Media violence and Christian ethics.Jolyon P. Mitchell - 2007 - New York: Cambridge University Press.
How can audiences interact creatively, wisely and peaceably with the many different forms of violence found throughout today's media? Suicide attacks, graphic executions and the horrors of war appear in news reports, films, web-sites, and even on mobile phones. One approach towards media violence is to attempt to protect viewers; another is to criticize journalists, editors, film-makers and their stories. In this book Jolyon Mitchell highlights Christianity's ambiguous relationship with media violence. He goes beyond debates about the effects of (...)

Hegel’s political theology: ‘True Infinity’, dialectical panentheism and social criticism.Jolyon Agar - 2015 - Philosophy and Social Criticism 41 (10):1093-1111.
This article proposes that the foundations of Hegel’s contribution to social criticism are compatible with, and enriched by, his meta-theology. His social critique is grounded in his belief that normative ideas – and especially the idea of freedom – are necessarily experiential and historical. Often regarded as a recipe for an authoritarian reconciliation with the status quo, Hegel’s philosophy has been dismissed by some unsympathetic commentators from the left as inimical to the task of social criticism. Much of the reason (...)

Religion and the New Atheism: A Critical Appraisal brings together scholars from a variety of disciplines (religious studies, sociology of religion, sociology of science, philosophy and theology) in order to critically engage with so-called ‘new atheism’. The study is a collection of essays that not so much gives primacy to discrediting the limited scholarship of new atheist (...)

The Origin of The Use of an and Ke In Indefinite Clauses.R. H. Howorth - 1955 - Classical Quarterly 5 (1-2):72-.
Several explanations have already been put forward to account for the origin of the use of and with the subjunctive in indefinite relative, temporal, and conditional clauses in Greek. Therefore, before I add one more to them, it is necessary for me to give the reasons which there are for thinking that the views already put forward are unsatisfactory, and that a new explanation is required.

Rhythmic Relating: Bidirectional Support for Social Timing in Autism Therapies.Stuart Daniel, Dawn Wimpory, Jonathan T. Delafield-Butt, Stephen Malloch, Ulla Holck, Monika Geretsegger, Suzi Tortora, Nigel Osborne, Benjaman Schögler, Sabine Koch, Judit Elias-Masiques, Marie-Claire Howorth, Penelope Dunbar, Karrie Swan, Magali J. Rochat, Robin Schlochtermeier, Katharine Forster & Pat Amos - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
We propose Rhythmic Relating for autism: a system of supports for friends, therapists, parents, and educators; a system which aims to augment bidirectional communication and complement existing therapeutic approaches. We begin by summarizing the developmental significance of social timing and the social-motor-synchrony challenges observed in early autism. Meta-analyses conclude the early primacy of such challenges, yet cite the lack of focused therapies. We identify core relational parameters in support of social-motor-synchrony and systematize these using the communicative musicality constructs: pulse; quality; (...)

Safeguarding the atom: the nuclear enthusiasm of Muriel Howorth.Paige Johnson - 2012 - British Journal for the History of Science 45 (4):551-571.
There was more than one response to the nuclear age. Countering well-documented attitudes of protest and pessimism, Muriel Howorth (1886–1971) models a less examined strain of atomic enthusiasm in British nuclear culture. Believing that the same power within the atomic bomb could be harnessed to make the world a ‘smiling garden of Eden’, she utilized traditionally feminine domains of kitchen and garden in her efforts to educate the public about the potential of the atom and to ‘safeguard’ it on (...)
