem Spiel andererseits verhinderte, dass der religiosus ludens wissenschaftlich Beachtung fand. Die im Band vereinigten, interdisziplinären Analysen der theologischen, liturgischen, kunstgeschichtlichen, rechtlichen und sozialen Dimensionen von Ball-, Würfel-, Brett-, Karten- und Wissensspielen verdeutlichen erstmals die gestalterische Kraft der Ordensleute zur Erfindung, Adaption und Vermittlung von Spielen wie deren Sinngehalten innerhalb (...) der vormodernen Gesellschaft. Im Aufzeigen der innovativen und mannigfaltigen Wege der Legitimation und Delegitimation monastischen und außermonastischen Spiels, aus denen Ordensleute zudem wegweisende und gesamtgesellschaftlich tragfähige Kategorisierungen des ludus entwickelten und nahezu sämtliche Lebensentwürfe der Vormoderne erklärten, stellt der Band nicht nur eine neuartige Perspektive auf das Spiel und die vita religiosa vor. Play and games are among the basic means of expression in intelligent communication, influenced by the relevant cultural environment. Games have found a natural expression in the contemporary computer era in which communications are increasingly mediated by computing technology. The widespread use of e-games results in conceptual and policy vacuums that must be examined and understood. Humans involved in design-ing, administering, selling, playing etc. computer games encounter new situations in which good and bad, right and wrong, are not defined by (...) the experience of previous generations. This article gives an account of the historical necessity of games, the development of e-games, their pros- and cons, threats and promises, focusing on the ethical awareness and attitudes of game developers. This essay argues that reflection on sexual selection can be theologically generative, and that it presents needed counteremphases to some of the discussions about theological anthropology that have been fueled by theological reflection on natural selection. It introduces sexual selection and provides an overview of different approaches to sexual selection found within evolutionary biology today, before transitioning to a reflection on one theologically relevant insight from sexual selection—namely, the importance of play. It argues that the mating and play behaviors of (...) animals reveal the noncompetitive relationship between necessity and gratuity, and thus provide theologians with an example of grace building upon, and not destroying, nature. While play is sometimes depicted in philosophical and theological accounts as the achievement of culture that supersedes the mundane necessities of nature, sexual selection can also help to illuminate the ways in which culture is dependent upon nature, and play is a thoroughly natural phenomenon that provides resources for human cultural elaboration. This article describes, by way of an analysis of the human suffering, under which circumstances and on what conditions the belief in God can indeed be connected with the human suffering. 필자의 논의는 우리 인간에게 있어서의 “모든 충동은 죽음의 충동”이라는 라캉의 주장에 대한 동의에서 출발한다. ｢쾌락 원칙을 넘어서｣에서 프로이트가 죽음 충동 개념을 도입한 이래로 죽음 충동에 관한 많은 유의미한 논의들이 있어왔다. 그러한 논의 중에는 엄밀성에 있어서 가치 있는 연구들도 있었고 삶의 가치를 풍요롭게 해 줄 연구들도 있었다. 개념 자체에 관한 논의들은 프로이트의 기획의 본 의도를 더욱 명확하게 해 준 것들도 있었고, 그의 논의가 가진 맹점을 날카롭게 비판한 것들도 있었다. 개념의 엄밀성을 보다 정교하게 해 줄 연구들은 지금도 여전히 풍부하게 진행 중일 것이다. (...) 그래서 필자의 연구는 그와는 다소 다른 관점에서 기획됐다. 필자는 오늘날 우리에게 가장 절실한 것으로서 삶에 대한 보다 건강하고 건전한 이해를 도울 수 있는 설명을 꼽는다. 그리고 그러한 설명이 다름 아닌 철학함이고, 철학 실천이라고 이해하고 있다. 본 연구는 철학에 관한 필자의 그와 같은 기본적 이해 혹은 신념의 바탕에서 출발한 것으로 필자는 본고에서 죽음 충동 개념을 통해 새로운 철학적 전망을 제시하고자 한다. 필자는 “말하는 주체”로서 우리가 처한 구조적 현실에서의 여러 고통들은 상징과 실재를 등가화하려는 시도 속에서 발생한다고 본다. 결코 등가화될 수 없는 불가능한 것들 사이에서 끊임없이 시도되는 실재의 상징화는 또 다른 불가능으로 치달을 수밖에 없지만, 그러한 충동들은 그 과정에서 우리에게 ‘너머의 쾌’를 제공해주기도 한다. 또한 충동하는 주체에게는 상징의 무한 부정을 통해 자유롭게 삶을 새롭게 해석해낼 수 있는 자유가 허락된다. 필자는 그런 종류의 충동들을 다름 아닌 “호모 루덴스”의 “죽음 충동”으로 해석하고 있으며, 이것이 고통을 넘어서는 고양된 삶에 이바지 한다고 주장하고자 한다. After the moral framework of sustainable development, the focus on climate change appears to take a lead in the practice and theory of environmental education. Inherent in this perspective is an apocalyptic message: if we do not rapidly change our use of energy resources, we will severely harm the life conditions of our children and grandchildren. In this article we argue that environmental educators should liberate us from this highly instrumental dictate by taking their cue from our daily care for (...) our environment as revealed in child?s play in nature. Inherent in the interaction of the Homo ludens with nature is a spiral time experience. This time condition elicits a particular responsibility: rather than calculating which means are necessary to prevent future disasters, we should respond with care to the concentric circles of an open and indefinite future. Therefore, environmental education should not aim to prevent future disasters, but foster anticipating care for nature. (shrink)

