Applying Dimensionality Reduction Techniques in Source-Space Electroencephalography via Template and Magnetic Resonance Imaging-Derived Head Models to Continuously Decode Hand Trajectories.Nitikorn Srisrisawang & Gernot R. Müller-Putz - 2022 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 16.
Several studies showed evidence supporting the possibility of hand trajectory decoding from low-frequency electroencephalography. However, the decoding in the source space via source localization is scarcely investigated. In this study, we tried to tackle the problem of collinearity due to the higher number of signals in the source space by two folds: first, we selected signals in predefined regions of interest ; second, we applied dimensionality reduction techniques to each ROI. The dimensionality reduction techniques were computing the mean, principal component (...)

Using linear parameter varying autoregressive models to measure cross frequency couplings in EEG signals.Kyriaki Kostoglou & Gernot R. Müller-Putz - 2022 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 16:915815.
For years now, phase-amplitude cross frequency coupling (CFC) has been observed across multiple brain regions under different physiological and pathological conditions. It has been suggested that CFC serves as a mechanism that facilitates communication and information transfer between local and spatially separated neuronal populations. In non-invasive brain computer interfaces (BCI), CFC has not been thoroughly explored. In this work, we propose a CFC estimation method based on Linear Parameter Varying Autoregressive (LPV-AR) models and we assess its performance using both synthetic (...)

Establishing the basic knowledge, methodology, and technology for a framework for the continuous decoding of hand/arm movement intention was the aim of the ERC-funded project “Feel Your Reach”. In this work, we review the studies and methods we performed and implemented in the last 6 years, which build the basis for enabling severely paralyzed people to non-invasively control a robotic arm in real-time from electroencephalogram. In detail, we investigated goal-directed movement detection, decoding of executed and attempted movement trajectories, grasping correlates, (...)

Neural Suppression Elicited During Motor Imagery Following the Observation of Biological Motion From Point-Light Walker Stimuli.Alice Grazia, Michael Wimmer, Gernot R. Müller-Putz & Selina C. Wriessnegger - 2022 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 15.
Introduction: Advantageous effects of biological motion detection, a low-perceptual mechanism that allows the rapid recognition and understanding of spatiotemporal characteristics of movement via salient kinematics information, can be amplified when combined with motor imagery, i.e., the mental simulation of motor acts. According to Jeannerod’s neurostimulation theory, asynchronous firing and reduction of mu and beta rhythm oscillations, referred to as suppression over the sensorimotor area, are sensitive to both MI and action observation of BM. Yet, not many studies investigated the use (...)

Long-term mutual training for the cybathlon bci race with a tetraplegic pilot: A case study on inter-session transfer and intra-session adaptation.Lea Hehenberger, Reinmar J. Kobler, Catarina Lopes-Dias, Nitikorn Srisrisawang, Peter Tumfart, John B. Uroko, Paul R. Torke & Gernot R. Müller-Putz - 2021 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 15.
CYBATHLON is an international championship where people with severe physical disabilities compete with the aid of state-of-the-art assistive technology. In one of the disciplines, the BCI Race, tetraplegic pilots compete in a computer game race by controlling an avatar with a brain-computer interface. This competition offers a perfect opportunity for BCI researchers to study long-term training effects in potential end-users, and to evaluate BCI performance in a realistic environment. In this work, we describe the BCI system designed by the team (...)

Measuring Spinal Cord Potentials and Cortico-Spinal Interactions After Wrist Movements Induced by Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation.Michael Wimmer, Kyriaki Kostoglou & Gernot R. Müller-Putz - 2022 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 16.
Electroencephalographic correlates of movement have been studied extensively over many years. In the present work, we focus on investigating neural correlates that originate from the spine and study their connectivity to corresponding signals from the sensorimotor cortex using multivariate autoregressive models. To study cortico-spinal interactions, we simultaneously measured spinal cord potentials and somatosensory evoked potentials of wrist movements elicited by neuromuscular electrical stimulation. We identified directional connections between spine and cortex during both the extension and flexion of the wrist using (...)

Mental State Detection Using Riemannian Geometry on Electroencephalogram Brain Signals.Selina C. Wriessnegger, Philipp Raggam, Kyriaki Kostoglou & Gernot R. Müller-Putz - 2021 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 15.
The goal of this study was to implement a Riemannian geometry -based algorithm to detect high mental workload and mental fatigue using task-induced electroencephalogram signals. In order to elicit high MWL and MF, the participants performed a cognitively demanding task in the form of the letter n-back task. We analyzed the time-varying characteristics of the EEG band power features in the theta and alpha frequency band at different task conditions and cortical areas by employing a RG-based framework. MWL and MF (...)

Effects of experimentally induced dissociation on attention and memory.Chris R. Brewin, Belinda Yt Ma & Jessica Colson - 2013 - Consciousness and Cognition 22 (1):315-323.
Dissociation is an important aspect of responses to traumatic events. According to a number of influential theories, it negatively impacts cognitive performance including encoding of the trauma memories, leading to an increased risk of later conditions such as posttraumatic stress disorder . We tested this hypothesis experimentally in two studies by inducing dissociation in the laboratory and investigating the effects on several aspects of cognition, including time estimation, digit and spatial span, and story recall. Dissociation was related to decrements in (...)

Philosophie in Rom - Römische Philosophie?: kultur-, literatur- und philosophiegeschichtliche Perspektiven.Gernot Michael Müller & Fosca Mariani-Zini (eds.) - 2018 - de Gruyter.
The volume's topic is a comparative analysis of the main authors and social groups who were engaged with the reception of hellenistic philosophy at Rome. It studies in which way their specific approach to philosophy can be explained by their Roman cultural and intellectual background. Thus the volume designs philosophical and cultural criteria to be common to the philosophical activities of Romans and make them discernible as specifically Roman.

This paper is aimed at assessing how power, control, and resistance come into play and how resistance counteracts power and control in police investigative interviewing. Considering that the Philippines was once a colony of the United States, it is essential to compare the two samples as the Philippine legal system is highly patterned after the American jurisprudence (Mercullo in JForensicRes 11:1–4, 2020). Highlighting the existing and emerging power relations between the police interviewer and the interviewee, the study employed Sacks, Schegloff, (...)

The DAMA project is an observatory for rare processes and it is operative deep underground at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory of the I.N.F.N. In particular, the DAMA/LIBRA (Large sodium Iodide Bulk for RAre processes) set-up consists of highly radiopure NaI(Tl) detectors for a total sensitive exposed mass of ≃250 kg. Recent results, obtained by this set-up by exploiting the model independent annual modulation signature of Dark Matter (DM) particles, have confirmed and improved those obtained by the former DAMA/NaI experiment. The music ensemble has often been used as an analogy of organisation processes in general. Many versions of this analogy presuppose a specific organisation structure in the ensemble with clearly defined leader-follower relationships from which we can learn important points about successful leadership. This paper wishes to draw attention to the wide variety of organisation processes that may occur in a music ensemble, some of which are not dependent on leadership. Through the outlines of a logical analysis of a coordination (...)
