  1. The Truths We Tell Ourselves: Foucault on Parrhesia.Zacharia Simpson - 2012 - Foucault Studies 13:99-115.
Michel Foucault’s later concept of parrhesia presents a number of potential interpretive problems with respect to his work as a whole and his conception of truth. This article presents an alternative reading of parrhesia , which develops its concept through Foucault’s earlier pronouncements on truth and fiction. Seen this way, parrhesia becomes a means whereby one enacts useful fictions within the context of one’s life. As a practice, which demands self-mastery, orientation towards truth, and a command of one’s life, parrhesia (...)

Leah’s ‘soft’ eyes: Unveiling envy and the evil eye in Genesis 29:17.Zacharias Kotzé - 2024 - HTS Theological Studies 80 (1):5.
The seemingly innocuous description of Leah as having ‘soft’ eyes in Genesis 29:17 has captivated scholars and readers for centuries. This article advances an ironic interpretation, suggesting that Leah’s ‘soft’ eyes were not a sign of weakness but, rather, an indication of envy and malevolence, potentially contributing to fertility issues faced by her sister Rachel in terms of the ancient Near Eastern evil eye belief complex. In this context, the article delves into ancient belief systems that entwined beauty, fertility, and (...)

The Paradox of Partnership: Assessing New Forms of NGO Advocacy on Labor Rights.Shareen Hertel - 2010 - Ethics and International Affairs 24 (2):171-189.
Labor rights public-private partnerships are an important and growing phenomenon in corporate governance, even while they are sometimes used instrumentally by business for reputational reasons, and may ultimately fail to transform fundamentally the system they seek to redress.

    Zur Entstehung des Einteilchen-Schalenmodells.Peter Zacharias - 1972 - Annals of Science 28 (4):401-411.
Bereits (...)

    A post-Jungian reading of the Book of Baruch.Zacharias Kotzé - 2022 - HTS Theological Studies 78 (2).
It is often claimed that the use of depth psychology in the interpretation of ancient texts is irrelevant and methodologically unsound. Several typical Jungian archetypes, such as the shadow, the primordial mother, and the hero, were identified, interpreted and commented on from a post-Jungian perspective. The apocryphal Book of Baruch has typically been studied as a prime example of penitential prayer in the late Second Temple Period. In this study, the book was approached from the perspective of post-Jungian literary criticism. (...)

Is formalism the key to resolving the generalizability crisis? An experimental economics perspective.Zacharias Maniadis - 2022 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 45.
I draw lessons from experimental economics. I argue that the lack of mathematical formalism cannot be usefully thought as the cause of the underappreciation of contextual and generalizability considerations. Instead, this lack is problematic because it hinders a clear relationship between theory and quantitative predictions. I also advocate a pragmatic policy-focused approach as a partial remedy to the generalizability problem.

In most U.S. jurisdictions, clinicians providing informal “curbside” consults are protected from medical malpractice liability due to the absence of a doctor-patient relationship. A recent Minnesota Supreme Court case, Warren v. Dinter, offers the opportunity to reassess whether the majority rule is truly serving the best interests of patients.

The Legal Dimensions of Genomic Sequencing in Newborn Screening.Rachel L. Zacharias, Monica E. Smith & Jaime S. King - 2018 - Hastings Center Report 48 (S2):39-41.
The possible integration of genomic sequencing (including whole‐genome and whole‐exome sequencing) into the three contexts addressed in this special report—state‐mandated screening programs, clinical care, and direct‐to‐consumer services—raises related but distinct legal issues. This essay will outline the legal issues surrounding the integration of genomic sequencing into state newborn screening programs, parental rights to refuse and access sequencing for their newborns in clinical and direct‐to‐consumer care, and privacy‐related legal issues attending the use of sequencing in newborns.

The suppressive power of positive thinking: Aiding suppression-induced forgetting in repressive coping.Paula Hertel & Leda McDaniel - 2010 - Cognition and Emotion 24 (7):1239-1249.
Participants scoring high and low on a measure of repressive coping style (Mendolia, 2002) first learned a series of related word pairs (cue–target). Half of the cues were homographs. In the subsequent think/no-think phase (Anderson & Green, 2001), they responded with targets on some trials and suppressed thoughts of targets on others. Suppressed targets were always emotionally negative, as were targets associated with baseline cues reserved for the final test. Some participants were provided with emotionally benign or positive substitutes to (...)

    The Future of Reproductive Autonomy.Josephine Johnston & Rachel L. Zacharias - 2017 - Hastings Center Report 47 (s3):S6-S11.
In a project The Hastings Center is now running on the future of prenatal testing, we are encountering clear examples, both in established law and in the practices of individual providers, of failures to respect women's reproductive autonomy: when testing is not offered to certain demographics of women, for instance, or when the choices of women to terminate or continue pregnancies are prohibited or otherwise not supported. But this project also raises puzzles for reproductive autonomy. We have learned that some (...)

    Skepticism in the Genomic Era.Rachel L. Zacharias - 2016 - Hastings Center Report 46 (6):inside front cover-inside front.
I joined The Hastings Center this past summer, after graduating from Duke University, where I researched advancements in neuroscience and genomics and their import for law, ethics, and policy. This research required, to an extent, faith in the idea that researchers can identify pathways by which genes combine with epigenetic and environmental factors to affect neuronal activity and influence behaviors. Throughout my first months here, I have puzzled over broad critiques of “genomic hype” in recent literature, which clash with the (...)

Profiles of Parents’ Beliefs About Their Child’s Intelligence and Self-Regulation: A Latent Profile Analysis.Maren Stern & Silke Hertel - 2020 - Frontiers in Psychology 11.
This study examined parents’ implicit theories of intelligence and self-regulation from a person-centered perspective using latent profile analysis. First, we explored whether different belief profiles exist. Second, we examined if the emergent belief profiles differ by demographic variables and are related to parents’ failure beliefs, goal orientation, and co-regulatory strategies. Data were collected from N = 137 parents of preschoolers who answered an online survey comprising their implicit theories about the malleability and relevance of the domains intelligence and self-regulation. We (...)

A Sound and Complete Proof Theory for Propositional Logical Contingencies.Charles Morgan, Alexander Hertel & Philipp Hertel - 2007 - Notre Dame Journal of Formal Logic 48 (4):521-530.
There are simple, purely syntactic axiomatic proof systems for both the logical truths and the logical falsehoods of propositional logic. However, to date no such system has been developed for the logical contingencies, that is, formulas that are both satisfiable and falsifiable. This paper formalizes the purely syntactic axiomatic proof systems for the logical contingencies and proves its soundness as well as completeness.

Dysphoric and nondysphoric college students described self-generated images of themselves interacting with the referents of neutral nouns; the nouns were paired with adjectives that changed their emotional meaning (e.g.,cruise ship, cargo ship, sinking ship). On the subsequent unexpected test, the nouns from emotional pairings were more frequently recalled than were those from neutral pairings, regardless of their valence or congruence with the students' mood. An examination of the initial descriptions revealed that emotional images were more distinctive, but not in a (...)