In his work, Bernard Suits presents and pursues a stated objective: to define ‘game’ or, more precisely, ‘game-playing’. In The Grasshopper: Games, Life and Utopia, the author seeks a definition not as a ‘commitment to the universal fruitfulness of definition construction’, but rather with the idea ‘that some things are definable, and some are not’. This is something he believed could resolve many of the issues surrounding the debate on ‘game’ and ‘play’, such as those with Huizinga (in Homo Ludens) (...) or proposed by the anti-definitionism of Wittgenstein, a philosopher who did not accept that it was possible to define ‘game’. In this article, we will trace Suits’ definitional steps and aim to critique his resolution as a kind of ‘formalism’, as it tended to prioritize rules. Furthermore, notwithstanding the merit of his theoretical endeavor – seen in the attempt to define a social component that is so complex and the target of the most diverse interpretations and misconceptions –, it seems to us that, with his theoretical unifying element (lusory attitude), the author has summoned another problem to the debate, that of ‘subjectivism’, rather than a solution (especially to his formalism), even subjecting himself to comparisons with other conceptions (e.g. Fichte) that are also problematic. This aspect will also be criticized. The attention of this article will shift to these two lines of critique, drawing on an insightful analysis of Malaby’s work at a specific juncture, aiming to delve further into the subject and taking an additional step. It is not a semantic accident that four key notions of social ethics are also key concepts of theater. These are the concepts of character, playing a part/role, performance, and acting. Of course, one could object that there is a touch of pun in this claim: A character in a drama is not quite the same as good or bad character in a virtue ethics; acting in theater is mere play-acting, whereas acting in social and personal life is serious business. Automation may be able to completely eliminate the need for labour. But how should we use the freed-up time? In his proposal for a future urbanism, New Babylon, Constant Nieuwenhuys thought people would engage in nonstop free play, remaking surroundings. I argue that at the core of New Babylon is an intuition about a satisfying life, that of Homo ludens. This intuition had a broad appeal in the 1960s. New Babylon is an intuition pump, not a utopia, and Constant wants (...) Homo ludens to be possible and desirable. Possibility can today be most urgently equated with sustainability.I will argue that New Babylon is not sustainable. I will also argue Homo ludens is not desirable, and 1960s intuitions about the good life have dated. Where sporting games may be said to epitomize our species’ unique agential capacity for playful movement, sports played in nature differ from their equivalent played indoors in that they envelop the human agent within the living physical environment from which our agency originates. In this paper, we draw attention to how sporting sites differ according to origin by pursuing a biosemiotic line of reasoning. Here, the story of a meaningful human life begins with the eukaryotic cell, even though the human (...) subject itself arises much later. As such, the story of nature in relation to our agency, here, in sports, changes too. We present key concepts from biosemiotics, including its continuum life-as-semiotic-agency view, Umwelt, metasemiosis, and semiotic scaffolding to advance our argument that naturogenic sporting sites provide continuity to the macro processes that have generated our semiotic ability to play. Meanwhile, secluded anthropogenic environments constitute yet another discontinuity for the modern sportsperson where the moving body steps into an anthroposemiotic loop and its restricted signscapes from centralized agency. We conclude on the primacy of naturogenic sporting sites as they preserve the quality and complexity of animal ludens’ constitutive relations and therefrom semiotic freedom, on which current and future gameplaying depends. In this article, I examine Bourdieu’s conception of symbolic domination as based on misrecognition and compare it with Gramsci’s notion of hegemony based on consent. Drawing on research in workplaces in the US and Hungary I show how both theories are flawed. Gramsci does not appreciate the importance of mystification as a foundation for stable hegemony in advanced capitalism while Bourdieu’s notion of misrecognition, based on the notion of habitus, is too deep to comprehend the fragility of state socialist regimes. Das Ziel des vorliegenden Beitrags ist es, die Fluchtverwandlung als wesentlichen Aspekt des Diskursverhaltens der extremen Rechte zu beschreiben. Der Beitrag geht aus vom Prinzip, dass ein offener Diskurs all jenen offenstehen soll, die ihn als legitime Form der Auseinandersetzung anerkennen und ihn nicht zu zerstören versuchen. Es wird gezeigt, dass der Vergleich des offenen Diskurses mit einem Spiel sich für die Betrachtung des Diskursverhaltens als äußerst fruchtbar erweist. Dieser Vergleich ermöglicht im Rückgriff auf Johan Huizinga (Homo ludens, 1938) die (...) Anwendung der Unterscheidung zwischen Falschspieler und Spielverderber auf den Diskurs. Wer den Diskurs zu zerstören versucht, entspricht vielmehr einem Spielverderber als einem Falschspieler. Das besondere Merkmal des Diskurses von Spielverderber:innen wird am Beispiel der Diskursführung von Sekten