Our examination of the controversy surrounding the intentionalist conception of textual interpretation shows that the critics of this approach to questions of meaning and interpretation have so far failed to prove their case. The standard objections to intentionalism, on grounds of logical or empirical fallacy, cannot be maintained. We reconstruct the objections which have been raised in the literature against the intentional conception and discuss them as criticism of a conception hold to be inadequate with respect to the problem of (...) literary interpretation. In our evaluation of the intentional conception we conclude that it represents a perfectly ‘normal’ conception of meaning and interpretation, of a kind by no means inferior to other approaches adopted by the various disciplines concerned with interpreting texts. Die Analyse der Versuche zur "Verwissenschaftlichung der Literaturwissenschaft" stellt einige repräsentative "präskriptive" und "deskriptive" Ansätze vor und will einen Diskussionsrahmen skizzieren, in dem die Vorteile beider Ansätze bewahrt, ihre Defizite vermieden werden können.

In the 16th century philological competence and theological dynamics led to a new appreciation of the Bible as the foundation of the Christian Church. As a result the question of hermeneutics became an important chapter of theological controversy. The studies presented in this volume analyse the argumentative form of the early modern Philologia Sacra and how it was influenced by apologetic impulses in the formation and rendition of ecclesiastical doctrine. Die Kategorie des Werks wurde in den Literaturwissenschaften in den letzten 50 Jahren massiv kritisiert. Im Laufe der letzten Jahre lässt sich allerdings beobachten, dass der einstmals verpönte Werkbegriff schrittweise wieder zu einer zentralen und produktiven Analysekategorie avanciert ist. Der vorliegende Band untersucht, welche Formen und Funktionen der Werkbegriff in den Geisteswissenschaften des 21. Jahrhunderts annehmen kann.

Die Beiträger dieses Bandes wollen angesichts der Vielfalt der theoretischen Konzepte für die gemeinsamen Problemfelder der Interpretation und der Literaturgeschichtsschreibung Begründungsverfahren für eine künftige Ausdifferenzierung des Fachs darstellen.

Im ersten Teil unseres Aufsatzes charakterisieren wir den Beitrag der ‘modernen’ Wissenschaftstheorie zur Methodologie des Textverstehens; im zweiten Teil diskutieren wir exemplarisch zwei Konzeptionen der ‘neueren’ Hermeneutik. Ziel dieser kritischen Untersuchungen ist eine Förderung des Dialogs zwischen Wissenschaftstheorie, Hermeneutik und Literaturwissenschaft.

Wir rekonstruieren einen signifikanten Strang von Max Benses früher intellektueller Entwicklung über sein Verhältnis zu Oswald Spengler, David Hilbert und Heinrich Scholz. Nach einer kurzen Rekapitulation von Spenglers kulturrelativistischem Bild des Mathematischen folgen wir einigen Spuren der Spengler-Lektüre in Max Benses frühen Texten und zeigen, wie sich Bense unter dem Einfluss von Heinrich Scholz ab Ende der 1930er Jahre sukzessive von Spengler distanziert und schließlich ein Konzept ‚reiner Wissenschaft‘ ausbildet, wie es sich unter anderem in David Hilberts formalistischer Mathematik Ausdruck (...) verleiht. Die Verteidigung Hilberts gegen völkische Denker wie Max Steck ist einer der Schauplätze, auf denen Scholz und Bense gemeinsam ihren Weltanschauungsdissens zur NS-Wissenschaftsauffassung artikulieren, gleichwohl sind auch sie Teil des NS-Wissenschaftssystems. Die Denkfigur des ordo inversus, die seit der Antike in den verschiedensten Disziplinen epistemische Sicherheit garantierte, verliert in der Zeit um 1800 an Plausibilität. Es kommt zu einem Formen- und Funktionswandel, der in den Künsten wie auch in den Natur-und Geisteswissenschaften auf vielfältige Weise resonierte. Der ordo inversus bezeichnet eine zirkuläre Bewegung, die von einem Anfangs- zu einem Endpunkt fortschreitet und im Zurückkehren wieder mit dem Ausgangspunkt verbunden wird, häufig in Teilbewegungen aufgespalten, etwa progressio/regressio oder analysis/synthesis. Als Methodenkonzept spielt er (...) von der Antike über das Mittelalter und die Frühe Neuzeit bis weit ins 18. Jahrhundert hinein eine zentrale Rolle in Theologie, Logik, Naturphilosophie und Hermeneutik. Das Zerbrechen des ordo inversus provoziert eine Reihe von Restitutionsversuchen von so unterschiedlichen Autoren wie Goethe, Novalis und Jean Paul, aber auch bei Lambert, Kant, Fichte und Schleiermacher. Der Band beleuchtet diese Prozesse in komparativer und historischer Perspektive und eröffnet so einen instruktiven Einblick in die historische Epistemologie im Übergang zur "Moderne". (shrink)

This essay examines relativist and fideist challenges to Alasdair MacIntyre’s theory of rationality by reading some of MacIntyre’s more recent works in thecontext of his earlier work in the philosophy of religion, Marxism, and the philosophy of the social sciences.

In recent years, the full text of papers are increasingly available electronically which opens up the possibility of quantitatively investigating citation contexts in more detail. In this study, we introduce a new form of citation analysis, which we call citation concept analysis (CCA). CCA is intended to reveal the cognitive impact certain concepts—published in a highly-cited landmark publication—have on the citing authors. It counts the number of times the concepts are mentioned (cited) in the citation context of citing publications. We (...) demonstrate the method using three classical highly cited books: (1) The structure of scientific revolutions by Thomas S. Kuhn, (2) The logic of scientific discovery—Logik der Forschung: Zur Erkenntnistheorie der modernen Naturwissenschaft in German—, and (3) Conjectures and refutations: the growth of scientific knowledge by Karl R. Popper. It is not surprising—as our results show—that Kuhn’s “paradigm” concept seems to have had a significant impact. What is surprising is that our results indicate a much larger impact of the concept “paradigm” than Kuhn’s other concepts, e.g., “scientific revolution”. The paradigm concept accounts for about 40% of the concept-related citations to Kuhn’s work, and its impact is resilient across all disciplines and over time. With respect to Popper, “falsification” is the most used concept derived from his books. Falsification is the cornerstone of Popper’s critical rationalism. (shrink)

The particular situation of the French administrative detention center medical units appears to be an exemplary case to study the difficulties facing medical practice. Indeed, the starting point of our inquiry was an amazing observation that needed to be addressed and understood: why are professional interpreters so seldom requested in ADC medical units, where one would expect that they would be “naturally” present? Aiming to fully explore the meanings of the “absent interpreter”, this article takes into account the possible meanings (...) of this situation: the recourse to professional interpreters in France is far from expected given cumulative evidence of its benefits; perceptions of illegal immigrants and medical habitus itself may both hamper the use of a third party; the ADCs are a very stressful place for healthcare professionals, with conflicting missions, political issues enmeshed with medical goals, and heavy affective burden that may lead to self-protection. Silencing voices of suffering others might be seen as the hidden indecent truth of the “absent interpreter”. These reflections open a window to a larger issue with regard to the full range of medicine: what are the place, the role and the function of patient’s words and narratives in contemporary medicine? The highly invested somatic perspective and its political corollary giving primacy to bare life harbor potential risks of obscuring speeches and undervaluing narratives. (shrink)
