Some changes in the environment, when attended to, result in cognitive response which may be called thinking with change. Thinking with change is similar to the “algorithm of sense detection” of metaphors. In fact, the interpretation of any kind of metaphor is framed by the general human mechanism of dealing with a change. Therefore an interpreted (meaningful) change is here called metaphorical. The first part clarifies the concepts of change and metaphor. The second part provides the characteristics of metaphorical changes. (...) Finally, we try to answer the question if metaphorical thinking with change is rational. Metaforyczne zmiany poznawcze: na krawędzi racjonalności Rozważania podjęte w niniejszym artykule wyrastają ze spostrzeżenia, że: (1) niektóre zmiany w otoczeniu, kiedy zostały zauważone, wzbudzają pewną odpowiedź kognitywną, którą nazwać można myśleniem zmianą i (2) owo myślenie zmianą odbywa się na wzór myślenia metaforycznego. Zatem znalezienie sensu zmiany przebiega podobnie jak znalezienie sensu nowej, świeżej metafory. W rzeczywistości jednak to interpretowanie metafory odbywa się zgodnie z kanonem myślenia inicjowanego zmianą. Najpierw przedstawiona zostanie bardzo skrótowo pewna teoria metafory. Zmiana, która uzyskała sens nazywana będzie dalej zmianą metaforyczną. Pierwsza część zawiera wyjaśnienia sposobu rozumienia obu kluczowych terminów: zmiany oraz metafory. Druga ma na celu ukazanie, jakie zmiany w otoczeniu są metaforyczne oraz zarysowanie koncepcji, w ramach której można opisać zmiany metaforyczne jako proces poznawczy. W końcu, postaram się odpowiedzieć na pytanie, czy myślenie zmianą jest racjonalne. (shrink)

The study was designed to examine whether trait emotional intelligence would moderate the impact of negative emotions at work on job burnout. A total of 188 female nurses participated in this study and completed measures of trait affectivity, emotional intelligence, anger and sadness at work [over five consecutive days, nurses rated the extent to which they experienced anger-related emotions (i.e., irritation, embitterment and anger) and sadness-related emotions (i.e., depression, disappointment and sadness)], and burnout. The results revealed significant and positive relationships (...) between both types of negative emotions and burnout above and beyond demographics and the nurses’ trait affectivity. Importantly, the study demonstrated that trait emotional intelligence buffers the effects of negative emotions on burnout. Specifically, anger- and sadness-related emotions predicted greater burnout among nurses with low trait emotional intelligence but not among nurses with high trait emotional intelligence. These results suggest that emotional intelligence training could be implemented to prevent the adverse effect of negative emotions felt at work on job burnout. (shrink)

Autoprzekład porusza się, podobnie jak przekład tradycyjny, na płaszczyźnie interlingwalnej, która niesie czasem większe ryzyko „melanżu” językowego w przypadku, jeśli autor poza tym, że (...) jest osobą bilingwalną, to jeszcze publikuje dwujęzycznie. This study contributes to the constantly accumulating evidence on the effects of customer incivility (CI) on service employee exhaustion. Previous research has demonstrated that surface acting (SA) acts as a mediating variable in the relationship between CI and exhaustion. This study extended prior findings in two ways. The results of Study 1 (315 retail sales employees, 62.2% female) demonstrated that SA mediates the positive relationship between CI and exhaustion while controlling for employees’ trait positive and negative affectivity (NA). The results (...) of Study 2 (292 customer service representatives, 51% female) supported a moderated mediation model demonstrating that trait emotional intelligence (EI) buffers the direct and indirect (through SA) effects of CI on exhaustion. Specifically, it was found that employees exposed to many uncivil customer behaviors but high in trait EI reported using less SA and, thus, experienced fewer exhaustion symptoms than their low in trait EI counterparts. These results highlight EI as an important personal resource that mitigates the adverse effects of CI on service employees’ exhaustion, and suggest that organizations should consider implementing EI training programmes for their frontline service employees. One of the most influential views in privacy scholarship is that privacy protects individual autonomy. On the early liberal view, the exercise of autonomy requires detachment from social and political life and privacy facilitates it. This view of privacy still informs current legal and political practice. As this view of privacy presupposes a tension between privacy and society, it is responsible for the underrating of privacy in legal and political practice. Over the last decades, liberal reflection on autonomy has shifted (...) from the early liberal understanding of autonomy as calling for detachment from social life to the idea of autonomy as socially embedded. This development has brought about a corresponding adjustment in the liberal concept of privacy: privacy has come to be seen as a social rather than merely an individual interest. The social turn in thinking about privacy has gone a long way to change the problematic image of privacy in legal and political practice. It has not gone far enough, however, to draw conclusions regarding the political relevance of privacy. I argue that we should understand autonomy as politically embedded. Revised along these lines, privacy has a political value: when we claim privacy, we do not make a claim to withdraw from political life, but rather make a claim to protect certain forms of political engagement. Złożoność intertekstowości i jej mechanizmów rozpatrywana jest wielopoziomowo. Na poziomie badań literaturoznawczych ujawnia się w kontekście reprezentacji określonych genrów, koncepcji związków i zależności pomiędzy tekstami literackimi. Na poziomie lingwistycznym chodzi w szczególności o badania w ramach lingwistyki tekstu, która postrzega intertekstualność z jednej strony jako immanentną cechę tekstu, jako koncepcję przynależności i warunkowania tekstów określonym rodzajem bądź typem tekstu oraz również jako związek tekstów wchodzących w relacje dyskursywne. Na przykładzie niemieckich tekstów prasowych tematyzujących polskie wybory parlamentarne w 2007r. i prezydenckie (...) w 2010r. oraz postać ich głównego „aktora” – Jarosława Kaczyńskiego, omówiono kilka mechanizmów odniesień intertekstowych. Punkt ciężkości stanowiły relacje dyskursywne zachodzące w warstwie przechodzenia między tekstami, stosowania wspólnych haseł dyskursywnych i budowania dynamizmu danego dyskursu. (shrink)

Looking at a number of memorials, memory sites and artworks relating to the Holocaust the book uses this idea of synaesthetic perception to explore trauma, memory and the production of art in relation to painful memories.