illustriert. Als ihr wesentliches diskursstrategisches Mittel erweist sich, was Elias Canetti (Masse und Macht, 1960) als Fluchtverwandlung beschreibt. Der Diskurs der Spielverderber:innen zeichnet sich durch wiederholte schnelle Fluchtverwandlungen aus, deren Zweck darin besteht, sich nicht auf eine bestimmte Position festnageln zu lassen. Resumen:La filosofía ofrece múltiples ópticas para considerar el curso de la historia de la humanidad, perspectivas que van desde lo epistemológico hasta lo metafísico. Entre aquellas posibilidades interpretativas se encuentra el juego, específicamente la concepción antropológica del ser humano en tanto homo ludens –tema ya trabajado por Holzapfel en una obra previa–. A partir de dicha concepción lúdica del ser humano es posible analizar la dialéctica de los diversos tipos de juegos en el desarrollo histórico. La presente obra constituye una (...) invitación a recorrer el despliegue del homo ludens hasta las repercusiones de su desregulación agonal (juego de competencia) en nuestros días, proponiendo una solución lúdica a la crisis actual. In this paper, I present an experience of philosophical dialogue with small children in a public school in Bari, Italy in the context of the Philosophia Ludens for Children project. I present the experience, including the transcripts of six conversations with several groups of children, and then draw some inferences concerning the importance of the relationship between Universities and schools; the philosophical strength of both children’s commitment and philosophical ideas and their positive understanding of childhood.

Virtual games are new worlds for the players waiting to be discovered. Video games in this new world are considered to be sports activities by some people, while some oppose to this conception. In this regard, philosophical approaches set out and the current state of whether video games are considered as sports activities is presented. In addition (...) to this classificatory issue an ethical one concerning the level of addiction for the players who immerse into the virtual worlds is also discussed, since the level of immersion is sometimes so high that some people die while playing video games on the computer. The answer to the question of how these video games can be so addictive is considered in relation to Johan Huizinga’s Homo ludens, and the notion of phantasm by Gilles Deleuze. El juego es hoy la forma que explica y hace concebible, entre otros fenómenos, la subjetividad, la economía, la política, el amor, la guerra y el trabajo, reemplazando mediaciones previas como la poesía, el teatro, la fotografía, la novela y el cine. Sin embargo, carecemos de una genealogía. Así como existen historias de juegos particulares y de otras formas artísticas, la historia del juego suele quedar reducida al sumario del libro de Johan Huizinga, Homo Ludens, y de sus epígonos. A (...) ello se añade que bajo el marbete game studies se ha desarrollado una disciplina que metonimiza juego y videojuego, obliterando el potencial hermenéutico historicista de lo lúdico. Así, en este texto pretendo dos cosas: argumentar a favor de la necesidad de ampliar el espectro formalista de los game studies y ofrecer una distinción entre las dimensiones designativas de la noción de juego para entender sus concepciones premodernas, modernas y posmodernas. Además, propongo retrotraer a la noción de "juego libre" de Immanuel Kant la noción apodíctica de juego de Huizinga y al período pre-capitalista la aparición de una "cultura del ocio" relevante para entender la superación ludocapitalista de la dicotomía ocio-trabajo. To arrive at a practical solution in the political problem, one must take the road of aesthetics because, in Schiller’s opinion, it is only through beauty that we arrive at freedom. This can only be demonstrated if we first know the principles by which reason is guided in political legislation; for, although in its aesthetic state human action is truly free and it is free to the highest degree from any constrictions, it is not, nevertheless, beyond laws. Reason and the (...) illumination of the mind, Friedrich Schiller believes, are not enough to make the truth triumph and heal the political: an education of feeling is necessary. The education of feeling represents the most stringent necessity as it becomes both a means to render efficient the improvement of ideas and judgments in practical life, and a cause generating this improvement. For, any amelioration in the sphere of the political must have in view the ennoblement of the character, and the instrument most at hand to this aim is the art of the beautiful.Beauty is the common object of the two impulses or instincts (reason and experience) and is best expressed through the concept of play; it is only play that renders man complete and develops his double nature. Making the beautiful a mere play does not involve a degradation of beauty; restricting the beautiful, which is regarded as an element of culture, to mere play is not in contradiction with the dignity of beauty, but we must look at the idea of play as it was expressed by Johan Huizinga also, and see man as the homo ludens providing the art of life.
