The Philosophy of Freedom describes Rudolf Steiner's path to freedom. It contains the nonconformist ideals of his youth that result from his study of mathematics, science, and philosophy culminating in a philosophy of life founded upon individualistic truth and ethical individualism. This is the first English translation and the only one sanctioned by Rudolf Steiner himself. Joint translators Prof. and Mrs. R. F. Alfred Hoernlé were selected for their outstanding qualifications. First published in 1916, it is based on (...) the original 1894 German "Die Philosophie der Freiheit". Other translations have been based on the 1918 revised German edition and renamed "The Philosophy Of Spiritual Activity" and "Intuitive Thinking As A Spiritual Path". This original edition includes inspiring passages about individualism that were removed from the book in 1918 and are missing in later translations: "We no longer believe that there is a norm to which we must all strive to conform." Un des effets de la radicalisation de la modernité tient à la montée de l’incertitude qui déstabilise les institutions les plus solides de notre culture, dont notamment la science, et à la généralisation de la sémantique du risque qui affecte les processus de prise de décision. Parmi les centres de recherche en sciences sociales spécialisés sur les risques en Europe, deux grands établissements ont retenu plus particulièrement notre attention en raison de leur polarité. Nous établirons des comparaisons entre deux projets (...) menés par Wolfgang Van den Daele, Wissenschaftszentrum , Berlin, et Robin Grove-White et Brian Wynne, Centre for the Study of Environmental Change , Lancaster. L’expérience menée par le WZB autour de l’évaluation des risques associés à la diffusion des organismes génétiquement modifiés dans l’agriculture et l’alimentation a conduit l’équipe à défendre une procédure strictement technique favorable à la normalisation des biotechnologies. Pour les chercheurs du CSEC, au contraire, l’élargissement des évaluations des innovations technologiques à des considérations éthiques, économiques, politiques et sociales s’impose. Le différend atteste de l’immersion des sciences et de leurs controverses dans des visions du monde et des Weltanschauungen : il compromet l’éventualité d’une entente entre les protagonistes du conflit.One of the consequences of advanced modernity is the intensification of uncertainty, which destabilizes the main institutions of our world. The production of knowledge and the legitimacy of decisions are mainly affected by this transformation, as the semantics of risk shows. We spent several stays at different research institutions in France, Germany and the United Kingdom to study the variations in the social sciences framing of risk issues. We will focus our attention on two teams of researchers, because of the exemplariness of their positions structuring the field. We follow a comparison between two projects led by Wolfgang Van den Daele at the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin , and Robin Grove-White and Brian Wynne at the Centre for the Study of Environmental Change in Lancaster . Their conclusions based on an experiment to evaluate the risks associated with the introduction of GMOs in agriculture and food, differ radically. The WZB argues for a strict delimitation and restriction of risk assessment, while the CSEC argues for the integration of ethical and sociopolitical considerations in the discussions about the diffusion of technical innovations in society. The strength of both arguments illustrates the articulation of science and its controversies with Weltanschauungen and sociophilosophical background, which contribute to the stabilization of each position and thus reduces the chances for a resolution of controversy. Das Wissen, nach dem die Menschen streben, ist oft nur jenes Mindestmaß, dessen sie bedürfen, um ihr Leben zu fristen. Aber nicht alle Menschen begnügen sich damit. Es gab und es gibt einige, die auch in einem stärkeren und höheren Sinn neugierig sind. Sie empfinden das Bedürfnis, über eine einmal erreichte Stufe ihrer Kenntnisse und Einsichten hinauszukommen. Daher denken sie über Mittel und Methoden nach, die sie bis dahin verwendet haben, und sie trachten danach, jene zu verbessern. Auch verschaffen sie (...) sich Klarheit darüber, was ihnen bis jetzt Erfolg brachte, und sie erkennen, daß es am besten ist, in der bewährten Weise fortzufahren. Es wird ihnen aber auch klar, was sie dar an gehindert hatte, noch erfolgreicher zu sein. Daß sie immer bewußter und immer kritischer werden, ist daher unvermeid lich. Manches, was früher als "Wissen" galt, wird jetzt verworfen. Aber nicht immer be bewahrt und ausgebaut und was aufgegeben werden muß; steht Einigkeit darüber, was denn was Erfolg und was Mißerfolg ist, wird nicht von sämtlichen Beobachtern in gleicher Weise beurteilt. Oft gilt dem einen als Wissen, was der andere für ein Hirngespinst hält; häufig ist gerade das, was der eine am höchsten schätzt und als "absolute" oder "ewige" Wahrheit verehrt, dem anderen fragwürdig oder lächerlich. Damit beschreibe ich nicht nur vergangene, sondern auch gegenwärtige Zu stände. Wir alle wissen, daß gerade in unserer Zeit die krassesten Gegensätze herrschen. (shrink)

Insbesondere von LEIBNIZ her der Prägung der Grundbegriffe nach gehend, in denen sich die neuzeitliche "Metaphysik der Subjektivität" begründet hat, geriet.der Verfasser in Verlegenheit, als er das Ver hältnis des Begriffs des "Subjekts" (subjectum) zu dem der "Substanz" (substantia) zu fassen suchte. Nicht nur bedeutet, wie bekannt, das Wort subjectum im "Mittelalter" etwas anderes als das Wort "Subjekt" in der "Neuzeit", sondern auch jenes Verhältnis, erwies sich, ist zumal in der theologischen Ontologie der Hochscholastik, aber auch noch in der Begrifflichkeit (...) der ersten "Systeme" der neuzeitlichen Metaphysik, ein anderes, als es der heutigen, seit KANTs Zeiten sich verbreitenden Meinung geläufig ist.! Für THOMAS VON AQUINO stehen zusammen: 2 pati, recipere, subjectum esse. Es war unumgänglich, auf ARISTOTELES zurückzugehen, der jenen Begriff des U7t"OXe:LfLe:VOV, von dem sich der des subjectum und so auch der des Subjekts herleitet, zuerst geprägt hat. Hier wiederum konnte es nicht ausbleiben, daß seine den "Begriff und die Ontologie des Subjekts" betreffenden Studien den Verfasser in andere Fragen verwickelten, die eine selbständige Untersuchung erforderten.