The paper analyzes a handful of works for children and youth that are based on mythology and deal with depression, a topic that is becoming more frequent in contemporary children’s and young adults’ culture, mainly because of the need to break the mental he­alth taboo. These are the newest edition of Laura Orvieto’s Storie di bambini molto antichi, Rachel Smythe’s digital comics Lore Olympus, Patricia Satjawatcha­raphong’s short animation Reflection, and the webcomic series Therapy created by Anastasia Gorshkova. They provide examples (...) from literary and audio-visual culture for very young re­aders and more adult teenagers and youth, raising the issue of deep sadness utilizing storytelling and not in a didactic way. Some of the protagonists struggling with the problem are far from lively chara­cters in conventional interpretations of the myths, so the texts play upon stereotypes entrenched in the culture. It appears that children’s works inspired by classical antiquity have significant interpretative potential and educational value – as well as the ability to surprise the audience. (shrink)

Is Edward Abramowski an ethicist of care? Part I. Introduction to the ethics of care and the ethics of friendship These two papers contribute to the research tendency that seeks an analogy between the ethics of care and other ethical theories. The purpose of this study is to compare the ethics of care with Edward Abramowski’s moral theory. The critical appraisal of both theories requires the reconstruction and confrontation of issues such as friendship-brotherhood-care, response to the needs of others, and (...) making friendship-brotherhood-care public. The analysis of philosophical sources was carried out with the use of tools from hermeneutics and the history of ideas. In the case of the ethics of care, both the theories of direct caring relations and of group, institutional caring relations were examined. The analysis of Abramowski’s philosophy is focused on the ethics of friendship. In Part I, the ethics of care and the ethics of friendship are presented. Part II refers the results obtained from the analysis of the ethics of friendship to the theses and arguments which feature in the ethics of care. Czy Edward Abramowski jest etykiem troski? Część I. Prezentacja etyki troski i etyki przyjaźni Seria dwóch artykułów wpisuje się w tendencję badawczą poszukującą analogii pomiędzy etyką troski a innymi teoriami etycznymi. Celem pracy jest porównanie etyki troski i teorii moralnej Edwarda Abramowskiego. Krytyczne badanie obu teorii polega na odtworzeniu i konfrontacji rozumienia takich zagadnień, jak: przyjaźń – braterstwo – troska, źródła reakcji na potrzeby innego, upublicznienie przyjaźni – braterstwa – troski. Do jego realizacji wykorzystano analizę tekstów filozoficznych przeprowadzoną z uwzględnieniem narzędzi hermeneutyki i historii idei. W przypadku etyki troski badaniu poddano zarówno teorie bezpośrednich relacji opiekuńczych, jak i teorie relacji pośrednich, międzygrupowych, zinstytucjonalizowanych. Przedmiotem analizy w filozofii Abramowskiego stała się etyka przyjaźni. W pierwszym artykule zaprezentowano etykę troski oraz etykę przyjaźni. W drugim odniesiono pozyskane wyniki analiz etyki przyjaźni do tez i argumentacji obecnych w etyce troski. (shrink)

The main focus of this article is little known in Poland political tolerance. The article aims to: reconstruct of Michael Walzer concept of the political tolerance; to place it in the typology of relativism – universalism; to make a first step towards the separation of political tolerance from personal tolerance for a general discussion of tolerance; demonstrate that tolerance is not only modern, liberal concept, associated with the individual freedom; show that the dispute about tolerance not only between the enemies (...) and the allies of tolerance, but also among the allies themselves. In an innovative way it defends that thesis that Poland is a tolerant state. (shrink)

Intrauterine insemination is one of many treatments provided to infertility patients. Many factors such as, but not limited to, quality of semen, the age of a woman, and reproductive hormone levels contribute to infertility. Therefore, the aim of our study is to establish a statistical probability concerning the prediction of which groups of patients have a very good or poor prognosis for pregnancy after IUI insemination. For that purpose, we compare the results of two analyses: Cluster Analysis and Kohonen Neural (...) Networks. The k-means algorithm from the clustering methods was the best to use for selecting patients with a good prognosis but the Kohonen Neural Networks was better for selecting groups of patients with the lowest chances for pregnancy. W części pierwszej przedstawiam wczesne hiszpańskie recepcje Kartezjusza, które miały miejsce na przełomie XVII i XVIII wieku i związane są z działalnością takich postaci jak: José Zaragoza, Vincente Tosca czy Bautista Corachán. W części drugiej prezentuje XIX- wieczne studia nad filozofią kartezjańską, które dotyczą recepcji Kartezjusza w hiszpańskim neokantyzmie i w Pokoleniu 1898. W części trzeciej natomiast ukazuję XX-wieczne recepcje filozofii francuskiego myśliciela, w obszarze (...) których szczególną rolę odegrały badania José Ortegi y Gasseta. (shrink)
