Recent years have been blessed with an abundance of logical systems, arising from a multitude of applications. A logic can be characterised in many different ways. Traditionally, a logic is presented via the following three components: 1. an intuitive non-formal motivation, perhaps tie it in to some application area 2. a semantical interpretation 3. a proof theoretical formulation. There are several types of proof theoretical methodologies, Hilbert style, Gentzen style, goal directed style, labelled deductive system style, and so on. The (...) tableau methodology, invented in the 1950s by Beth and Hintikka and later per fected by Smullyan and Fitting, is today one of the most popular, since it appears to bring together the proof-theoretical and the semantical approaches to the pre of a logical system and is also very intuitive. In many universities it is sentation the style first taught to students. Recently interest in tableaux has become more widespread and a community crystallised around the subject. An annual tableaux conference is being held and proceedings are published. The present volume is a Handbook a/Tableaux pre senting to the community a wide coverage of tableaux systems for a variety of logics. It is written by active members of the community and brings the reader up to frontline research. It will be of interest to any formal logician from any area. (shrink)

An essential prerequisite for the development of a theory of consciousness is the clarification of the fundamental mechanisms underlying conscious processes. In this article I present an approach that sheds new light on these mechanisms. This approach builds on stochastic electrodynamics (SED), a promising theoretical framework that provides a deeper understanding of quantum systems and reveals the origin of quantum phenomena. I outline the most important concepts and findings of SED and interpret the neurophysiological body of evidence in the context (...) of these findings, indicating that the functioning of the brain rests upon exactly the same principles that are characteristic for quantum systems. On this basis, I construct a new hypothesis on the mechanisms behind conscious processes and discuss the new perspectives this hypothesis opens up for consciousness research. In particular, it offers the possibility of elucidating the relationship between brain and consciousness, of specifying the connection between consciousness and information, and of answering the question of what distinguishes conscious processes from unconscious processes. One of the main challenges in consciousness research is widely known as the hard problem of consciousness. In order to tackle this problem, I utilize an approach from theoretical physics, called stochastic electrodynamics (SED), which goes one step beyond quantum theory and sheds new light on the reality behind matter. According to this approach, matter is a resonant oscillator that is orchestrated by an all-pervasive stochastic radiation field, called zero-point field (ZPF). The properties of matter are not intrinsic but acquired (...) by dynamic interaction with the ZPF, which in turn picks up information about the material system as soon as an ordered state, i.e., a stable attractor, is reached. I point out that these principles apply also to macroscopic biological systems. From this perspective, long-range correlations in the brain, such as neural gamma synchrony, can be interpreted in terms of order phenomena induced and stabilized by the ZPF, suggesting that every attractor in the brain goes along with an information state in the ZPF. In order to build the bridge to consciousness, I employ additional input from Eastern philosophy. From a comparison between SED and Eastern philosophy I draw the conclusion that the ZPF is an appropriate candidate for the substrate of consciousness, implying that information states in the ZPF are associated with conscious states. On this basis I develop a conceptual framework for consciousness that is fully consistent with physics, neurophysiology, and Eastern philosophy. I argue that this conceptual framework has many interesting features and opens a door to a theory of consciousness. Particularly, it solves the problem of how matter and consciousness communicate in a causally closed functional chain, it gives a physical grounding to existing approaches regarding the connection between consciousness and information, and it gives clear direction to future models and experiments. In den "Rhetorikforschungen", begründet von Gert Ueding (mit Joachim Dyck und Walter Jens), erscheinen hervorragende Leistungen rhetorischer Grundlagenforschung. Interdisziplinarität ist konstitutiv: Publiziert werden auch Studien jener wissenschaftlichen Fächer, die aus der Rhetorik hervorgegangen und methodisch mit ihr verflochten geblieben sind, sowie Arbeiten zur Praxis rhetorischen Sprechens in Alltag und Beruf, in öffentlichen Debatten, in Wirtschaft und Politik. Besonderes Gewicht liegt auf historischen Aspekten. Historisch meint hier: bis auf den heutigen Tag. Leitend bleibt die Frage, welche Rolle die Rhetorik in (...) den verschiedenen Disziplinen heute hat, welche Bedeutung sie in der modernen Gesellschaft für sich beansprucht. Die historische Perspektive erfasst dabei in Theorie und Praxis die Geschichte der Rhetorik und ihrer Rezeption von der Antike über das Mittelalter, den Humanismus, den Barock und die Aufklärung bis hin zu ihrer anschließenden Transformation und Verdrängung. Grammar can be formulated as a kind of substructural propositional logic. In support of this claim, we survey bare Gentzen style deductive systems and two kinds of non-commutative linear logic: intuitionistic and compact bilinear logic. We also glance at their categorical refinements.

This article describes the phenomenon of knowledge building in online environments. Knowledge building is a process within a community, which leads to the development of knowledge. In order to analyze this process, we will look into the ways in which individuals interact with the collective as a whole. For this purpose, the psychic and social systems, which are involved here are regarded as meaning-based systems in the sense of Luhmann’s systems theory—open to the environment, but operatively closed. The respective modes (...) of operation of psychic and social systems will be examined, and “structural coupling” between these systems described. Another characteristic of knowledge-building communities is self-organization, which is described here in the sense of autopoiesis. A pivotal task, which knowledge-building communities have to tackle, is to handle complexity and reach common understanding. These aspects will also be described using conceptualizations of Luhmann’s systems theory, illustrated by many examples. (shrink)

Der Kern der Logik, wie er sich in den Sätzen der Identität, des ausgeschlossenen Widerspruches und des ausgeschlossenen Dritten ausgedrückt findet, ist nicht revidierbar, auch nicht mit Hilfe von mehrwertigen Logiken. Überdies kommt der Logik, will man die uneingeschränkte Möglichkeit von Widersprüchen eliminieren, gegenüber der Dialektik der methodologische Primat zu. Der unaufhebbare Primat der Logik ist jedoch ein Primat und keine absolute Herrschaft, d.h. es ist möglich, die Grenze der Anwendbarkeit der Logik zu ermitteln. Diese Grenze ist dann erreicht, wenn (...) ein kontextvariantes Objekt nicht zu einem kontextinvarianten Objekt umgeformt werden kann. Das ist z. B. der Fall beim Ganzen im Sinne der Totalität. Dies Ergebnis hat Folgen für die Gültigkeit des Popperschen Falsifikationsprinzips: Läßt sich zeigen, daß die Widersprüche einer These nur von kontextvarianten Objekten, die sich nicht in kontextinvariante Objekte verwandeln lassen, herrühren, so ist die betreffende These aufgrund dieser Widersprüche allein noch nicht korrekturbedürftig, geschweige denn widerlegt. Starting from a political controversy and a wide-ranging media-discussion, the article examines the evolution of German national holidays from the "Kaiserreich" to the reunited Federal Republic. The author lists the dates and attributes of the national festivities and asks to what extent national days can contribute to a collective identification with the given state and its political system. In the process of change one identifies a long run from emotional festivity towards a rather rational attitude in celebrating the National Day. (...)
