This impeccable publication, the second of a four-volume History of Philosophy under the editorship of M Gilson, impressively inaugurates a series which should liberally endow undergraduate studies and the educated English-speaking public. More succinct and in some respects more decisive than Fr Copleston’s two-volume treatment, more developed than Hirschberger’s genial outline, more systematically philosophical than Dom Knowles’ biographico-historical survey, Dr Maurer’s exposition can stand comparison with Gilson’s own specialist History of Christian Philosophy in the Middle Ages to which he modestly (...) claims to offer an introduction, ‘and beyond all histories to the works of the medieval philosophers themselves’. He concentrates a masterful attention upon the key Christian thinkers from Augustine to Suarez, presenting a rich sweep of some twelve centuries from the patristic thought of the fourth century through the Scholastic era to the late Renaissance scholastics of the sixteenth century. This mature survey, emphasising sympathetic presentation rather than critical evaluation of each philosopher, is fitted succinctly and lucidly into less than 400 pages, reinforced by some 40 pages of select notes and followed by a scholarly bibliography and systematic index. The text is limpedly written, based squarely upon the original sources in the light of the best contemporary scholarship with a bias towards the well-known Gilson thesis, and pleasantly illuminated by the personal research judgment of the author. A condensed history of philosophy from the Pre-Socratics through to the 1960s, now extended to include the latest developments of Analytical philosopy. This new complemented edition follows the division of the original text into four parts: Ancient Philosophy, Medieval Philosophy, Modern Philosophy (17th and 18th century), and 19th and 20th century Philosophy. It contains a new preface and introduction, and a new fifth part on Analytical Philosophy by the Cambridge-based philosopher Clare Hay, carrying the story into the 21st century.

Ausgehend von Kleinmans Differenzierung des Krankheitsbegriffs in disease, illness und sickness und der Unterscheidung von Krankheit und Behinderung durch die Weltgesundheitsorganisation wird am Beispiel von Aufmerksamkeitsstörungen untersucht, welche Zusammenhänge zwischen den beiden Konzeptionen, Krankheit und Behinderung, bestehen. Hierbei wird gefragt, ob und wie Kleinmans Differenzierung des Krankheitsbegriffs auf den Behinderungsbegriff übertragen werden kann und wie eine Modifizierung produktiv für das Verständnis konkreter Syndrome genutzt werden kann. Während die WHO seit 1980 Behinderung von Krankheit auch per Klassifikation unterscheidet, ist der Bereich (...) chronischer Erkrankungen und psychischer sowie kognitiver Syndrome nicht eindeutig verortet. Dies zeigt sich u. a. daran, dass Intelligenzminderungen und Aufmerksamkeitsstörungen (als spezielle Form hyperkinetischer Störungen) sowohl medizinisch mit der ICD-10 (als Krankheitsklassifikation) diagnostiziert als auch mit der Behinderungsklassifikation der WHO, der Internationalen Klassifikation von Funktionsfähigkeit, Behinderung und Gesundheit (ICF), klassifiziert werden können. Im Gegensatz zur ICD lassen sich die Syndrome mit der ICF differenziert kategorisieren, dadurch dass einzelne Körperfunktionen oder Aktivitäten sowie die individuelle Umwelt beurteilt werden. Aufmerksamkeitsschwierigkeiten sowie verschiedene kognitive Fähigkeiten können interdisziplinär beurteilt werden, indem sowohl ihre physischen und psychischen als auch ihre individuellen und gesellschaftlichen Komponenten berücksichtigt werden. Die fachliche und die persönliche Perspektive auf die Syndrome sollten miteinander korreliert werden. Eine klare konzeptionelle Unterscheidung von Krankheit und Behinderung ist nicht möglich. This chapter explores the debate between contemporary projectivists or expressivists, and the advocates of sensibility theory. Both positions are best viewed as forms of sentimentalism — the theory that evaluative concepts must be explicated by appeal to the sentiments. It argues that the sophisticated interpretation of such notions as “true” and “objective” that are offered by defenders of these competing views ultimately undermines the significance of their meta-ethical disputes over “cognitivism” and “realism” about value. An entirely different mechanism and localization were recently proposed for the COPII coat complex, challenging its well‐accepted function to select and concentrate cargo into small COPII‐coated spherical transport vesicles. Instead, the COPII complex is suggested to form a dynamic yet stationary collar that forms a boundary between the ER and the ER export membrane domain. This membrane domain, the ER exit site (ERES), is the site of COPII‐mediated sorting and concentration of transport competent proteins. Subsequently, the ERES is implicated to (...) mature and bud to form a sizeable pleiomorphic transport carrier that translocate on microtubules to fuse with the Golgi apparatus. Despite this drastic mechanistic dogma shift, most of the underlying protein‐protein and protein‐membrane interactions remain unchanged. Here, we attempt to provide a detailed description of the newly proposed model of how ER to Golgi transport works by describing the role of several essential proteins of the transport machinery. We perceive smells as perduring complex entities within a distal array that might be conceived of as smellscapes. However, the philosophical orthodoxy of Odor Theories has been to deny that smells are perceived as having a distal location. Recent challenges have been mounted to Odor Theories’ veracity in handling the timescale of olfactory perception, how it individuates odors as a distal entities, and their claim that olfactory perception is not spatial. The paper does not aim to dispute these criticisms. Rather, (...) what will be shown is that Molecular Structure Theory, a refinement of Odor Theory, can be further developed to handle these challenges. The theory is further refined by focusing on distal perception that requires considering the perceptual object as mereologically complex persisting odor against a background scene conceived of as a smellscape. What will be offered is an expansion of Molecular Structure Theory to account for distal smell perception within natural environments. (shrink)

Existential threat lies at the heart of intergroup conflict, but the literature on existential concerns lacks clear conceptualization and integration. To address this problem, we offer a new conceptualization and measurement of existential threat. We establish the reliability and validity of our measure, and to illustrate its utility, we examine whether different existential threats underlie the association between political ideology and support for specific political policies. Study 1 (N = 798) established the construct validity of the scale, and revealed four (...) distinct existential threats: personal death, physical collective annihilation, symbolic collective annihilation, and past victimization. Study 2 (N = 424) confirmed the 4-factor structure, and the convergent and discriminant validity of the scale. Study 3 (N = 170) revealed that the association between a hawkish political ideology and support for hardline policies was mediated by past victimization, whereas the association between a dovish political ideology and conciliatory policies was mediated by concerns over collective symbolic annihilation. Study 4 (N = 503) conceptually replicated the pattern of findings found in Study 3, and showed that at times of conflict, physical collective annihilation concerns also mediate the relationship between hawkish ideologies and support for hardline policies. In both Studies 3 and 4, when controlling for other threats, personal death did not play a significant role. These results underscore the need to consider the multidimensional nature of existential threat, especially in the context of political conflict. (shrink)
